This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all - What are the symptoms of worn struts and/or bump stops described above? I'm a novice DIY'er - oil changes, brake pads and rotors are the limit of my bravery. A couple of weeks ago, my 996 started... creaking. Mostly at slower speeds 35 mph and below, and the creaking is much more pronounced when I turn right versus when I turn left. When I was in high school, my 1984 Chrysler LeBaron had a deteriorated CV boot and joint. The tone of the sound is similar but it's not really the same so I don't think it's that. Anyway - trying to avoid a multi-thousand $$ trip to my local indy.... wondering if that sounds like struts/shocks to y'all and whether this is something doable for my level of DIY. Thanks in advance

POST 2Original post

Creaking most probably not caused by worn struts nor bump stops. Instead it' could be caused by top mounts or anti-roll bar bushes. Basically anywhere where relative movement between rubber and another, hard material may occur is a potential source.

POST 3Original post

Failed struts are easy to diagnose; push down on the fender and if it porpoises up/down, the strut is blown. Worn struts can be harder to pin down. My personal experience with the 996 is that it feels 'floaty' over the road, not well connected. Creaks could be from any number of things in the suspension. My thought would be that if the car has worn out struts, it probably needs other suspension stuff too. Definitely do the strut tops etc. when you replace them, and give the rest of the bits a good looking over.

POST 5Original post

Dirt can get into the rubber bushings and make that noise. Even in metal-to-metal contact will get noisy when dirt or salt gets in there. However, these cars are getting up in age and everything rubber and plastic starts to degenerate. Start with a good inspection underneath. Look for oil splashes around the struts and check the condition of everything rubber.
