What is everyone doing for replacement/extra complete keys (chip and key parts) for their 996 ? And what is the availability of those things in the current market?
I have no knowledge of availability during these times.
Order key from a parts supplier i.e.: Pelican Parts, Auto Atlanta, etc...much cheaper than dealer. Do NOT buy online because you may not get all you need. Keys come with a code number that you need to have it programmed by a dealer. As far as key blade I ordered from "keys in the post"(or something like that). It's the deal where you send pics of both sides of your key to them by email and they cut a new blade and mail it to you. I was suspicious of how that wouldn't work, but it did...perfectly.
Thanks for the info. Without the key in hand (car at the shop) to look at it, am I to understand that the key comes in two pieces? I'll assume that the top part, the one with the lock and unlock buttons (and I guess the immobilizer chip) is in the top part and the actual "key" portion somehow snaps into that? Did these cars come with a valet key?
The "valet" key has the metal blade and an RFID chip, so it will open the door and start the car. I have one. There is no valet parking mode, the car runs the same. It's just so you don't have to give your main keys to a valet.
When I bought my 2000 C2 it only came with one key and one valet key.
I had TRE program and cut me a new key, cost $375.
Dealer Cost ~$450
Took only a couple of hours, they need to have a locksmith cut the key blade.
Three parts to the key:
-Sidewinder blade to turn lock cylinders in doors and ignition
-Battery powered chip in fob
-passive RF �rice� chip in fob
Keys in the Post sent me a new blade from just a photo $36 shipped
its programming the immobilizer to accept the RF chip is what you need to have a dealer or Indy w special tools. I think I�m about $440 all-in for new key.
The " Valet" key also has a shorter laser cut on the sides, so that it will not unlock the console/glove box...Only starts the car and locks/unlocks the doors..
I just went through this process two weeks ago. I ordered the fob and the key blank from Suncoast. Had a local locksmith cut the key then took the whole thing to the local dealer to program it. Fob was $159, key blank was $30 plus $35 to cut it and dealer charged me $90 to program it. The dealer even washed the car for me. The same dealer quoted me over $500 if I had purchased the key from them so I felt like the $325 or so that I paid was a decent deal. I can�t tell you how nice it is to have a key fob that works every time. My existing one was very random and frustrating.
