Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Early on in the 996 production, there were new crate engines available that I believe were used for replacements of the failed IMS units.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

All, I am looking for the listing that someone had posted telling the vin number with the corresponding engine serial number? Anyone have a link?

POST 2Original post

Hey sparks I'm not sure if I am understanding your post correctly, but knowing VIN and Engine casing # will not necessarily tell you definitively any information about your IMS or IMS bearing. This is per your post title "IMS info". A visual inspection of the flange is really the only 100% way to get information on your IMS bearing unless you are the original owner of the car and are aware of all service history.

POST 3Original post

I don't think even Porsche kept a record of VIN and engine numbers. And most certainly if the engine was replaced (AT) there is no record.

POST 4Original post

Does (AT) denote a Porsche remanufactured engine specifically or was it applied to engines that were brand new too (not remanufactured)? Early on in the 996 production, there were new crate engines available that I believe were used for replacements of the failed IMS units. Was always curious about this.

I don't think Porsche ever remanufactured engines. They replaced them outright with a replacement engine that had AT in the engine number. They (Porsche) did replacement engines as a result of the class action lawsuit relative to the IMSB, and it was limited to a specific range of engines. This whole topic is quite a can of worms. IMHO

POST 6Original post

I'm curious what he's looking for because he posted about going to a 997.1 and was worried about the IMS in that also. Then realized mentioning the potential of bore scoring was something to be concerned with as well.

I assume you're looking to avoid the '05 997 (and possibly the '06) cars with the small single IMS 6204 bearing by looking up the cars in question by serial number? Groov is the one that posts that report a lot.
