Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have an old Kenwood DDX814 in my car now. Garmin appears to no longer support map updates for this model, so I am thinking a new radio with GPS NAV is a good idea. I am much more interested in NAV since I can't hear the radio over the engine. Besides, the engine sounds better anyway. What recommendation might you guys have? I want to be able to keep the maps current as possible since roads around here keep changing. So updating is important. Thanks!

POST 3Original post

Doesn’t have all the bells and whistles plus it’s 2x the price of aftermarket

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17824340

So, which aftermarket would you suggest?

POST 5Original post

PCCM+. Couldn't be happier with it. Super easy to install. Are there cheaper units out in the aftermarket with more bells and whistles? Sure. But there are also cheaper and faster cars out there than a 996 Porsche. One man's meat is another man's poison.🤷‍♂️

POST 6Original post

My feelings is if your already going off the script just go all out the radio I want is sold out and the pandemic has killed shipping the kenwood has back up camera and satellite connections but there are many to chose from go to crutchfeild web site the have all the info you need

POST 7Original post

@Marv , either go with the Porsche PCCM+ or like NYPOW said, replace everything with what you want. I would caution you that if you plan on selling this some day, keep it as close to stock as you can.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17825436

I understand that what I am doing is a bit sacrilegious, but I have no plans on selling the car. I bought it intending it to be the last Porsche I would own and so far, 140K miles later, I still feel exactly the same about it as the day I bought it off the dealer's lot. While I still have the original radio, I put a Kenwood double-DIN radio/NAV unit in because we drive the snot out of the car. I'd keep the Kenwood except I can't update the maps. Garmin stopped supporting it in 2011 and roads have changed too much.

POST 9Original post

I think the PCCM is really cool looking. The integration into a 20 year old car is admirable. I won't spend the money on this tech tho. When I ordered by Wrangler, it was the first car I ordered with NAV. Completely useless option when compared to using my phone for Waze. The PCCM apple play or android integration is great.....for today. In a few years, with new phones, I'm sure that the PCCM will become obsolete and be as useful as my CDR-23. I showed my wife the PCCM and how cool that a car maker is making new things for really old cars. She thought I would run out and get it since I am a tech and audio junkie. In the 996, I need a radio for tunes and have my phone for everything else....

Did you retain all the MOST based factory wiring in the car when you installed the Kenwood? If that's the case, I would recommend installing the Porsche PCCM+. For post 2002 cars with MOST, these units have been pretty much plug and play. It's the older analog cars that have the problems with the PCCM+. This is because Porsche didn't design the unit to have line level (i.e. pre-amp) output like the CDR-220 units. Not that I'm some purist, but the PCCM+ does give the car a factory design that is similar to the original PCM units that were available in day. Cheers!

POST 11Original post

Im In a similar boat and leaning towards a Sony XAVAX 1000 double DIN with apple play. Its $300, and it has a **** for volume control, which is critical to me. not at all interest in spending the money on the PCCM unit. Speakers, I dont know yet. Havent been to a car stereo shop yet to confirm whether I need six 4 speakers to fit the six locations in my 99 996. Will consider putting two bass speakers in the rear panels to give more low end, and an amp to mount where the useless CD changer is now, in the frunk.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17825524

I don't have MOST. I had the basic CDR-23 as the stock radio before the Kenwood install.

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 17825673

The CDR-23 was one of the first MOST based Becker radios offered by Porsche, but it did offer speaker level output for cars without a frunk amplifier. This was the base configuration. Is that how your system is configured? Basically, without a factory Harman or BOSE amplifier in the frunk? Here's the deal, the PCCM+ does offer speaker level output thereby making it a somewhat plug and play for the base systems. As mentioned before, the people with analog systems that are having problems are the ones with analog frunk amplifiers. This is because of the line level output from the Yellow Plug does not output an audio feed like the older CDR-220 or previous models with frunk amps. They end up having to purchase HI/LO converters which have been proven to produce unwanted hum.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17825688

This is a GT3 and there is nothing in the frunk except the battery and a small toolset (wrench, screwdriver, and a can of Porsche's version of Fix-A-Flat).

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 17825710

That's still good news if you wanted to move to the PCCM+ since it does offer basic Speaker-level output via Socket B. There are several good threads on the subject here on Rennlist.

POST 16Original post

My car came to me with an Atoto A6, Atoto back up camera (wired), factory amp present but bypassed, no subwoofer. The previous owner bypassed the factory amp & dash speakers and wired 4 speakers (doors & rears only) right off the Atoto. The Atoto is pretty speedy and I'm going to keep it, for now. This weekend I'm swapping out the interior and have removed pretty much everything except the doors & dash and am ready to run wires. New door cards (from GT3) won't have speakers. I think I want an amp and a sub. The car will have a half cage an no rear seats. Hoping to run wires today. What should I do? I know nothing about car stereos. Thanks!!

POST 17Original post

How do you like the Atoto? Does yours have built in GPS and is it Carplay compatible?

POST 18Original post

It's the Atoto A6 (not sure if A6 pro or not), but I like it. It doesn't come w Carplay out-of-the box but they sell an adapter for a reasonable amount of money. No volume **** but again, an adapter is available. There is a port for the GPS antenna but I always use Waze on my phone mount and the A6 for my ECU monitor & music. Someone on a different forum said the Atoto A8 was way better than the A6 so, if you're starting from scratch, take a look at that one. The A6 boots up immediately when it should, the rear view camera view comes on immediately, when it should. There is zero lag and tons of features that I haven't explored. Difficult to see how it could be better, at least for my needs.
