Last Thursday I go to take my '99 baby (105k miles) to the body shop to have the tail pipes adjusted (one needs to be extended out a little to match with the new rear bumper diffuser).

He was right, one coil went bad, he replaced it and all 6 spark plugs and she runs like new.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

Generation: 20261026T113718Z · outcome-qualification-6. Deterministic extraction; no AI model inference. How we use sources

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well, there you have it. I read too much on these forums, lol. Last Thursday I go to take my '99 baby (105k miles) to the body shop to have the tail pipes adjusted (one needs to be extended out a little to match with the new rear bumper diffuser). The car has been sitting for a couple of weeks due to massive rainfall in the PNW. I started it up and it was running really rough, almost loping like a 60's muscle car. I didn't think too much of it and figured it would clear itself out (duh) so I started out of our cul de sac, made it 50 ' out to the main street and the CEL is flashing. Whoa!!!! Panic Will Robinson, shut off immediately or the engine is gonna blow, but I figured what the heck, I'd rather it blow in my driveway so I pulled an immediate u-turn back to my driveway. As I was part way into the u-turn the CEL went solid, "whew". Back to the driveway, park and shutdown sequence initiated and call to my Indy made (yes, he is on my speed dial - home and office). He says, let it sit for a few hours or wait till tomorrow and start back up and see if light is still on and solid and if so, drive it 1.75 miles to his shop. He figured a coil went bad and said don't panic (yet). He was right, one coil went bad, he replaced it and all 6 spark plugs and she runs like new. Disaster averted!!!!!!! So, FYI to the newer guys that are not mechanically inclined like me, when a coil goes bad, it can throw a flashy CEL for a moment and the world of 996 ownership doesn't end

POST 2Original post

Flashing CEL means you could damage emissions equipment. When a coil dies, that cylinder is just dumping raw fuel through the cat
