Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suggestion
Seemed like that would have adjusted the exhaust volume to 'just about right'.
Leading evidence: 'Adjust exhaust volume' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust exhaust volume' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The same material Borla uses for a Chevy camaro costs ~$500.

Suggestion
They know they can make more money selling mufflers using the same technology/materials to a higher end crowd for more money.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I took my mufflers off today. It's loud but I like the sound. Gonna leave em off for a week or so to really judge how I feel about it. I don't really care for the volume of it when I'm getting on it but for just normal driving and cruising I really like the deep sound of it...
Want to know what's even worse... I actually wondered what a set of Flowmaster 40's would sound like tucked in there. Yeah...redneck with a Porsche.
There are few things I find more amusing on the road than when a guy (often, but not always, in a Honda) with an ear-numbingly-loud fart can nails the throttle, announcing to everyone within a 10-car radius that he has unleashed his mighty car's full fury, and then...
s l o w l y
...his car starts to pull away.
It's even better going uphill, since it may often be several seconds before the noisy car in question noticeably begins accelerating. A few times I have actually found myself looking around to find the loud guy before loud guy's car actually starts creeping away from the pack.
Cars with open headers and/or raspy fart cans are like high-school guys talking about sex - there's a lot of noise, but not much action.
It's pure sex when you're passing by tall buildings or through a tunnel...It sounds exotic imo.....I get a lot of compliments and people asking details about my car...the performance is better too, I've smoked alot of cars at the track that I didn't think I could take...It also gets a whole lot quieter after like 6 months...I told a friend my car was loud and when he hoped in he said, "this is loud?"
I got tired of it... put the hack job fake fister's back on. Wish I could just flip a switch and turn them off and on but I don't feel like spending the coin for the kits or doing the work for that matter.
You will soon find how much a few extra feet of exhaust pipe can turn "catastrophically loud" into "tolerably loud."
I think there are only 2 or 3 sets of muffler bypass pipes for the 996 in existence worldwide - they get resold about every 2 weeks as one owner gives up, makes his car bearable again, and sells them to the next guy.
Your high school experience apparently wasn't anything like mine... It was twice a day every day from Junior year til college. Before games, after games... etc...
That would have been 7th grade up until the summer before junior year. Looks like you missed out on a few years of naughty time. Sad thing is kids now days are starting even younger.
I think what that guy did was buy the cans and had a muffler shop modify it to mount on the 996. If your OEM mufflers are shot I guess the brackets can be cut off and be used to modify the flowmaster. That would be cheapest alternative to going aftermarket .
No it wouldn't most likely. Borla has muffler set for 997 and it costs $1700. The same material Borla uses for a Chevy camaro costs ~$500. They know they can make more money selling mufflers using the same technology/materials to a higher end crowd for more money. Look at Borla mufflers for the c6 vette crowd too.
I suspect flowmaster would do the same thing and hike up their prices to the higher end market.
Now if you wanted to diy some universal mufflers, that's another story.
when I first got the 996, I did the Fister hack and headers. Not too loud but loud enough. Before I did the 'hack' I drove for a little bit without mufflers. It got too loud. Also worried about burning exhaust valves. At the time thought about putting only one of the two mufflers on. Seemed like that would have adjusted the exhaust volume to 'just about right'.
