Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Replace after it' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check fluid level' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

(No, I have not made any IMS bearing upgrades, and after my last oil change I did check for metal specks in the oil filter)

Disconnecting negative side of battery for awhile fixed that but it returns after a couple weeks.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've tried searching but can't find a thread on my very strange issue.
2002 C2 Cab, about 44k miles. (No, I have not made any IMS bearing upgrades, and after my last oil change I did check for metal specks in the oil filter)
Here's my problem:
When in automatic/Tip mode, I notice a 'thump' (almost like a quieter version of a car backfiring) when I brake and the Tip downshifts from 3rd to 2nd gear. This happens 90% of the time when I'm slowing down, whether it's city driving and slowing down to a red light, or coming off a highway off-ramp. The noise appears to come from the rear of the car.
The strange thing is, when I
manually
downshift from 3rd to 2nd, there is no 'thump' or any other strange sound. It downshifts perfectly fine when I do it manually, but when it's in auto mode, about 90% of the time it'll make that strange noise.
Has anyone experienced this issue before? It's strange that the problem occurs only when auto downshift, but does not occur when I manually downshift. That leads me to think it's not necessarily only a mechanical issue (otherwise why does it only happen when in Auto mode), but I honestly have no idea. I haven't taken it into the shop yet, but was hoping to hear some ideas here. Thanks!
No, I haven't. You mean the transmission fluid level right? It looks like I'll have to go to a shop to get that checked out.
I've never noticed any fluids leaking from the car though. I thought the fluid change interval was about 90k miles, but I guess the car is 13 years old... Thanks for the tip.
Mine is doing similar thing. It only happens during hard braking as it tries to slow you down using engine braking. Feels like somebody shifted from 3rd to second and dump the clutch in a manual.
I serviced the fluid and nothing changed on mine. Disconnecting negative side of battery for awhile fixed that but it returns after a couple weeks.
It feels like transmission programming issue.
I'm afraid mine doesn't do it at all. The only time I've had any thump on a Tip was when the front transmission mounting was shot on my C4S. After it was replaced, no thump on that either.
I have a 2002 C2 tip. I have never felt a thump from 3rd down to 2nd. The only time I feel a shift change is when the transmission is cold. I second the idea of inspecting the transmission mount.
My Tip was shifting rough, slamming into 2nd & 3rd gear at slow speeds, making scraping/rattling noise when coming to a stop in 2nd gear. My local Indy was able to reset the TCM, I just picked it up earlier today and he told me to put it in manual 1st gear, stomp the gas, the transmission will shift to 2nd at red line then try to hit close to red line for each shift. The transmission is quiet and shifting really well. He told me if it happens again and they can't reset it, it would set me back about $2k for a new TCM.
