Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

You can source used Miata engines for hundreds - used M96's in the right displacement for whatever year 996 you decide on can cost a lot - in the $10K range.
Leading evidence: 'Use m96's in the right displacement' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'better driver' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Use m96's in the right displacement' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suspected cause
I suspect a better driver with 20 fewer HP will win nearly every race against a less skilled driver with 20 more HP.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi, 1st thread so i'll try and be short and un-troll like as possible.
1st off, whats the deal with these IMSB? No, No, JK
Is this a good place for racer specific q's? That area of this forum looks kinda dead.
A partner and I are looking to up our wannabe racer game. We were first hot on each of us getting a 924s/944 and spec them out, we each had one in the 90's. Then briefly we thought about Boxsters or even Miatas but we decided we are to old to appreciate guys flirting with us anymore
(not that theres anything wrong with that)
Thats brings us to the 996. From what Ive gathered one can be "spec'ed" for ~$10-12K above purchase price, is that a reasonable estimate? (We can do a lot of the wrenching)
A little clarification/confirmation on the e-gas throttle please. Year '99 only? Its better to not have or having never driven either what does it matter in hard driving?
Value and worth being so subjective, how would you quantify the extra 20HP in the 2002+ years, at ~4-6K$ higher?
Now for my curious crazy side, Who drives a tiptronic real real hard and regularly, comments? Im intrigued by the idea of adding the flappy paddles.
How about a Cab racer? Boxsters do it. I have read the spec rules and they only list coupes but WTF, maybe a different class? My initial thought is to toss the soft top and all its components ala speedster, a real cage, and not the roll bars they sell for cabs and where required put the hard top on, how crazy or feasible is that?
Thanks in advance, and plenty more where this came from. im already suffering from paralysis by analysis.
Your budget is about right. BUT, some tracked 996's, like some non-tracked 996's, may have a slightly higher than normal tendency to eat engines. You can source used Miata engines for hundreds - used M96's in the right displacement for whatever year 996 you decide on can cost a lot - in the $10K range. In no way is this an attempt to dissuade you - just giving you information. Lots of the track cars I've seen for sale as a package (where someone is giving up the habit) may include an extra motor or two, something a budget 996 racer definitely wouldn't be able to afford. Same issue with the Boxster
Consider the motorsport AOS. Otherwise, you risk having your AOS get overwhelmed.
Make sure your configuration includes oiling upgrades - deep-sump with baffles at least, ideally add an accusump as well.
E-gas - it doesn't bother me on my '99. The 99 C4 was equipped with e-gas; the '99 Carrera 2 has a traditional cable. Everything for 2000 and onward is e-gas.
Re: coupe vs. cab - I don't see the reason to NOT use a coupe. In addition to the safety aspect (which is tremendous - several members have posted photos of their rolled 996's, and in a couple of cases, it seems evident that the outcome would have been much, much worse if the car had been a cab instead of a coupe. In addition to keeping stuff out of your skull, the coupe is going to be stiffer than a cab.
As far as the extra 20 HP, it really depends on what you're going to drive. On an autocross or a tight road course, the 20HP isn't really going to matter. On a course with really long straights where you are spending a lot of time near redline in the higher gears, that 20HP can pay dividends. I suspect a better driver with 20 fewer HP will win nearly every race against a less skilled driver with 20 more HP.
This is to be with the goal of moving beyond auto-X, we do that and 2 HPDE in our classics. We know plans and goals come and go, we should be loading up for TWS this weekend, but life....
Plan is to decide and purchase in the 1st qtr next year. Sort it, light duty and work on our licenses and be GTG the next.
A most troubling problem Im finding seems to be the lack of white or green ones made. Im thinking they didnt make green ones to **** on the British?
