If you spend your entire available funds on the purchase and don't have at least 5k set aside for maintenance you are setting yourself up to be disappointed .

The more �research� I do the more scared I get about these cars. Specifically the 02 Cab C4. Feedback ranges from do recommend maintenance and it�s a joy to own and drive to the other extreme of the 02 engines being the worst ones.
if budget was no object I would buy a much newer car. But for the low 20k range this seems like a lot of car.
PPI will be done and hopefully that will ease some of my concerns. Irrational or not!
My opinion on buying ANY used car or truck . If you spend your entire available funds on the purchase and don't have at least 5k set aside for maintenance you are setting yourself up to be disappointed . In this example you are looking at a 20+ year old high end vehicle .
They can be expensive to maintain , especially if you have to pay someone else . On the flip side when you have a " good one " they are so rewarding to own and drive . Find the best one you can and get a PPI from a known Porsche indy shop .

So every time you buy a used car of any make, you are buying a long line of either knuckleheaded owners or quality owners. You want to buy from a line of quality owners.
All you have to do is the following:
1. Get copies of the service records to see what was done and when. No service records means no service (run away), a few service records means few service (run away), alot of service records means alot of service (possible PPI candidate).
2. Get an in depth PPI including:
Test the oil to see what's in it.
Drop the sump to see what's in it.
Scope the bores from the sump to see condition.
Cut open the oil filter to see what's in it.
Plenty of good ones out there that have been well taken care of. But there is a bell curve with everything in life, so keep looking and know when to say no. You will find it amd will sleep at night.
I agree with a couple of the earlier posters who basically said to be sure you can afford to drive a Porsche before you buy one. I always try to buy from people who have owned several Porsches over the years as they tend to be better caretakers than the guy who bought one, couldn�t afford to maintain it, and let it decline.
