For reference is my radiator after not being cleaned for about a year.

While my oil coolers were being replaced, I took the time, 1 hour, to go to Home Depot and buy some wire mesh and black spray paint and install the screens behind my plastic fins.

Even Porsche switched to this design on their newer GT cars vs what was used previously.

I used the wire mesh that plaster contractors use, the Diamond mesh.

My car was very clean and the Radiators looked the same, so after much reading on maintenance and having owned the car for a few months i decided to take off the front bumper to fix the beetle horn, and do screens at the same time, between the condensers and radiators was really bad, it had to be affecting cooling, so after a good cleaning on each side, i installed grills, my options were limited as i have an Aero front bumper, it was a little challenging but i got it done and refitted, i don't appear to notice any higher temp in normal use so far, my suspicion is that there may be some reduction in flow at the extremes i believe there are some who sight data from track usage, i'm sure the d
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

While my oil coolers were being replaced, I took the time, 1 hour, to go to Home Depot and buy some wire mesh and black spray paint and install the screens behind my plastic fins. Attached with black Zip Ties. So glad I did! Without them Id be stuck on the back road to Vegas with an over heated engine.
I feel like this is a myth at this point that I have proven to be just that, at least in my case. I've had my screens in place for over 2 years now and I drive my car hard. No negative impact on the temperatures at all. Even on a humid 100F day. There was a pretty drastic impact, however, in how much cleaner my radiators were. Were they completely free of any kind of debris? No. Having said that, there was barely anything there and only a few small leaves that got through along with some small bugs. I think dirty and clogged up radiators have a far greater negative effect on the cooling than any grilles. And during certain times of the year they can get pretty clogged up after just a few drives. Let's be honest, nobody is pulling their bumper several times a year to clean them properly. And it's not just leaves and etc. It's the bugs that get jammed in the fins that end up expanding and causing bigger problems. In near future I plan to upgrade my grilles to ones with an octagonal shape, which has showed better airflow. Even Porsche switched to this design on their newer GT cars vs what was used previously. For reference is my radiator after not being cleaned for about a year.
Thanks for sharing the photo. I also find that my temp has stayed the same. Just above 180.
Now I just need to figure out how to take the bumper off myself! Need to go back to
You Tube University!lol
It's not hard. Just a bunch of screws on the bottom, few around inner wheel well and 2 behind each turn signal. Only 2 from the top I believe, once you remove the black plastic cover. I'm sure Pelican parts has a good guide with photos.
Im of this opinion as well. While I dont live in the hottest place in the US Miami is damned hot pretty much year round and Ive yet to see my car get hot with the mesh in. Even in stop and go Miami traffic.
The important thing is its not just ANY screen works,
there are min opening sizes to get enough air flow, this isn't new..
Various racing and other venues have been trying to solve this same issue since they have raced cars.
The dirt track world uses honeycomb radiator shields that can be easily removed and rinsed off..

You can cut them with a carpet knife, they are made from epoxy impregnated cardboard material.
You just put them against the radiator/ac condenser so you cant reallyy see them in many cars.
Flip side is you throw them away every so often.
There are similar aluminum products that look similar to the screen used in a MAF , just haven't hit mainstream for auto use..

To me its worth it so not to worry about a rock or something busting a radiator and leaving me stranded.
Amazing how often this gets brought up...
Here's what I have on my car. DIY, and what I purchased on Amazon. I did this almost 2 years ago. I recently had to replace my horns and when I had the bumper off I did a good cleaning, it wasn't as bad as without them. So the grates gave me another year at least. Oh, and I can remove/replace them without taking the bumper off, very easy.
My screens are home made from Home Depot. I used the wire mesh that plaster contractors use, the Diamond mesh. Its flexible, but does have sharp edges, so wear gloves. 2 coats of high quality rattle can black and installed with black zip ties. You have to look really hard to see them. Total cost- $15
No matter how small screen you use, eventually you need to pull the bumper,
Mine had nothing larger than a BB between the AC condenser and the radiator.
I added Rennline screens when I added the center radiator. Deep sump, LN low temp thermostat, and UAOS. I've been pretty happy with it.
