POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

https://youtu.be/pSHupZjNfnU Last one he bought was a coupe with like 200k that he LS swapped and blew the LS.

POST 2Original post

Quotes source post: 16556760

Watched this earlier today as I follow him and find his content entertaining and interesting. Looks like his new purchase for $6k looks promisingly healthy. I will say I wish I had his money.

POST 3Original post

Quotes source post: 16556781

Im with you, this will be a fun one to watch but Im biased.

POST 4Original post

Quotes source post: 16556760

His first 996 had 248k miles. He killed the M96 on the track. He LS swapped the dead M96, and then he killed the LS on the track. That particular LS (an LS1, if I recall correctly) can have oil starvation issues on the track. He sold it to another YouTuber. Recently, he had a 996 Turbo. He had one if the metal coolant lines disconnect from the housing on the track. A known issue. Fortunately didn't kill the engine. He seemed to really like the turbo.

POST 5Original post

Quotes source post: 16556953

I was surprised to hear in this latest video that he had recently sold the turbo as I remembered in one of his segments he expressed how much he loved the car. Hope to see good things with this new find.

POST 6Original post

I will check this out. My main gripe with Hoovie is the fact that he doesn’t work on his own cars. I think his channel would be a lot cooler if he did. The guy that works on his cars has the personality of a toaster

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 16557008

Agreed. His segments are short so not a lot of time to invest so I dont mind. Maybe he will get this latest find scheduled for a F6I rebuild at some point while owning it...wishful thinking huh?

POST 8Original post

Watched it as well, and look forward to seeing what issues pop up in his car.

POST 9Original post

Him saying he bought a 996 Conv with a manual for 6 k is going to hurt others and he Never found out some important things like Mechanical condition of engine, and anything else It may need another 10 k easy. Guy is a hump, but I like my veteran friend the wizard.

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 16557043

No way Jake would take him on as a customer. Way too much drama and risk. I've never watched this guy's videos but knowing that these guys make their money off click bait videos and manufactured drama there would be absolutely zero upside for anyone who has a successful product and large customer base to participate in any form.

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 16557216

I couldn't agree more with your above.

POST 12Original post

Quotes source posts: 16557201, 16557216

Hurt how so? Hurt the value of these cars? Doubtful, the same way Magnus buying one hasn't caused them to become any more desirable. This is his whole formula, the mechanical condition is semi irrelevant as long as it runs and drives. There is no financial incentive for either party here. Having a car sent out and waiting a year makes Hoovie no money and if Jake is already booked out a year there is no incentive because he's already booked. People get so salty about Hoovie when he pops up. It is really stranger when there are legitimately toxic, predatory channels out there.

POST 13Original post

Hoovie is a tool - plain and simple. To me there is nothing either real or entertaining about what he does. It's all contrived bs (like much of today's "media/content"). Clearly he's succesful at what he's doing, so I'll give him that - I just refuse to watch his mindless drivel.

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 16557556

If you're a fan that's great. We all have different tastes. My point is simply from a business POV. Why would Jake (or anyone with a respected name) sell this guy an engine or other product knowing his history of deliberately blowing **** up for the clicks? Can't you see it now? The title would read..."My new $25,000 FSI engine blew up and the vendor won't stand behind it! Why a 996 is the worst car in the world! And, like moths to flame, some on here would click the link

POST 15Original post

Simple solution. Have him sign a NDA that no portion of the car or the work performed can ever be discussed in you tube nor any other internet platform. If he does, the lawsuits will begin. I learned that from our president! Of course, I don’t think Hoovie would ever agree to it.

POST 16Original post

Just watched it. I get the impression he is a big fan of the, 996, lol! I like watching him. He tends to do videos of cars I like. And since he bought that Mustang Shelby tribute, I'm a fan! So yes, I support his channel - roast me if you must. He's 15 min of entertainment once a week. Just one of many that I like to watch.

POST 17Original post

Hoovie is entertaining. I don't think he's ever claimed to work on his own cars. The wizard idea was funny. He seems to be more informed and delivers it in a comical way and that has proven to be successful. This is like the comic section of automotive YouTube channels.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 16558188

Because he doesn't and that is the one thing I genuinely like about him is that he doesn't claim to be mechanically inclined or making smart financial choices. Often times acknowledging his failures in the past which IMO is a trait we don't often see in people these days. I have no problem that people don't like him, obviously, I do so I am biased its just funny to see how much emotions a YouTuber can conjure up. Then people start throwing around made-up scenarios to try and further their view.

POST 19Original post

Some folks are mechanically inclined. Im not one of them. I tend to break anything I attempt to fix. I find Hoovie entertaining. He is the 1st to admit he doesnt turn a wrench. Like him or not hes made a few bucks from his YT channel. And I agree with the above; I dont see JR taking him as a customer. Just not in his wheelhouse and FSI doesnt need the publicity, and with a year + wait list what would be the point anyways?

POST 20Original post

Hoovie likes clicks, likes money, and is an embarrassment to car people everywhere. He does not like cars other than they provide a way to give him click revenue.

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 16558170

Yep. I also like to watch his friend WatchJRGo who actually does his own work And Harry's Garage is pretty good for exotic/odd ball euro cars.

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 16559253

Disagree. Hes into cars. Just doesnt know how to work on them. But thats part of his YT schtick. How much of a mess he can get himself into. He definitely like cars though.

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 16557216

You got that right! He wouldn't pay the required money, I am sure... I don't give discounts, either.

POST 24Original post

Quotes source post: 16559260

Haven't seen JRgo. I do like Harry's garage. I like Doug Demuro, Jay Leno's Garage and B is for Build to name a few others.

POST 25 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 16559598

January 1, 2018 I made a new years resolution to avoid Doug Demuro anything. I've done well so far. I just think he's a clown and his opinion isn't worth anything. YMMV

POST 26Original post

Quotes source post: 16559681

i watched him once. I forget what car he was reviewing but it was an older car and he was bashing features and design elements as if the car was a new car. He had no concept of car history and how some features (like vent windows, back seat ash trays, etc) were important at the time. i maintain if you truly know anything about cars you should be be able to judge them at the point in history they were made. Could you imagine him reviewing a Model T for his millennial audience? It was a car that literally changed the US (and possibly even the world) and he would be squealing about the lack of cup holders. Jay Lenos garage and Barn Find Hunter are is pretty much the only channels I look at with any regularity. They about the only ones who haven't devolved into click baiting titles and hyped up screeching

POST 28Original post

It's all about money and how many subscribers your YouTube channel can generate for you. All these guys provide some sort of entertainment for varying tastes and some are more informative than others. The good news is that we can choose which ones to watch or ignore. As it relates to buying a 996 for $6k, maybe he got lucky and it will be ok, but as the old saying goes, "If it seems to good to be true..."

POST 29Original post

Also disagree. If you have watched some of his videos and history, you can tell he got really into cars as a little kid. He appears to have had some help from pops along the way which doesn't hurt, and he's continued to build on his passion over the years. I say good for him that he's been able to monetize his passion via his YT channel.

POST 30Original post

This guy is a typical "modern car guy" that built a "following". He knows about what he can read on Google, and forums. These are normally the type that use cars as decorations for their garage, and changing their own oil is worthy of chest beating. I'm not much for "followers". More leading, and less following is what our country used to be known for. There's not a lot of old school, "built instead of bought" car guys these days. When I cross paths with another one, I appreciate it.

POST 31Original post

Quotes source post: 16559681

lol. Again all for entertainment. But he also goes over cars I like. He did the Porsche 959 which was a good review. Loved the Vector W8 review. Tavarish is another one I like, but he's done nothinglately

POST 32Original post

hi it’s Schmee LoL he is pretty good with hyper cars, and seems like a down to earth guy, been YouTubing longer than all of them. Like 8 years.

POST 33Original post

Shmee has quite a collection. I prefer him over Salomondrin any day.

POST 34Original post

You guys are wrong. Anyone that likes car does not drive them into the ground like he does. Hes a clown looking for clown clicks. You dont drive cars that you know are about to suffer catastrophic failure until they blow, laugh about, and then claim youre a car guy. This guy monetized being the class clown. Good for him, but he is no legit car guy. Heck most youtubers, influencers and TV show car guys are not. A real car guys show would be really informative and a bit boring.

POST 35Original post

Tough crowd. I dont mind hoovies garage or cartrek, yes some (or most) of it is a little corny they seem to still be car guys- I do like the wizard mechanic segments the most though. As an aside the rapide he recently bought was pretty cool. That said tavarish seems more entertaining as he works on all his cars.

POST 36Original post

Quotes source post: 16559840

I also have only seen one of his videos. I didn't hate it but on the other hand, it didn't motivate me to make an effort to watch any others. The video I saw was on a '80s e28 chassis BMW and I hear what you're saying about his 'take' on older cars. He was saying that BMW needs to make a back-to-basics car like the e28 for under $30k because there would be a huge demand for them today. He misses the point that the e28 was not 'basic' by '80s standards and it sold for ~$36,000 back then which is $86,000 in today's dollars. You Tube

POST 37Original post

Quotes source post: 16561672

Yup! Sadly, those channels don't get subscribers or as many views. People want to see train wrecks to be entertained. we now live in a world where faked videos and pics online attract the most money, so we'll see more and more of it. Mediocrity is rewarded more than trailblazers. one of my favorite engine builders is doing amazing work yet he has less than 2000 Subs. Such a shame. He's building a 300 WHP 3.0L NA engine. https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCM57Mh46yS7eKFhAiutZCQA

exactly. We live in a time where mindless entertainment rules. For those who have seen the movie " Idiocracy" you know we can't be far off from a movie like "***" or television shows like, "Ow! My *****!" most of the youtube tube videos I have seen seem to follow along these lines.

I'll add it to the watch list. His Appolo 911 adventure was a fun one to follow.

Here's another of my favorites to watch - kavs911 - guy rebuilds his 1969 911T.

POST 43Original post

Quotes source post: 16562300

I have to think all day when I'm at work. When at home I enjoy watching mindless dumb things at times. I don't mind Hoovie and know that he's making a living doing what he does so there's going to be some exaggerating taking place. I actually watched this episode on the TV the other night as my wife wanted no part of another stupid movie I watched (Jay and Silent Bob Reboot) and it came up on YouTube as a suggested video. I then went on a Ferrari and yacht tangent as YouTube kept suggesting things to me, but in any case, mindless entertainment is ok if you understand it's mindless entertainment.

POST 44Original post

I'm only laughing because anybody that watches Hoovie videos knows he's always the first person to call out what a clueless goof he is - and that's why I like his personality. The person that works on his cars is Mr. Wizzard, and Hoovie has never, ever tried to hide that fact. Full credit always goes to Wiz.

POST 45Original post

Hmm like him or not it is still nice to see a MK1 with high miles still running and driving, I have the same year and model and hope i get that kind of life out of it it will take me 22 years of driving to get up to 175k

This thread brings up a good point. What car channels do you follow? I like to watch: Harry’s Garage Engineering Explained Donut Media Old Car Memories (for nostalgia) Motor Week (old reviews for nostalgia again) Hoovie Doug.

POST 51Original post

Damn, are we all just clones of each other. I like to think I'm unique And the movie Idiocracy was meant to be a comedy but is actually a movie predicting the future. It's funny when you see movies that are set in the future that try to predict what the future would look like - think sci fi - they are always wrong, but a screw ball comedy seems to be on track.

I like Samcrac, he is like Hoovie in the sense he doesn't claim to be an expert or a bodywork professional. I've definitely seen questionable repairs but it is good entertainment, no different than Hoovie. I got a kick out of him trying to get that Rover going.

Mighty Car Mods is a channel.I recommend. Two guys who get along great, and have some (mad) skills. Currently doing a contest where each of them has $10k to buy a rear engine car and get them running right. One guy gets an MR2 and the other gets something sort of german.

POST 60Original post

I think it's entertaining (kind of what you want to watch when you need a break). Not every car enthusiast is capable of working on their own car and there are even those that are capable that do not have the time to do so. His channel isn't his main source of income and is unnecessary for his current and future success. As for the rest mentioned here, it's exactly the same with the exception of some of them are capable of working on their own cars (and some have behind the scenes help that is cleverly left out). I find the salvaged rebuild ones to be more hilarious (because the level and quality of the work is subpar on most and possible dangerous on the road). The recipe is simple and similar. "Hello I'm a car guy just like you, an average Joe really. My income is also average. I am going to do something stupid and buy an expensive/rare/quirky car cheap and attempt to do things in/to it while I repair it and sell it at a loss."

POST 61Original post

The Car Wizard is a good one to watch. He fixes most of Hoovie's cars. I also follow Watch JR Go. He usually buys real POS cars and fixis them for a quick flip but also does interesting build like a LS swapped Nitrous Rolls Royce. Mustie1 is also another good one I follow. He usually works on small engines, riding lawnmowers and such that he usually picks up from the side of the road or at garage sales but also sometimes works on VW bugs and buses. Wrench Everyday is good too and so is Finnegan's Garage.

POST 62Original post

Quotes source post: 16568514

I'm in line with most of the folks on this forum, as far as YouTube content. I watch Mustie1 videos too. I started when I was searching for 356 engine rebuild videos. Mustie1 has some beetle videos including firing up old engines that haven't run in years. He does all sorts of stuff that's been abandoned or he picked up cheap. i finally got my 356 engine off the garage floor and onto a stand last weekend. Time to tear into it.

POST 63Original post

I like Car Wizard just because he is a real dude and it's fun to watch him grow as a presenter and a videographer. There's a wholesomeness to his channel that a lot of others have lost with their polish.

POST 64Original post

Just happened to catch the update on this car after he took it to the dealer and then The Wizard. Certainly reinforces why I stopped going to the dealer and switched to an Indy. It does appear like overall he got a pretty good car on the cheap.

POST 65Original post

Hoovie expected a bit much from his inspection, considering it was a 1 hour job.

POST 66Original post

Nice to see other Mustie1 fans here. Really enjoy his channel. No one mentioned ratarossa who I like but he is dangerous making me think ferrari ownership can be economical.. Hoovie knows a lot of cars. It slips out every now and then like this 996 cab follow up. Feeling blown motor mounts and diagnosing the clunking front end. He just says he is mechanically inept in his channel so viewers can relate.

Or did he.. Im not a huge fan of Hoovie (I prefer some other youtubers) but was extremely proud he finally called out the shoddy and unnecessarily overpriced Porsche dealership service experience with these cars. I sincerely hope Porsche corporate was watching but doubt they were or care. As most of us I have been with an indy mechanic on my Porsche since almost day one because they simply care if you return. Carfection is the best automotive channel on YouTube right now for me. Anything that used to be at that level on YT doesn't really exist in the same capacity anymore (Chris Harris on Cars, Evo, Motor Trend). Don't mind me I just creeped in here looking for news on the new PCCM+ head unit.

I watched both of his new 996 videos. Not sure why he went on extended rant about the local dealership but maybe he had a score to settle. Looks like he did well though on the manual 996 cab for $6k. Hope he follows up with more about it.

POST 85Original post

Quotes source post: 16578760

I think it's an important point especially as more dealerships get gobbled up by larger entities. You want to think if you take your car to the dealership you will get a level of care that is above and beyond an independent mechanic. You would certainly expect it when paying the premium for such a thing. The sad truth that we've all experienced is that this is often not the case and like any business some will be better than others. I have seen it first hand when I went to a Land Rover dealership to inquire on major servicing costs and the new guy couldn't even answer basic questions on pricing or what was needed when. Their pink AutoNation plate frames were a funny gimmick but the people were clearly out of their depth with basic questions. Their services were also unnecessarily tiered where the higher end services included more of what I could only assume was scam detergent products. I suppose I am not the customer they are courting anyway, but it's disheartening to see a service department get notably worse and also more dishonest and expensive.

POST 86Original post

I only watched the video because it was about a 996. He clearly could do an entire video just about today's dealership experience. I was expecting more about the car (which came in the follow up video) and less about the changing quality of car dealerships in america.

1000%, Hoovie is a sweet entertaining dude. The only person he throws under the bus is himself. He has no ego and knows he makes terrible decisions. His videos are fun and funny. POST 90Original post

The salt and gatekeeping in this thread is really unbecoming and says a lot more about some of the posters here than it does about the target of their criticism. Hoovie is harmless, as is Demuro and Nick Murray. There's content out there that's far more insidious to hate on; start with any of the young influencers with hypercar channels, for instance.

POST 91Original post

Quotes source post: 16717561

100%, Paul brothers, Ricegum, Keemstar...people who genuinely try to exploit young kids. There is a lot of toxic culture out there on YT but the automotive stuff is fairly good. I get a kick out of all of the salt, especially coming from a crowd that has constantly had to hear over the years how 'awful' the 996 is.

POST 92Original post

Quotes source post: 16717582

Indeed. The 996 finally gets some general interest and has reached a very affordable price point, but these aren't "true" fans. I really loved the "... but kids today!" posts early in this thread. Apparently it's not possible enjoy a vehicle unless you can rebuild the engine. Fun is a zero-sum game for some, apparently. Most hobbies have a small slice of people who can't see past their own fingertips when it comes to expanding the interested audience. It always seem to be more of a concentrated problem with autos, though. I'm loving my 996. I hope others smile like I do when they drive theirs. I've found a very positive community here, which makes some of the responses here stand out for their pettiness.

POST 93Original post

Political correctness has no place when it comes to machines. Embracing people that cant tell the box end from the open end of a combination wrench, doesnt make you a car guy or them. Hoovie is in it for click revenue. Thinking that its anything more than that is disingenuous at best. Instead of acknowledging that truth calling others salty, mean, or curmudgeons also doesnt negate the fact. Hoovie has as much automotive value as Krusty the Clown. The funny thing is car forums embrace the Hoovies and usually chase off the people with grease under their fingernails with this automotive PCness. I remember a world when we judged people for their contributions instead of their feelings and intentions. Hoovie does zip, the Wizard should be getting the money, not Hoovie.

POST 94Original post

Quotes source post: 16718144

Not sticking up for Hoovie or anyone else, but by your logic, the only people who can have car channels, magazines, give reviews, etc... are people who are also mechanics. I don't think this is rational.

POST 95Original post

Quotes source post: 16718144

what does that first paragraph even mean? You cant enjoy anything unless you prefer working on it over using it? You must be lonely that's to bad. it's a simple cost time equation when I send my car to someone else to unbolt and rebolt parts more efficiently/better than I can. In exchange for my money, I keep my time. Your club is terrible, guess I'm not a "car guy", I'm good with that. I'm also glad that your sentiments are not shared by the others in this online community I've interacted with. You are also not very intelligent if you don't understand the business model of youtube and how they are buying all of their cars. I'm not going to defend/bash any of those channels they dont care about my opinion they are doing just fine. You on the other hand were worth commenting on while I watch my brisket finish while my newly restored 911 sits in the garage completed by a skilled American business....you fool

POST 96Original post

Ha! I’ve worked as a mechanic back in the 80s and 90s and since then I’ve had others work on my car. Sometimes because they were experts. (Diesel Mercedes, Chevy transmission rebuild and Honda transmission rebuild) Most of the time it was due to lack of time. I’ve even paid for oil changes in Japanese vehicles when I had 60 hour work weeks. :O Now days I do all my own work except for tires and alignments. I have alignment tools, but the computer alignment are more accurate and less hassle for me. I would never shame someone for not working on their cars. That’s how I used to make money, working on people’s european cars. ...and for a while I was building Nissan race motors for a guy here in TX. I’m glad he didn’t do all his own work! I taught (pre-COVID) people how to work on their cars. i hope to again soon.

POST 97Original post

Quotes source post: 16718178

Exactly what his response was to and missed the whole point, gatekeeping. Can't have an opinion or content regarding autos unless you've been been a mechanic? Ridiculous. No one has said anything other than he's is entertainment, even though I think he comes off personable and seemingly genuine I understand its a show. Its all entertainment and all staged to some degree or another but that is Youtube. I like the Wizard and you think he's doing Youtube just for fun? Its another revenue stream, the guys got merch. Those two seem to have a good working relationship, hell I even like the other mechanic Johnny he goes to and wouldn't mind seeing him tear down more stuff, it looks like he has a nice shop. That being said its naive to think almost anybody doing Youtube that has any sort of following is just doing it out of the kindness of their heart. There definitely are channels that start out like that but if you can monetize why wouldn't you?

POST 98Original post

Quotes source post: 16718460

I'm a mediocre mechanic. I can do most basic stuff. I've built one race engine with a lot of over the shoulder help many years ago. I actually own two auto shops as a side business and still, I take some jobs on my car to other shops because I don't trust myself or my Midas/Firestone (that's not what I own but similar) techs to do certain things on my Porsche. I can do almost anything, but I don't really have time or desire to really get into big jobs on my cars anymore. I only do it when I feel like getting my hands dirty. That said, you'd be surprised when I talk to the managers or owners of indy shops and they laugh and say they do the same thing as me. They also use other shops or pay mechanics to work on their cars because they don't feel like it and/or want to transfer the risk if something goes wrong. Believe it or not, I actually give techs advice on how to troubleshoot and how to fix things, because I have a better theoretical understanding of some things, even though they are better wrench turners.

Jay is a walking encyclopedia of classic car knowledge. He may not know everything, but he IS very knowledgeable. Im certain he has wrenched before, but now hires really good mechanics. No one person could maintain his collection. They must be some of the best mechanics to be able to do what they do. Working on old steam engines one day and modern super cars the next. Jay is a car guy! So is Tyler...just not at Jays level.

POST 101Original post

I've enjoyed the banter in this thread, and found I know many of the channels mentioned. As for Hoovie, I find him in some borderline between an automotive channel and self-deprecating tragic-comedy. It's obviously working for him, he'll be making quite a nice sideline out of it. Regarding other interesting YT channels, I didn't hear of Heidi and Frannie's garage mentioned. It's something different given it's created by females and not just glitzy presenters but hands-on enthusiasts. The other one I really like is Home Built By Jeff: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCk_...F6sAwDg/videos He's getting toward the end of a ground-up build on a 911RSR replica, some content from his 996 daily driver, a mad Ferrari-V8-engined Alfa 105 under construction, and other stuff. No BS, no hordes of people off camera doing the actual work, just him solving one problem after another with occasional star-quality cameo's by his lovely wife. Has Project Binky been mentioned? Also great for the fabrication type stuff. https://www.youtube.com/user/badobsessionmsport/videos

POST 102Original post

Hoovie is a younger and less abrasive version of Clarkson. I like him he know a lot more than he shows. The Wizard has his own channel and I follow him to an do does The Humble Mechanic (he is a VW mechanic and know a lot about them). I also like Project Binky, it's a fascinating project to follow. There are others watch just for entertainment such as PFI, BoostedBoiz and the ultimate modern redneck, Cleetus McFarlen.

POST 103Original post

Quotes source post: 16718178

In order to have a show, yes you should actually have relevant subject matter expertise. Being a clown doesn't make one a subject matter expert when it comes to automobiles. And no one doesn't need to be a "mechanic" by trade, but you better have knowledge in this area. There are plenty of people doing other things than what they started out doing. I've had multiple "careers" to date, and will probably do something else before I retire completely too. See that's one of the issues at play here, people value "entertainment" over actual subject matter expertise. Honestly, it dilutes the value of the forum considerably and chases off real actual subject matter experts.

This is the type of response I expect from most around here. 1) You miss the point. 2) You're too lazy to even start a sentence with a capital letter. 3) Then you move onto insults. And no, you are no car guy I'd spend any time with. It also sounds like your definition of a "mechanic" is a parts changer (someone who unbolts and rebolts parts). A real mechanic actually figures out what the problem is and fixes it. And yes, if you know zip about the cars, your enjoyment of them is not the same as someone that knows more about them. I'm really glad my sentiments aren't shared by everyone, because sure enough as time goes by, everyone is becoming like a cast type in the movie Idiiocracy.

Around three years ago I was sitting on a couch in Florida watching Youtube vids and watched a bunch of Hoovie, Samcrac, Doug, Tavarish, etc. and found some of it amusing. Hoovie has done well for himself. I don't take any of it seriously. It did plant the seed that I was missing have a fun car to work on. I ended up choosing the 996 because of the parts availability, support, and not having to get into serious body work. They only way I was going to get any of my hero cars from the 80's was to settle for something with a lot of work. Body work is not my thing. The mechanical stuff I'll tackle a lot of. POST 126Original post

It seems like the Wizard who does all his work has learned a lot too since the first swap and is looking forward to doing things well. From the video, it sounded like the maker of the swap kit was not helpful at all in providing any level of technical support.

I've considered an LS swap, in another non-996 car. My 996 is going to get a F6I stage II build, which will out perform a a stock, or moderately modified LS. Also the AC, power steering, power brake, and gauges will work with the F6I build. No cutting is necessary to fit the 4.0 from F6I. If I do an LS swap in the vehicle I'm considering, it won't require a bunch of cutting either. But that project is several years off for sure! Something to keep me busy after I retire.

I enjoy watching Tavarish even more so with Jared because he drops a lot of knowledge on how different things work. Honestly, it's just cheap entertainment since cutting the cord, although Youtube has been brutal with the ads lately.

I agree. An ls motor will **** all over a m9x when it comes to tq and horsepower all over the curve. And i was being generoua with the 375whp

The car I wish I didn't get rid of was my first car, 01 Golf GTI. I loved that car and at the time I needed some suspension items taken care of, instead of fixing it I got an e46 m3 because I'm stupid. I'm still on the look out for a decent golf to have. As for Hoovie I really enjoy his channel, he has a great personality. His is one of the few where I haven't gotten tired of the content like Samcrac, or Tavarish.

I had an 04 Jetta GLI that I rebuilt, that was a fun little car and I miss it simply for the fact that I rebuilt it. I had a 2010 GTI and it was worlds better in every way but I didn't have the same attachment to it.

POST 152Original post

Motor Trend TV has a show that does exactly that. It's been on for at least 4 years.

A Porsche 911 has 2 defining characteristics: A FLAT SIX engine sitting BEHIND the rear axel. If you lose one of those characteristics its no longer a Porsche 911.

So a Subaru flat six is good to go, right ?

I'm sure he could find a Porsche engine builder that "needs" the exposure to just give him an engine. The guys at the bottom are busy trying to beat each other up, so it wouldn't take much for him to pit them against each other, and get something installed for zero dollars. He could probably have them pay him, plus give him the engine. That's how most of these things work, especially magazine articles, and features.

I've seen the dynograph for the R series. I can't disclose the specifics, but it's a lot more rear wheel HP than 375. Lots of people don't know that a stock M96 engine in the 996 Carreras don't come close to 300 hp at the wheels. They're measured at the flywheel.

POST 158Original post

Quotes source post: 17293910

NDA ? Bizarre...

POST 159Original post

I don't know of many, if any, manufacturers quoting their HP figures at the wheels. It's always at the crank. Bigger number sales more - marketing. To me at least, numbers start to matter less and less as long as I'm getting the driving experience I want.

POST 160Original post

Quotes source post: 17289660

I couldn't agree more. If they really wanted to do it "right", then they'd put the proper 3.4L flat 6 engine back into the car and return it to its original glory, not make it an LS bastard child 911.

POST 161Original post

Quotes source post: 17293924

Why is that bizarre? I'm not a client or costumer of Flat 6 Innovations. Jake Raby and I have mutual trust in our working relationship and I intend to honor that. No lawyers... no written contract... I shake the man's hand and give him my word that I'd honor his requests and protect the interests of his companies. I mean it, stand by it, and he knows it.

POST 162Original post

Quotes source post: 17293943

So... let me get this straight. You can't share a HP number because you are looking to To me, that is bizarre... It's OK to say, "yeah its awesome, it makes more than XXX" but not OK to say, "IT MAKES XXX".

POST 163Original post

Quotes source post: 17293924

Bizarre is normal here. While everyone else is busy touting power figures and bragging, we kick all their asses and have been for 15 years. To date I have never divulged a single power graph in public, in any capacity. I never will. I do show these in our webinars with potential purchasers, and I shared all of them this past Thursday in our most recent FSI Engine Sales Webinar. In these groups I am able to research who is in attendance, and do a good job of ensuring they aren't plants from the copycats. Its simple, if we posted the graphs, the copycats would just go take the time to find a graph somewhere that makes more power, then they'd lie and say that their engine makes that power.... The whole time they don't even have a dyno, or know the formula for horsepower. Been there, done that. Also, the R- Series doesn't only have 4.0, 4.3 and 4.4L variants (R40, R43& R44) but each of these has a sub designation based on the combination and how it is being employed. As an example @808Bill lives on an island, where he doesn't;t need an 8,000 RPM+ capable engine. Due to this I used my R40.20 combination, which will give him the power that he NEEDS. This means the power graphs are variable, and are only a "suggestion" in every capacity. Buyers always know what they are going to get before they sign up, and pay the cover charge. They are the only ones that matter, and I have yet to disappoint~ I don't play this game like everyone else, and that's why they can't beat me.

POST 164Original post

I don't think there is a right or wrong way to build a car if you are using good parts and not putting something together that is dangerous in terms of driving. I am also willing to take a guess that an LS1 swapped 911 will bring or more views than a properly built 3.4. Let's also not forget where we are, for the most part, the ugly duckling of the 911 world. Where a whole swath of folks doesn't think anything after air cooled matters or our car are gross because of the looks.

POST 165Original post

I don't see anyone posting dynographs.. Not in the puny M96 world at least. It is however pretty standard fare in circles with more aftermarket support, and competition which frankly doesn't exist in the M96 world and while that's great for you, its too bad for the consumer. I'm not sure who you're so worried about... But with your following and your stated backlog, my opinion is you likely have very, very little to worry about and your customers, and prospective customers are loyal, I commend you for that. It would be awesome, and I for one would love to see the graphs of the various iterations of engines you make and how you take into account the designed power band for a given application. It's too bad for the community that participates in this forum that won't happen but you run your show how you want to and that's cool with me.

"It OK to say... it's NOT OK to say"??? What are you, the RL forum speech police? Jake Raby just responded to the reasoning (above). If you really want to know the specifics of the R-series engines, then take his opportunity to find out more. When the person that creates these engines requests that I not openly post information on the forums, I don't have to question it, I know he has a good reason why he doesn't want that to happen. p.s. No, I don't know the formula to classic Coca-Cola just because I live in Georgia.

Facepalm... It's OK for you to say it makes MORE than XXX. NOT OK for you to actually give a number. I don't understand the rules I guess... ETA... The coke thing went way over my head, chalk that up to another in a long list of things I don't understand.

These are things I show in my M9X Engine Performance Class. Graphs, and how we achieve, and hone the combination to attain them. I make sure the graphs are 2- 3 generations old, and not current, but I do teach people what they need to know to design an engine combination that is efficient, won't fail, and will do everything really well. No, that class isn't cheap. I call the other guys all the time, and I love to hear them tell me about how I do this all wrong. It's fairly comical.

Meh, it looks like a fiberglass reproduction with a Subaru engine. Its like an AC Shelby Cobra replica with a automatic transmission. I own a 996, do you really think I care about what people think? haha But Id laugh at anyone driving that cheesy replica 👍

POST 187Original post

His Beck 550 is stunning, especially parked next to the equally stunning 996 cab.

POST 188Original post

I love what they have done with that thing! There is a hot rod 911 (964 i think) out there that runs the Subaru engine and it's an incredible build. Who gives a flying you know what if the drive puts a smile on YOUR face!?

POST 189Original post

The Beck is one of my favorite cars he’s had. Don’t think he’s ever claimed it’s something it’s not. Hate people that try to gate keep hobbies especially from a crowd that’s been told their cars are ugly since the late 90s.

POST 190Original post

I'd rather have a replica 550 or 356 than the real thing. I can give it modern power and reliability and drive it as much as I want without worrying about plummeting value.

POST 191Original post

Quotes source post: 17305155

I've built hundreds of engines for Beck replicas. They are great to work with, and Chuck Beck is an old friend who is one hell of a character. I have a '64 356 Outlaw, I built it to drive, and not be a pristine showpiece. With 227HP it is one hell of a riot to drive.

POST 192Original post

Looking at a new Nissan powered Ferrari 👍

POST 193Original post

Quotes source post: 17305246

That sounds great 👍 Is it an original 356 with an air cooled Porsche or VW engine? or is it a fiberglass replica with a Hyundai engine and Porsche badges on it?

POST 194Original post

Quotes source post: 17305372

No replicas of anything around here. Its a steel bodied 356 that has 116,000 race miles on the chassis. It is powered by a Raby engine. I've been waiting for the right buyer to knock on the door, of course selling a car for me is a disaster filled with jackasses galore, so for the past 5 years the car has been on display, while I tried to forget that I owned it!

POST 195Original post

Quotes source post: 17305342

That is nothing but a horrible hack job and nothing like the Beck 550 that the Wizard built for him.

POST 196Original post

I think there are plenty of well made replicas that are fun to drive that you don't have to worry as much about preserving because they aren't original and have better or more modern systems in them. That Beck looks like a lot of fun. Now, I think I'd rather keep a Fiero as a Fiero than a conversion to whatever Italian wannabe. I'd like a real 308 or Countach.

POST 197Original post

Quotes source post: 17305734

i mean as long as you enjoy it thats all that matters. There is no rule that says you cant enjoy a car because its not an original or that kit cars arent cars. Anyone that acts like that is just ruining the hobby or cares way too much about how other people have fun.

POST 198Original post

Life is short and often unfair. Be happy, sounds simple but go with it.

POST 199Original post

Except for price, Hoovie's Beck kit car is better in every way than the real thing.
