My car was at the dealership for 2 1/2 weeks for the PCCM+ install and much of it was them trying to troubleshoot "why no sound is coming out of the speakers" - they said they eventually fixed it by plugging the old radio back in, then unplugging it and reconnecting the PCCM+.

I feel like I've used all the free wires so far, but will be heading back out there after I finish working working to play around with it some more.

Would someone with a US unit be able to follow the procedure in the youtube video I posted (going to settings and pressing and holding factory reset for about 10s)?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Nope, they did seem to sound fine when it worked for a bit.
I finally got around to installing the PCCM in my MOST System.
It took a lot longer than I expected.
1. Make sure that you replace the following before installing:
996-552-231-12-01C Support frame for center dashboard trim in Satin Black for Porsche 986 and 996
99655265304 Retaining Bar
2. When you re-locate your HVAC control make sure you run the harness on the right side of the dash. There is only one place where the cables will be long enough to connect to the control module.
3. The USB media box harness needs to run to the center of the dash. The harness length is way too short. It took me 15 minutes to connect the small 10 pin connector to the rear of the PCCM, connecting it by feel.
4. You will need a PST2 to code your ecu, if you want map data to display in the instrument display.
5. I haven’t read any of the manuals yet, but operation is pretty straightforward.
6. I have a Bose system and the sound is amazing, as compared to the CDR23.
7. Make sure to install a Sirius receiver, even if you don’t plan to subscribe. Amazon has them for $35 with a free 3 month subscription.
In case you would like to have Sirius now and or in the future. The PCCM doesnt have a built-in receiver, so you have to purchase an external receiver and antenna if so desired.
Do you know if it is possible to install a single DIN PCCM in an early model 996. Just a general question I had, I’ve seen quite a few of these install posts.
mffarel - how to code the clusters? My Porsche Center said that they have only Cruise Control option.
Does automatic volume increase when you accelerate works?
Hello from Australia.
I am hoping for some help.
I am looking to purchase the PCCM+ for my 996.
As far as I am aware there are 2 different models, one for the US market (996 642 591 00) and one for the rest of the world (996 642 590 00).
From the installation manual I have found online and some information on the 911uk forum, I suspect the headunit's are identical. While they may have a different code, it seems like the subtle differences in AM/FM frequencies can be modified by way of the semi-secret menu that one person on youtube has found
You Tube
).
There is a considerable cost saving in purchasing the US model. Even if I have to purchase a couple of extra parts (i.e. like for example the DAB+ module mentioned in the question below).
Hence, I was hoping the US 996 community may be able to help with the following questions:
Does the US unit come with the DAB+ (digital audio broadcast) receiver (911 645 574 00)? The Porsche installation manual seems to indicate that it doesn't, however, the feature lists on pelican parts for the US unit indicates that it does come with the DAB+ receiver. This is even when DAB+ is not used in the US.
When entering the semi-secret menu shown in the youtube video above, is it possible to change your radio area to Europe?
This last question may be a long shot, but does anyone have a photo of the rear and bottom (showing all the technical items like part number, approvals, etc.) of the US unit?
Thanks in advance.
Thanks.
Would someone with a US unit be able to follow the procedure in the youtube video I posted (going to settings and pressing and holding factory reset for about 10s)?
I would like to see what the settings screen shows and if;
It will allow you to change the radio area to Europe, and
whether it provides you with any DAB parameter (i.e. whether it says 'DAB: Off', or whether it doesn't even have a DAB parameter).
Thanks in advance.
Not to be confused with satellite digital broadcast like SiriusXM. DAB or in the US it's called "HD Radio" is a terrestrial means of broadcasting digital audio signals on land from transmitting FM/AM towers. Unlike terrestrial broadcast television, the FCC is still allowing established radio stations to transmit analog signals on FM/AM bandwidths. Many stations embed "HD radio" digital audio signals or multicast along with establishing analog signals.
From Porsche, it appears to support DAB - (see image)
Couple questions, sorry to dig up an old post, but I can't seem to figure it out after looking through a bunch of threads....
I'm working on my install right now... 2004 C4S, no original PCM, with single CD headunit. Is there a separate ground clip for MOST systems or is that integrated into one of the other harnesses? I've seen ground clips in videos but think it was for analog systems. I've gotten the unit to power up and shut off with the car, but no sound output sadly... the Fiber optic adapter goes on the open end in the dash, and nothing needs to happen in the trunk side of things, is that correct? Any 'aha!' moment you had that I might be missing?
That sounds correct the Most Control box takes the plug from the dash. Don't forget to remove the grey protector in the Most control box so you can plug in from the dash. I think the loop is only if you had a CD changer with the double din.
HMMMM I definitely looked at the grey protector but assumed it was meant to be there and didn't try to remove it. Any chance you have a photo handy of what attaches to that-- or is that where the fiber optic goes? I feel like I've used all the free wires so far, but will be heading back out there after I finish working working to play around with it some more. Super helpful info either way, thanks!
Awesome thanks for the images, I definitely should have snapped some before I disassembled originally. I'm guessing the grey plastic part is the blocker... strangely I don't think I found an antenna wire, but I did plug a black cable in right there
So update-- I got the fiber optic cable plugged into the MOST box per Cellbret's advice. No dice. Drove the car to the office today, nada. When I stepped out to leave, the system worked! Fast forward to getting in the car a couple hours later... nothing. I also replaced fuses D8+D9 last night. I have a hunch that the battery needs replacing, I just took delivery of the car this week and it's a little slow to turn over, so thinking a flat-ish battery might be causing the audio system not to work as well...
Apologies if I'm in the wrong thread - but trying to troubleshoot a PCCM+ install from the dealer and this one seems close! My PCCM+ replaced the basic CR-220 non-Bose head unit. All is great, except the max volume is down maybe 30% compared to the old one. Wondering if there is any way to turn up the gain on these or if the installer missed something. I pretty much can't hear music or podcasts with the windows down, which is a bit of a bummer. Thanks in advance for any clues!
Tell us more about your system. Do you have a frunk amplifier? If not, the PCCM+ is setup to power the speakers from the head unit and therefore, you're kind of stuck with the limited power output. One idea is to improve the actual speakers with some that are better than the factory HAES brand.
Thanks - this is for a 2001 996 Turbo. No frunk amplifier, just the 6-disc changer, which is no longer being used. The Loudness checkbox is on in the PCCM+ settings, but it just can't drive the speakers like the old CR-220 could. Maybe the PCCM+ has fewer watts per channel? I like everything about it otherwise, I guess I just assumed it would at least be as powerful as the unit it was replacing. Will look into speaker/amp options.
Seems like you're probably the expert when it comes to these issues, having read a lot of the related threads. Do you have any thoughts for causes of intermittent sound? Mine's worked flawlessly a couple times but has gone back to no sound again lmao. I thought it could just be that my battery is going flat and causing electrical issues, but TBH haven't had a lot of time to dig in and try diagnosing.
It's a shot in the dark but did you check the volume setting per input. Perhaps it was turned down or turning it up will help a little. I think they are in the settings menu.
I'm definitely no expert, but I appreciate the nice gesture. I've just dealt with many of the Becker radios as well as the PCM modules and these are not getting any easier to deal with especially when they integrated them with the DME via MOST. My father used to install Becker radios in Porsches years ago and that's where I got my interest in communications and technology. As you probably know, Harman-Becker has been the OEM supplier for radio in Porsches for decades.
Ok, enough about me... let's talk about your problem. Intermittent sound loss has to be isolated to the source of the problem. It's easy to sit back and say... "It's gotta be the new PCCM+", but you gotta think about your particular system.
Answer these questions:
1. Year of 996?
2. Is your system BOSE?
3. If not Bose, do you have the original factory frunk amplifier made by HAES or Nokia?
4. Has any of the factory wiring been cut?
5. Did a Porsche dealership install this unit or did you install it?
6. What was the factory head unit that you replaced with the PCCM+? CDR-220, CDR-23, PCM1, or PCM2?
7. Have you tried replacing any of the original speakers in the car?
My car was at the dealership for 2 1/2 weeks for the PCCM+ install and much of it was them trying to troubleshoot "why no sound is coming out of the speakers" - they said they eventually fixed it by plugging the old radio back in, then unplugging it and reconnecting the PCCM+. Sounded kind of odd that that was their solution, but stranger things have happened. Hope you get your issue sorted.
Answer these questions:
1. Year of 996? 2004 C4S
2. Is your system BOSE? Yes.
3. If not Bose, do you have the original factory frunk amplifier made by HAES or Nokia? Is Bose. Haven't located or looked at the amp yet though.
4. Has any of the factory wiring been cut? Don't believe so. There was a laser jammer installed, but I took that out of the stack before working on the PCCM+ unit
5. Did a Porsche dealership install this unit or did you install it? Nope, I did it
6. What was the factory head unit that you replaced with the PCCM+? CDR-220, CDR-23, PCM1, or PCM2? CDR-23
7. Have you tried replacing any of the original speakers in the car? Nope, they did seem to sound fine when it worked for a bit.
Thanks for this suggestion - I hadn't checked that setting yet. Unfortunately, all the inputs were at the max +5. In experimenting a bit more, the low volume seems to be on the Android Auto side of things. The radio volume is normal/loud, so I can discount the "not enough watts" issue, which is great. I'll investigate anything in Android that may be causing it (volume up all the way on my phone, but I don't think that makes a difference.) Thanks again for the assist.
Lmao, classic "Unplug it and plug it back in" computer issues. Car is at the ferrari guy down the street for inspection right now so once he's finished with it I'll have to take a look. I think the original head unit was dead so I'll cross my fingers.
Yours has worked fine since then?
With the CDR-23, it's my understanding that Harman-Becker and Porsche eliminated the security code feature, and instead, during power-up, the head unit would go through a "hand-shake" procedure with the DME. Supposedly, this is setup from the factory. This was intended to thwart stealing or black market sales of MOST-based units like the CDR-23 and the more expensive PCM2 which had a price tag of $5,000+. Anyway, the swap-out method that your dealership used doesn't surprise me and in many cases does offer the necessary reset. Porsche doesn't offer much in the shop manual on how to remedy such a situation, and so I can see why even many Porsche dealerships are dumb-founded by the problem.
In the nutshell, the MOST-based head units were programmed from the factory to match your VIN number during start-up. Remember the "hand-shake" procedure I just mentioned? Again, Porsche has been rather silent on the issue with newer units, but it was my gut feeling the new PCCM+ eliminated that security procedure. Normally, when a new PCM unit is installed at the dealership, the technician will go through many steps using a PIWIS to configure your new MOST-based unit to your specific system configuration. There were quite a few system configurations during the 996 generation. For example, the same PCM2 unit would work with the base HIFI setup as well as the BOSE system. Of course, the BOSE system is the most complicated with audio processing, special wiring, amplifier, CD-changer, sub-woofer, etc. If you tried to install a PCM2 that would be configured for a non-Bose system and move it over to BOSE-based 996, it wouldn't work correctly without reconfiguration with a PIWIS. Hope that all makes sense. And of course, I'm not absolute on this information. I wish I could be more of a help. Maybe Porsche HQ will send me a free PIWIS and training and I'll be happy to offer more to the Porsche community. Oh well. Not holding my breath. haha
It has worked fine since I picked the car up from Porsche - though it has only been 4 days now (and 3 car trips) so it's not a long-term sample. Fingers crossed I don't have to break out the old head unit in the future if it goes mute.
For those who upgraded to PCCM, anyone have a spare CDR-23 (with codes and brackets) laying around that they'd like to sell? I'm looking for one for my 996.2 GT3, good condition preferred.
Please PM me, thanks.
I'm about to dive into this install this weekend, 2004 TT, Bose equipped
i have PCM 2 as Standard with cd changer in frunk.. ordered my Pccm through local dealer who requested my VIN and proceeded to suply me with a cage ( which I can't see I'll need as I'm double din already) also a 4 inch ground wire with hoop fitting.
currently I'm puzzled as for what I need to do with the ground wire,
I'm also unsure as to how and why i need to apparently bypass the A pillar antenna booster
and im assuming I'll need to use the fibre optic loop to isolate the cd changer
any suggestions would be most appreciated
i have 24 hrs before I dive in 👍
Update-- PCCM+ install was correct, it turns out. I checked out the amp and used some contact cleaner on it last week. Audio seemed to be sorted thereafter, but I haven't driven it since then to re-confirm. Think that will probably take care of the issues without sending the amp for repair.
