I would get a second hand **** on the marketplace here when it pops up and of you want to replace the boot can go with someone that sells the fabric for cheap.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Does anyone have experience with refurbishment on the shifter? I have a 2003 996 C2 with the 6-speed aluminum shift ****. A replacement is $900!!!! I know there are much cheaper aftermarket options. But wondering if theres a way to bring this thing back?
The shift boot is hard, crusty, and petrified from life under a southern sun - Florida & Texas. Maybe even a hole or two? The leather on the **** has a couple of holes. Even the silver parts of the **** are really scuffed up. The PO must have loved wearing right hand rings on every finger. Its a mess.

I would get a second hand **** on the marketplace here when it pops up and of you want to replace the boot can go with someone that sells the fabric for cheap. I think redline or someone like that makes replacement boots for them for cheap.
Funny you mention it. My silver bezel was missing ever since I bought the car. Always bugged me. The boot leather was also hard. I couldnt justify paying $1000 for a new one. Scoured eBay for months and came across an old Boxster assembly for $90! I had to cut the boot off from the 5sp **** as it was glued on. Zip tied it to my gear **** and it worked great. Huge upgrade.
LA Dismantlers. Probably can pick a whole unit for under $200 up to $400

Ive wondered this as well. My 99 (9/98 build) was optioned with the aluminum shifter and e-brake and it doesnt have the trim ring nor does it have any creasing or holes to indicate that it ever did.
Get some Leatherique for the boot, and follow their instructions (it'll look/feel good as new)... For the ****, get one of these;

The struggle is real, man. I cant even put to words how bad that boot feels. Its like hard plastic. And the pic doesnt even come close to showing how worn and scratched the **** itself is. The once impressive Porsche crest on it is now unidentifiable.
Im tracking down a new (used) one now.
This company has a very good product with lots of options for a new boot and shifter.

+1!
I have one of the black Delrin (because burning your hand in summertime sucks) with the white in-fill.
It is beautiful and feels awesome in your hand.
That and the 997 GT3 shifter are two of my favorite mods!

And freezing your hand in the winter (for those in the Northern clime's...). I've been wearing driving gloves recently as its been fairly cold... the **** usually warms up in a 1/2 hr or so... I actually have a Black Delrin FF **** that I bought but haven't used yet - I bought it with no fill color so I could do my own... I may paint it body color when I do my center console...
I caved in and got one. Needs a redo on the silver. Just lever straight up to separate from the leather boot?
Edit: pins are slightly angled. Came off no problem but easier when you see the orientations.
When I tried to buy it back in March they could not ship to the US I'm guessing Covid, Then they sent me an email last month (ish) letting me know they could ship to the states again. Might be locked down again. It's worth the wait, the price is right and the quality is great. Picked up a numeric shifter and a new boot, It was a good combo purchase.

This is the one I went with. I like it a lot! It seems like really good quality. I like that it has an option for the silver trim ring to match the original. And the shift **** doesnt have a Porsche crest, but still looks like it could be original. As an added bonus, I really like how the shift pattern comes on with the headlights. You can select the light color - I went with orange to match the dash lights.
That really matches your interior nicely.
I like my stock shifter but the silver on the back of the **** has a couple scratches. Does anyone know a simple fix or matching paint?
my version
Have done something similar to my 4S, thought I'd share it. Before there was just too much gray.
Swapped out gray steering wheel, console, shifter and e-brake handle.
