Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

This change in the beam creates an improved light-filled pattern when the high beams are activated.
Leading evidence: 'Fill pattern' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Fill pattern' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I had a Beetle TDi and swapped oem HIDs and to get high beams, a shield lowered on the same bulb

Thats how Ive run my 996 for some time now and will soon add the retrrofit kit to get xenon on high beams also.

Same with my 99, although someone rigged up an LED daytime running light setup.

Set the car on a level surface, driver or helper in the seat, full tank of fuel, correct tires & pressures, with something to point at.

I haven't looked all that hard specifically for testing the auto-leveling but I do remember searching for their features and how they're different from the normal lights.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So pelican parts has this harness that's a Litronic Retrofit harness. I just swapped Litronics in my 99 and they were plug and play. All lights work. What exactly does this harness do then ? Thanks

This article doesnt provide any clarity. Why is the control module and wiring even needed? The self-leveling business is explicitly said to not be a part of this retrofit (indeed, it requires sensors on the suspension that my car lacks).
The Litronics wont be Bi-Xenon without the retrofit kit that consists of a module and a harness. This means that the projector wont shift up when using the high beams. If you don't use the module you only have low beam xenon functionality.
I thought Bi Xenon meant the same bulb was used for high and low ?
I had a Beetle TDi and swapped oem HIDs and to get high beams, a shield lowered on the same bulb
Bi-xenon came with the 997 as pelican states in the article so that's not what the kit offers.
My guess a couple posts back was also incorrect but the quoted/linked article states what the Porsche retrofit kit with its loom and controller does:
"..there is an add-on controller module that you can install that will automatically rotate the orientation of the lamps up 1.5 degrees when the high beams are turned on. This change in the beam creates an improved light-filled pattern when the high beams are activated. Installation of this controller module is the primary focus of this project..."
My understanding is that bi-xenon means xenon in low beam and xenon in high beam. I have a 997 turbo with bi-xenon. Single projector that offers xenon in both low and high beams. withoout the retrofit kit you only get xenon on the low beam. Thats how Ive run my 996 for some time now and will soon add the retrrofit kit to get xenon on high beams also.
Actually in the very beginning when BMW brought xenon lights as a first on the 2nd gen 7 series (E32) no auto levelling or headlight wipe/wash was a legal requirement but it became mandatory a couple of years later and still is (at least the autoleveling) for anything with more than 2000 lumen brightness.
Less than 2000 lumen no longer requires auto leveling on newly homologated passemger cars since 2020 in the EU.
I have a '99 with the factory litronics. In the garage with the engine off I can hear the electric motor when I turn the lights on and when I flip them to high beam.
I've always wondered if mine are aimed correctly or even if they need aiming. I'm also not sure if the early factory litronics have the auto-leveling feature and how I test it.
When I had an E34 I searched high and low [pun intended] for a set of those factory HIDs off an E32. Could never find any, I think they only came about on the last couple years of the E32
A good shop scanner can activate the motor to tilt at the low, mid and high posision. U just have to look at the wall. The set points r adjustable with an allen wrench. There r many threads and vids for aiming these lights uf u google search.
Someone mentioned the Durametric can move the lights but I have a feeling that might just be on the 996.2. I'll have to take a look next time I have mine connected. I haven't looked all that hard specifically for testing the auto-leveling but I do remember searching for their features and how they're different from the normal lights.
I did just find this on the PCA website:
Unfortunately it is not super simple. To really do it right, you would need to follow the several pages of procedures outlined in the Porsche factory workshop manual. It is not in the Electrics section, but rather in the maintenance volume. However, since one of yours was never set correctly, there isn't much to lose in trying. Set the car on a level surface, driver or helper in the seat, full tank of fuel, correct tires & pressures, with something to point at. With the trunk carpet pulled back, there are three screws on each side for the adjustments. The lower one of each pair is the height adjustment. Do the low beams with this one first. The upper one does the lateral adjustment, but only when turned the same number of turns as the lower one together. The forward screw is for the foglight, so you shouldn't need that. I wonder if your dealer didn't do it correctly, except for one little detail: when you do the Xenon lights, it has to be done with the lights on, and then the car has to be switched off and back on again for the settings to take hold, and then they should be checked again. If they didn't do this just right they could have lost their alignment. You should have them do it correctly with the calibrated adjustment unit that they should have, the next time the car is in the shop for some other service.
