Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Today marks 2 years since I drove and bought my 1st 911, a 2003 4s manual with slightly under 22k miles. Nothing has been the same since. I had never owned any type of high performance car, in fact my 1st car was probably the lowest of performance cars, a 1981 Rabbit diesel 4 speed manual. Confession #1: I admittedly overpaid in 2019 for the 4s though today's rapidly rising prices have made it a nice winner now. I had a budget which would have allowed me to get an early 991 but 2 test drives in the 996 4s and it was game, set, match. Confession #2: I bought it from a dealer, BUT the salesman not only allowed me, but encouraged me, to really push the car during the 2 test drives. I doubt any individual selling a car would have allowed me to drive their car that hard. Confession #3: Had the selling dealer replace clutch/flywheel/RMS and install the LN Retrofit IMSB, not the Solution. Stupid rookie mistake in retrospect. Confession #4: I installed concealed K40 front and rear facing radar detectors which provides audio and visual warnings. It's the single best modification (used with Waze) for unleashing the car's potential off track. It's worth every penny and I couldn't endorse it any stronger. 32,000 miles and I trust it implicitly. Confession #5: I've become a Porsche addict, I bought my 2nd 911 almost exactly a year after the 1st. Confession #6: I'm thinking about buying a 3rd 911 (see #5).

You have the illness pretty bad! Drive on in good health!

POST 5Original post

Quotes source post: 17306920

Have you driven a 993 - might be disappointing after what you've been driving I had access to a 964 Cab / Tip that a friends mother owned ( very well to do ) and borrowed it for weekends and sometimes a week at a time - she preferred her Bentley - it was odd, I had the garage code and knew where the key was stashed nice ride, fast enough but I preferred the modern touches of the 996, not to mention the power difference and .... gasp the styling IMO, the 996 is a better car don't sweat the bearing - there are plenty of cars running around on the original and a lot of the retrofits and Solution customers report a seemingly perfect bearing was removed I had mine done for peace of mind as it was a good candidate ( 10 yo / 24k )

POST 6Original post

Might as well get one from every generation!

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 17306879

Cool story... glad you're living the dream, brotha! How many miles on the 996? Since it's been 2 years, you should really consider having it replaced with the IMS Solution and be done with it. May the Porsce be with you! hahaha

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17307193

32,000 miles in 2 years, car now has almost 54k total. Yes the IMS Solution will go in eventually.

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 17307202

Awesome! NOW the car is being used as it should be! You've gotten more enjoyment, at a MUCH lower cost the last 2 years, than all the other owner(s) over the first 16 years! Thanks them for taking the HUGE depreciation while saving her for you! The 2 POs of my 996 did the same thing...I thank them often...in my head.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

PO had put on only 8k miles in 11 years, criminal if you ask me.

POST 11Original post

I find myself looking at 993s as well but only in addition to the 996, not a replacement. I’ve never driven one though.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17307916

Same. Never selling 996 and never driven a 993 yet

POST 13Original post

Very interested in your experience once you do a test drive.

POST 14Original post

I really wanted an air cooled 911 from the 80s with a whale tail. The only ones in my price range were likely worn out and needed a lot to get back into running order. Thats what I grew up admiring as a kid. While I love the looks, my guess is that my 996 probably is a better handling car the way it is, and should be be considering the age difference. Always liked the 928 as well. Same issue with price and age.

POST 15Original post

Pardon my ignorance, but what is the difference between the LN IMS Solution vs. the Retrofit? The car I just took delivery on this past week has the LN Single Row Pro IMS Retrofit. It was done approx. 2 years and 4,000 miles ago along with a new clutch, flywheel and RMS. I have all of the documentation on the repair. I thought I was all set, but maybe not??

POST 16Original post

FWIW< My 2001 996 C2 Cab had the original double row IMS bearing replaced with an LN IMS Retrofit in 2014. Since the service life is 6 years I just had it replaced with another Retrofit. The tech advised that the 2014 Retrofit was "still perfect" in his opinion and it seemed really smooth to me when I shipped it back to LN to register my new one.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17308310

Retrofit IMSB has a service life of (not positive) 7 yrs or 50,000 miles at which time replacement is recommended. IMS Solution is an oil fed bearing which is a permanent fix. Costs more up front but it never needs replacing. Others will opine if i wasn't accurate.

POST 18Original post

I've also owned a 997 and 996. Both great in different ways, but also similar at the same time. I couldn't really say one is better than the other. I am curious about the air-cooled cars, like some of you are. I hope to drive them all at some point, but I really love my 996. Can't see selling it.

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 17308310

Retrofit - Like/kind size replacement ceramic/steel hybrid bearing with better running tolerances and service life. Solution - Oil fed plain bearing with life of the engine service life. 3x the cost of the Retrofit (w/o labor) and well worth the investment.

POST 21Original post

Oh man.... get the 993. It's everything you like about the 996, just amplified. The sound, the feeling, the charm, the small proportions and the curves. Very robust engine and platform. Relative to the 996, downsides of the 993 are: 1) More expensive to acquire. Costs about twice as much as 996. Probably similar cost to maintain 2) Less practical as a daily driver. The air conditioning sucks. Stereo sucks. Not as safe. Controls aren't as ergonomic. Minor details, however. 3) It's not as fast, but you won't mind one bit. Sometimes I almost feel that my 996 is "too fast" to really stretch its legs on public roads. The 993 is more charming because it's not as good. Less refined, stinkier, louder, bumpier, etc. I've done mods to make my 996 more "raw", motor mounts, strut mounts, suspension, exhaust, but it still doesn't capture that same feeling as the 993.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
