Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Long time lurker, new poster. I was hoping someone could give me some advice I am looking at a 1999 996. The car has 60k miles on it and is in great shape. The body is completely mint and it has the aero package, with full leather package. The owner bought it 4 years and 3k miles ago but knew the previous two owners. When he bought the car he put 7k worth of work in including the IMS from a very reputable shop. Brought it to mint. The shop even had great things to say about the car. All sounds great right? Here's the catch. I had the PPI done today and it needs a differential. It's not broken but it whines over 35mph. It's not bad and they said I could drive it for a long time without worrying about here. Here are my two questions: One - is there an easier/cheaper fix then putting a whole new transmission in? Two - I am still thinking about the buying it. The car is mint besides this and has the major repairs done. It also comes with a second set of 18" wheels that are OEM with tires. I will probably sell them or put winter tires on it. It has the full aero and brand new rims and tires on top of being mint mechanically besides the differential. The price is near 20? Wanted to see what you guys think If anything is off, I'm sorry. I am new to this. Thanks for the help

POST 2Original post

bought my aero with a blown apart engine in Europe for 11K usd (now that euro and usd are basically identical) also mine has done alot more miles. minus for mine it is a Tip car, and the first generation slow and stupid Tip if the car is mint apart from the whining diff the price seems (to me) ok

POST 3Original post

FYI I bought a 99' cab with 32k miles last week for 18k. You can do better than 20k. My max would be 15k on that car... if he wants 20k then he should get it fixed first and IMO he's still high.

POST 4Original post

aren't the aeros a bit higher in prices than standard Carreras? in Europe they are pretty rare, of course over here sometimes you can come across a working car for 9K but that can be a high mileage and "tired" car

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes they are. The coupes here seem to be more expensive as well. From what I've seen.

POST 10Original post

Have you contacted any local indy's to ask what the ballpark repair cost might be? I'd start there and use it as a bargaining tool. On the other hand, with spring coming there is bound to be other buyers in the market. If you truly love the car and the PPI checks out, I'd feel comfortable pulling the trigger at that price. Especially with the options, aero package, and past service.

POST 11Original post

They said you could drive it a long time without worrying about it? Who they? Get an estimate to replace tranny/diff and adjust your offer accordingly. Or walk away. There's always another car.

POST 12Original post

What is the cost to replace or rebuild the tranny? If you are prepared to pay for that then go ahead and you'll have a car that will be solid for some time. I'd try to negotiate the price down a bit. That car looks sweet with those wheels.

POST 13Original post

You can find a tranny on ebay all day long. If the car is mint and PO put $7K into it....I would buy it. It's a used car, it's going to need something. I paid $22K for a 99 C4 aero with 31K miles last November. I am really happy with the car!

POST 14Original post

This. I recently paid $20.4k for my '99 Aero that had 64k miles. Full leather, silver gauges, LSD. It had an unknown service history so I've put about $5k into her as preventative maintenance. What color and options are this one? If you like the car, don't hesitate to buy it.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the all replies. Below is a link for some pictures. https://db.tt/14bzAOz5 I am still undecided but need to make a decision today on the car.

POST 18Original post

It seems like what is stopping you is this trans work. IF you are willing to bear the cost of the worst case scenario (new trans?) plus the $20,000 asking price, then you should be handing this man $100 bills this very second, because the maintenance on that car is very enticing. If you're not comfortable with the burden plus asking see if he will take $18,000 or maybe $19,000 to offset the cost. If not, you have to make a choice, one that will be difficult. P.S. Personally I am not an aero fan (besides 964 RS America) but a lot of people go nuts for them. If you are one of those people this seems like a nice car

POST 21Original post

Walk away. There are lots of 996s to be had that have been taken good care of with no issues.

POST 22 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Guys, I ended up buying the car! We agreed upon a lower price and I've already put about 500 miles on it (an oil change before anything) and it runs great. It had been been averaging about 1000 miles a year over the past three years and the engine keeps getting smoother as I drive it. I'm going to assume it does need a transmission within the next 3-5 miles but I do not really hear a whine and am going to wait until it gets a bit worse before tackling it. It will be a good investment for the car. I appreciate all the help guys and am happy to be part of the club.

POST 23Original post

Don't get talked into believing that there are a million mint 996s out there and they're all going for half what your seller is asking. If you really like the car and the only neg is the whining differential and you can afford the fix...ask for a little help from the seller...but if he isn't budging on the price and you like it, buy it.

POST 24Original post

Four years of ownership and only 4K miles? Something doesn't sound right about this. A diff needing bearings? Something doesn't sound right about this either. When in doubt, run the other way. relinuca

Sounds like you came to grips about your concerns. I love my '99 coupe and have enjoyed it since '06 when I purchased it. Glad you pulled the trigger.More pics when you have a chance.

POST 26Original post

MZBos congrats on the acquisition. That is a fine looking car, and damn those wheels are nice! Cheers

POST 29 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys. I have been driving the car for a few weeks and dont hear any whine. On top of that, everything great. Happy to join the club!

POST 30Original post

I think you made a great choice. Although the first batch of 996's have some issues of their own, they have proven to be VERY stout in other ways. Enjoy the '99...nice looking car, but I _might_ be biased: Nice wheels. Not a perfect match, but close!
