I had to chuckle that the display actually reads "Check Engine; Drive to workshop".

It was expected, as I'd been dropping by the shop on my way home from work every few days to check on progress and get my p-car fix.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Well, after a long 4 month wait, my 996 is back on the road as of last Friday. You'll have to excuse the delay in providing an update, because Friday was also the day my daughter was born! But, as this is a Porsche forum, I'll start with what is obviously more important to you bums..
Recap:
My engine blew up 2 days before Christmas. Not sure what happened, but the engine is now with Jake Raby and I hope to find out soon what the problem was. I toyed with selling the car, but couldn't bring myself to do it. I found a donor engine from an identical '03 Carrera here in Houston with ~57k miles on it and had the transplant done over the past couple of weeks.
She's Alive! (Part I):
Got a call on Friday that the car was ready to be picked up! It was expected, as I'd been dropping by the shop on my way home from work every few days to check on progress and get my p-car fix. Unfortunately, it was raining heavily and I didn't really get to drive the car the way I wanted to. Got it home and into the garage. Since then, I've looked for every little excuse to go out for a drive. Picking up my son from school in the 996 was very exciting for him and a great reminder of why I wanted the car fixed. He's gone out into the garage every day for the past few months and asked "Porsche broken? Oh no. Needs new engine?" It was really cute.
She's Alive! (Part II):
Now for something a bit more personal, my daughter (kid #2) was born on Friday morning at 4 am. One of the few things that could overshadow getting the car back by a long shot. It's been a very exciting few days for the Thompson family. She and momma are healthy and happy. Incredibly fast labor; 1.5hrs total and only 13 minutes from the time we arrived at the hospital. Below is my son holding my daughter for the first time when we got home from the hospital.
Now you have to sell the car so your daughter and son don't fight over who gets to drive it. Beautiful looking children. And I'm happy you kept the car and found it a new motor. That is what owning a great car is about.
Oh no...this is definitely "Daddy's car".
My son, when he's of age, will be lucky to get a Fred Flinstone car that he powers with his own two feet. This is the boy that, at three, is constantly saying "I want to go TOO fast daddy. I want police man!" or "Daddy, you catch that car?" as he points to the car in front of us. I didn't teach him these things.
But I'm a very happy man for sure. Driving the car this week really has confirmed that I made the right decision to keep it.
They truly have. There are a few minor glitches like, oh, having to pay for the engine/repairs and then paying an equal amount to the taxman, but otherwise I have no complaints. I wouln't mind a weekend of clear skies and every LEO in my county on vacation...
Hey!!! Congrats!!!!!
Your motor is the one I was about to buy until I found a closer one. The seller was having a hard time getting it out of storage at the shop, since the shop owner was in the hospital near death from a spider bite. Seriously!
So, did you name her 996 or IMSB?
Since I'm the sharing mood, here are a few more pics. Since baby sister is keeping mommy pretty busy, I've taken the week off of work and have been picking my son up in the Porsche each day. He loves it.
On the way home. He's ordering me to "go super fast!"
He wanted to wash the car when we got home. I was okay with that!
Is that a California Waterblade? I LOVE mine that I had for over 10 years and still going strong. I squeegee my whole car with it. I was hesitant before I got one but saw some pro detailers using this to dry Ferrari's and Lambo's which convinced me to get one. I never looked back since.
I love those things. My dad clued me in on them a few years back and it's been such a big help. In the Texas sun, I never used to be able to dry a car before water spots appeared. Now I can get 90% of the car dry in less than a minute and touch up the rest. Are there still people that don't use something like this?
I always use one for the same reason.... squeegee's off most of the water in about 30 seconds. Then one large waffle-weave microfiber towel to go over the car, and I'm all set.
However, until this pic, I have never seen anyone else use one.
Pretty tiny place you have there Andrew, congrats on getting the car back! Keep the car in good shape and you'll be able to share the experience with your grandkids as well....ask me how I know
It's AMAZING how long surgical silicone can last. Mine has sat out in the sun numerous times too and no UV degradation. I have to admit I picked up a different brand as a second backup and it was nowhere close to the original. That "T" blade was a great design and patent.
Starting to feel a bit snakebit with this car! After driving it all week last week and to work all week this week, my Check Engine light came on while driving home yesterday. I had to chuckle that the display actually reads "Check Engine; Drive to workshop".
I drove home and took the Touareg to work today. I'll have to wait until tomorrow to head back into the shop, but I'm feeling frustrated. Likely this is something small, but still...
A bit late to the post, but congrats on both fronts, a great 911 to drive and more importantly a growing family. The story about your son asking if the Porsche is broken is too cute. I hope all the best for everyone.
