Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

(Similar to the wind deflector that pops up in the front when you slide the roof open) I just checked my car, and that piece in the rear is just hard plastic with no rubber attached to it.
Leading evidence: 'Check car' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check car' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
My mechanic had to take everything apart to replace the seal, and he mentioned that several clips had come loose under the roof panel.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

A bunch of them just said the dealer fixed it, but with no details on what was done.
Since I got my car at the beginning of this year, I've chased down all of the rattles one by one, and thought I pretty much got them all fixed. With the recent warmer weather, I realized that wasn't the case. My sunroof has a nasty rattle, only when it is open. (Not tilted up...only when slid open)
I've searched every thread I could find, and I'm not sure I really found anything helpful. A bunch of them just said the dealer fixed it, but with no details on what was done.
Several of the threads mention the support bar in the headliner, although I have doubts that is what is causing my rattle. I say this because that was rattling in my car when I got it, with the sunroof closed. It was put back into position and has been fine since. Also, pushing up on that bar does nothing to stop the rattle.
I can easily reproduce the rattle - With the roof open, I can stand outside the car and hit the front edge of the sunroof, and it makes the rattle every time. (Hitting that bar in the headliner makes no noise.) When I do this, it sounds like the noise is coming from the sunroof panel itself, although I know that these things often sound like they are coming from an area that they aren't.
Trying to see if anyone has any ideas before I drop the headliner....which I really am not looking forward to doing.
Did some more searching / reading, and found something I missed before.
I saw mention of a few people who were missing a "sunroof edge protector", part # 99756467100. Can't find any decent pictures of this thing, and the factory diagram doesn't help much either.
If I understand the description of this part, it's supposed to be a rubber piece that attaches to the plastic deflector at the rear of the roof opening that pops up when the roof is in the raised position. (Similar to the wind deflector that pops up in the front when you slide the roof open) I just checked my car, and that piece in the rear is just hard plastic with no rubber attached to it.
Thinking back to one of my earlier rattle fixes, I may have found this part sitting in the rear of my headliner a while back...and subsequently tossed it in the garbage.
I went ahead and ordered the part since it's only $33, but would love to see a better picture of it in place.
Has anyone replaced this part? Or can anyone take a look at that deflector on their car and let me know if it has a rubber strip on the top edge? (Or even better....snap a pic of it)
Thanks in advance
from my experience when i owned my 1999 996, the sunroof rattle from the headliner support which was located just behind the drivers head - it was an annoying rattle whenever you drove over a bump.
if the noise is coming from the front top of the sunroof, it very well could be the air deflector or hardware being lose in that area.
That is the rattle I have... Center, behind my head, EVERY bump, annoying to the point I don't drive with the sunroof back.
Anyone have a link to a DIY fix? TIA
I had the same rattle. It was especially annoying when driving over a railroad crossing with the sunroof open. I wish I could give you details on how it was fixed, but I can't. All I can tell you is that the problem can be fixed. My sunroof seal failed, causing substantial leak every time it rained. My mechanic had to take everything apart to replace the seal, and he mentioned that several clips had come loose under the roof panel. Once he reassembled it, the rattle was gone.
Just wanted to follow up on this one for anyone who finds it in a search in the future.
The part # I referenced above (99756467100) was the solution. Took about 30 seconds to install, and no more rattle.
