I would stay away from 996 and early 997 models as NB cut costs on them by using inferior soles and materials.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I was looking at the new balance shoes and noticed a definite correlation between their shoe model names and 911's. I don't believe it is a coincidence as it isn't just this shoe that's name is the 996 their is others named the 997 and the 993 etc. Anybody know the reason behind this?

POST 2Original post

So what do the 996 ones look like. I like and wear NEW BALANCE shoes but I never noticed the numbers, where are they?

Look at the tounge of the shoe it says 996

POST 5Original post

I would stay away from 996 and early 997 models as NB cut costs on them by using inferior soles and materials. There are 26 modes of sole failure and lace bearing is always a major concern on those models. Jake Raby documented multiple instances of lace bearings failing mid-run, causing balance failure. Here is the instance of the catastrophic lace bearing failure mid-run on the 996. Hilarious!!! Jogger Tells TV Reporter 'snow is 'perfect for running' and falls on HER BUTT Live - YouTube

Haha that was classic! Good to see humor in the 996 forum. I was afraid of getting flamed for something so off topic

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

They should make a new balance edition 991 with the amount of special edition versions of the 991 made, it wouldn't be too much of a shocker hahaha

How much is the deviated lace color going to cost?

POST 13Original post

The deviated laces are only available with the sport chrono odor eater insole package. $1850.00

POST 14Original post

No detail is to small, only the finest craftsman work in that cleanroom. My friend puts the little plastic piece on the ends of each lace by hand, yes its tedious but in the end its the little things that make these the ROLEX of the shoe world. Like almost all precision products there have been some issues. There is a class action lawsuit pending on the 996 shoes as it seems that the rubber that was used in the toe area on the mid year models has caused ingrown nails on some of the owners that live in cold climates requiring amputations in the most extreme cases. A special pair of socks have been invented and the claim is that if you are wearing one of the bad batch of shoes you will have a burning sensation in the socks early enough to bring the shoes back to the shoe dealer for a possible replacement. Some shoes are not covered but can be bought to an indie shoe shop to have the rubber coated with a barrier substance which is good for a limited time depending on your shoe size and weight before it should be applied again. I have these shoes and wear them daily with no problems so far but I mainly run in them. It seems that more problems arise if the shoes are closet queens or are just used for casual walking.

POST 15Original post

But the shape is weird!! They look like..........fried eggs!!!

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 12223386

Reasonable, now what does everyone think the best color combination is? Do they offer a Dye To Sample option? If so I'm thinking Mauve uppers with Peridot laces could make a statement.

POST 17Original post

Clearly, Porsche has been copying New Balance, not the other way around. The New Balance 996 was released in 1988, and the New Balance 997 was released in 1991. I see a major law suit coming. After all, as we all know, the 911 was originally to be named the 901, but Porsche lost out on that one, too. Next thing you know, Porsche will build a new model they name the Air Jordan. .

POST 18Original post

The NB 918 shoe is what I want. A little pricey and you never take them out of the box, but you can tell all your friends you have a pair.

Not yet, but there are specialty shops offering a full or partial blue vinyl wrap to mod the 996's into a 997 look. Or you can call Fonzy and plastidip your 996's

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 12223823

Notice the smaller N on the 997 model as opposed to the big almost fried egg looking N of the 996 model. I sure am glad they went back to the original design with the new 997 model.
