I installed a Numeric in the 996 and removing the shifter that was in the 996 when I bought it, it was actually a B&M SSK.

I replaced a stock 996 shifter with one out of a 997tt.

While your are at it consider replacing the shift link.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So I know lots has been posted about this before, but I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for so I decided to start a new thread. If that bothers you please don't read on or respond.
I have the choice to go with a new B&M short throw kit, or a standard 997TT shifter used, for around the same money. Who has had experience with these? How much shorter is the standard 997TT shifter vs. the 996 standard shifter?
Kab I have the B&M ssk and really like it. I don't have any experience with the 997 stock shifter. The B&M really tightened up the throws and my Cab now shifts with bolt like action. Works very well on both street and track. I would certainly recommend.

I have a 997 and had bought a 996 a few years ago. Upon picking up the 996 C2, I felt the shifter was TERRIBLE in comparison to the stock 997 shifter. I installed a Numeric in the 996 and removing the shifter that was in the 996 when I bought it, it was actually a B&M SSK.
The stock 997 shifter is a much better feeling shifter IMO. Go a 997, or a GT3 shifter if you want a SSK and OEM.
I've had direct personal experience with both of those plus three other ones(don't ask).
If all you care about is a shorter throw and don't mind some notchiness, the B&M could be a good fit. If you are willing to sacrifice some of the throw for more refined feel, I would go OEM 997 SS.
Tried my friends original OEM 997ss, it is amazing. I opted to get the same myself, but only got around to getting the OEM 997 shifter. Will whole heartedly recommend both options.
Thank you for all the replies. I went with the b&m simply because it was brand new, with warranty and return policy, and was only $165 shipped (usually $250 plus shipping I think) so it was a low risk deal, where if I don't like it I can always sell it and buy a 997 shifter for $100-$150 and the market is steady.
I have the B&M shifter, I really love it. I believe a have a 997 GT3 shifter in my other car and it feels very long compared to the B&M. I can't even remember what my original 996 shifter felt like but the 997 shifter feels like stock compared with the B&M. All though I've heard reviews that the 997 SSK is short like the B&M but way more smooth. I don't know for sure about that but my B&M is plenty smooth for me, that or I have just gotten used to it.
I have had my B&M SS for 6 or 8 years now and love it. Fells a bit stiff and notchy at first but you get used to it fast and it is so much better than the stock 996 shifter. While your are at it consider replacing the shift link. The OEM is plastic and wears out and gets sloppy. Here is what I used.

There are other brands and you can find this one for less than $125. The SS shortens the throw, but if the shift link is also worn there can still be play in the shifter. IMHO!
Maybe replacing the shift link is what I need to do. I have a B&M that has started to feel a bit sloppy. I've got 63k on the car, but I have no idea how long the B&M has been in it.
I used to have a B&M and currently have the 997 SS and you are correct in that B&M is shorter throw.
For those wanting shorter throw, I wouldn't bother with the regular 997 shifter. 15% reduction is barely noticeable hence the reason why they go for 100-150.
MHarrison,
You may want to try tightening up the cables first and see if that resolves it. As all shifter components wear, they don't engage at the same points when they were new. All it took in my case was to move up the cables a couple threads to get a tighter engagement again. YMMV
Got to take my car out for a drive last night after installing the 997 shifter.
I replaced a stock 996 shifter with one out of a 997tt. Approx. 41k miles on the 996 shifter, approx. 19k on the 997 shifter.
The improvement was better than I expected. The throws, as stated above, are not that much shorter. Enough to feel a difference, but not a huge one. The bigger improvement is just in the feel....the 997 shifter feels far less sloppy than the 996 one.
Certainly worth the $125 I spent and the hour or so of my time to do the swap.
