As you probably know the engine comes filled with 0w-40 and most owners stick with that as most dealers buy this oil in bulk in large cans (small barrels) and use this to supply oil to the oil dispensing gun at each service bay.

Suspected cause
As extanker observed, overfilling is probably the source of the smoking though a leak could contribute to the smoking.

Suggestion
For a long time I stayed with 0w-40 but here in CA where I live the winters are mild and the summer can be quite hot (100F+ daytime highs) so I switched to running 5w-50 year 'round.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Gents,
I just recently had finished re-installing the engine from a crack head situation, used Costa-Mesa R and D to redo the bad cylinder head, and cant be more pleased with his work.
While I was in there, I decided to do the IMS bearing, AOS, and nearly all of the cooling system including lines, hoses water pump etc.
I finally got a few other problems I had been struggling with figured out and got a few hundred miles on the engine so I decided to put it through its paces.
I have seen several threads pointing this problem to being either a bad Air Oil Separator, or maybe valve guides?
It only happens when you are completely WOT in 3rd gear after 5,000 RPMS and above.
I did a few runs to try to figure out what exactly was going on and the car pulls very hard
This is also doesnt happen when neutral revving or in 1st or 2nd gear.
I noticed underneath the engine that I have a small oil leak not entire sure from where, and if you really beat on the car and let idle for a moment then shut it off and come back after a while and turn it back on you will get a momentary puff of smoke then all is fine.
Also after running it hard you can see under the car that some of the exhaust pipes are still smoking a bit from oil being on them, which also leads me to believe this could be a leak?
The leak seems to be coming from either the front of the valve cover on bank 1 or the AOS itself, or the solenoid cover for the VarioCam.
The rear bumper does have some gunk on it but it is so oily it leads me to think its a leak rather than a burn. Also the exhaust tips dont show any residue of burnt oil.
Thoughts? Suggestions of common points to leak? Ideas? Could I have installed the AOS incorrectly? (the car was apart for 2 months and I forgot to take pictures, I ended up using alot of Logary's 1 Month 1 Rebuild 325 pictures thread alot to figure things out).
It does not smoke when revving down which eliminates valve seals (plus 1 head is all new valve seals and just had a valve job).
It didnt smoke that I noticed before I took the car apart (all 28 hours I owned it before realizing the head was cracked).
It also does not smoke every time I do a run either, if you do two back to back the smoke is far less the second time.
I am running Total 5w-40 in ambient temps of around 40-70 degrees (Michigan it can be that range of temps within the same hour of a single day).
I did a fill of about 9L which means I overfilled it (had some conflicting sources on how much oil it took).
your last sentence could be the source of your problems. next it could be the aos. Last but not least you do not say mileage...an old no-no with cars is do not do a complete valve job on a motor with many miles on it........they can start to smoke. oil going past rings now
Probably not valve guides unless the valve job was poorly done.
As extanker observed, overfilling is probably the source of the smoking though a leak could contribute to the smoking.
Remove some oil and get the level down below the max line. Be sure with the engine fully up to temp the hot oil level isn't too high.
Inspect the engine for any oil leaks and fix any engine oil leaks you find.
I didnt really get a choice on the valve job, it had to be done when the head cracked (as it cracked extremely close to one of the valve seats).
The work done on this head was top notch, but the other side of the engine is all original, since it wasnt broken I didnt fix it.
Correct me if I am wrong but its pretty hard to hook up the AOS incorrectly?
I am not new to working on cars, just new to Porsche's.
I will post up some pictures of my thoughts of Oil Leaks this evening.

This is similar to my situation, could it really be that simple, as you all have said?
What weight oil do most of you guys run?
There are 3 multi-viscosity classes of oils approved for use in these engines. 0w-40, 5w-40, and 5w-50.
As you probably know the engine comes filled with 0w-40 and most owners stick with that as most dealers buy this oil in bulk in large cans (small barrels) and use this to supply oil to the oil dispensing gun at each service bay.
However, some owners prefer to run a 5w-40 oil and a few owners even run a 5w-50 oil.
I have run both the 0w-40 and 5w-50 oils in my two cars (2002 Boxster with over 290K miles and a 2003 Turbo with over 133K miles) and both oils work just fine.
For a long time I stayed with 0w-40 but here in CA where I live the winters are mild and the summer can be quite hot (100F+ daytime highs) so I switched to running 5w-50 year 'round. There was a time when I ran 0w-40 in the "winter" and then in the summer switched to 5w-50 but as I mentioned above the temps here are mild even in the winter so 5w-50 it is. Full time.
(Might mention I have driven in extremely high ambient temperatures with both cars. 116F in the Boxster and 119F in the Turbo. In all cases the engine was just fine with 0w-40 oil, before, during, and after the exposure to the high ambient temperatures. Really I think 0w-40 is just fine for every one but some owners would disagree and for them there are the 5w-40 and 5w-50 oils.)
IF you live where it gets real cold, -25C or colder, I believe the Porsche guideline is to run 0w-40. At that cold a temperature the engine needs the cold oil flow the "0w" provides. I would not risk engine damage by ignoring this guideline.
