I just installed a set of these that I picked up used.

Buying "better" used seats was futile for me as all the ones I found were in poor condition or not good enough to justify the expense and bother to swap.

Suggestion
My front seats have seen better days, the guy that replaced my vert top said he could reupholster them but it was not cheap.

Suggestion
The only thing that they lack is the ability to run full harnesses as they only support 4 pt.

I do like the power options and priced out a set cover set from Lseats.com for 480.00 and I'm pretty confident I can do it myself so that's hard to walk away from at that price.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Mine are worn and baked from living unprotected under a southern sun for many years. Time for a new set - BOTH!
Option 1 - get the current seats recovered. Thats possible. I havent looked into it yet, but I suppose it could be done. How much should that cost?
Option 2 - find close match replacement used in the same color, and MAYBE same options. Mine are 8-way electric, with memory, and heaters.
Option 3 - seek out lighter options that fit. Can we go on a diet by finding a set of seats that have no heat and manual adjustment? Will those seats fit in my car? Will they be lighter?
Option 4 - explore Boxster seats and other cars. Id expect 986 Boxster seats to be a very good match. How closely matched are 997 seats?
i think my only requirement is that the same fold forward operation needs to be intact. I take my kids from time to time, and the back seat needs to be accessible. So no hardback racing seats that dont fold.
Thanks for any forum wisdom on this topic!
Lots of seats out there pretty regularly as replacements if you have black interior and even grey and brown come up every so often.
996 and Boxster seats are identical, except that if you find parts sold as Boxster parts they are usually less expensive...go figure.
Losing the heated piece won’t save you weight. Losing the 8-way for manual sliders may save you some weight, but I believe the power seat controller also controls the driver mirror tilt-down feature in reverse.
997 seats can be swapped and have better support and bolsters in my opinion, but everything from seat connectors to power seat controller and seat belt receptacles are different. Be prepared to do some work. You may find it’s worth the effort though.
Thats perfect. I kinda assumed 996/986 seats were interchangeable, but nice to have it confirmed.
Losing the heat function would not cause me any sadness. I dont drive mine in the winter at all. That opens up more options.
Would this be out of a 987? Are they plug and play into a 996? Id guess not, but might be interested if theyd fit and be functional with minimal modifications.
You mentioned southern sun. Where bouts are you? I have a set of black sport seats in my garage that havent been in a car in 10+ years. I put on leather conditioner couple times a year. I plan on putting them in my car and just never got to it. Located in El Paso. Seats are Black. They are Garage kept up on a shelf. Not perfect but clean.
Id love to have them, but Im in Minneapolis, MN. I bought this car from Dallas last Fall, where it sat outside for about three years. The previous owner had it in Florida for 5-10 years.
Up north, our cars are eaten by snow and salt. Down south, it seems you guys get all your soft parts cooked. Especially black leather interior parts.
If youre willing to ship, maybe we can make a deal?
You can split the difference with option 1. I ordered new leather covers from LSeat.com and installed them myself. Buying "better" used seats was futile for me as all the ones I found were in poor condition or not good enough to justify the expense and bother to swap.
If you haven't don't upholstery before the 986/996 seats aren't the easiest, so you could bring your worn seats and replacement covers to an upholstery shop in your area. Then at least you're not paying big margin on parts they order or make themselves.
987 seats will fit into the 996 - I'm not sure if it's a direct bolt in, but I've seen it done many times.
I made an inquiry to a local interior shop for recovering my Sports Seats in new leather, and the quote was more than a (new to me) set of Sports Seats in the correct colour.
If you're good and flexible, regular Comfort Seats come up often; try to find Boxster ones, which are always cheaper (but are the same).

I'm in the middle of this project right now. My 996 came with 8 way power comfort seats with memory and no heat and I'm swapping in 987/997 hardback sport seats with manual fore/aft sliders, but power recline and butt warmers. As Subourbonite mentions, the 997 seats physically bolt right in, but none of the wiring is plug & play between 996 and 997. You can bolt your 996 seat belt latches onto the 997 seats, so that saves one wiring conversion, but everything else requires some form of splicing wires/connectors together. I'm willing to lose my seat and mirror memory functions, but if keeping those options is important to you, you will have a much simpler time staying with 996/986 seats vs converting to 997/987. To keep your 8-way power & memory functions while converting to 997/987 seats, I believe you'd need to swap the memory ECU from your 996 seats onto your new 997 seats and then do the wiring conversion between the 996 memory ECU and the 997 seat. It's probably do-able, but I wouldn't want to tackle that. If you go to a 987/997 sport seat with manual fore/aft and no heat, you really just have the seat belt latch to swap over and then supply the seats with 12v for the power recline (2 wires). Much simpler.
Man I love those seats and have been watching them now that I found a set in suede. I do like the power options and priced out a set cover set from Lseats.com for 480.00 and I'm pretty confident I can do it myself so that's hard to walk away from at that price.
Id rather not ship. For something like this id rather meet someone for inspection and hand them over. Although id love to sell them, i was hoping you were phoenix/tucson area.
I love Phoenix. Especially this time of the year.
Seats are tough to ship and buyers can picky. I understand the concern with a sight unseen transaction.

Can't say I like it in 996, shape seems rather too square for bubbly car and design...
much better in 997
I just installed a set of these that I picked up used. The bolstering is great and I think they look at home in the 996 interior. I am planning on using the car as a dual duty street/track car so being able to keep the rear seat access was important. The only thing that they lack is the ability to run full harnesses as they only support 4 pt. Since I'm needing the rear seats a rollbar and harnesses are not currently an option so the bolstering on these and 3 points should work well.
Those Recaros do look good. My front seats have seen better days, the guy that replaced my vert top said he could reupholster them but it was not cheap. It doesn't help that my interior is Savana Beige so there aren't as many aftermarket plug and play options.
