I'm currently running basically stock internals with the exception of a new trans rebuild (including a WaveTrac) that's currently sitting in my garage waiting for time on my buddies lift to get installed back in the car.
Leading evidence: 'Install back in the car' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Install back in the car' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Are you going to try to use Porsche Caliper upgrades, etc...

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey guys, I picked up this 996 Carrera (2002) with some bore scoring. I have some big plans to revive it and develop a nice street but track capable car. The current plan is to rebuild the motor and bore/sleeve it to a 3.8L. I wanted to share some vlogs as we dive deeper into it.
You Tube
Jon, looking forward to the build. Out of curiosity, what are you going to do to mitigate oil starvation and oil pressure stability in the new 3.8 engine?
We haven't gotten that far yet but will probably do a X51 oil pan. I've got a 987 Cayman build we'll be focusing on this fall/winter that will be more track focused.
Yes most of the 996 guys are experienced wrenchers Im not I have 10 thumbs so if you can keep some explanations easy for the technologically lacking
thanks Mike
Jon,
Take a look at Zbomb's "Oil Pressure Stability" thread. You will get plenty of ideas and perspective on the issues and bolt-on solutions that are currently available (IMS, UAOS, Deep Sump, 3 radiators), as well as solutions in the works (UIDS, LN Oil Cooler). You may have other solutions that are internal to the engine that you will be implementing that address cooling and oil flow. All of which we would like to hear about.
Appreciate the thread and communication.
4 Pot, it's their ST-40 kit. This is going to be more of an OEM+ / Light Street type build so we just wanted something with new hardware, competitively priced and good performance.
We're doing F&R, they are both 355mm rotors, so a pretty solid size for the car.

Hi Jon, I'm not too far away over in Palm Coast and also doing a 996 track build. I'm currently running basically stock internals with the exception of a new trans rebuild (including a WaveTrac) that's currently sitting in my garage waiting for time on my buddies lift to get installed back in the car. I've done the usual IMS, RMS, AOS, water pump, wheel bearings, etc. I've added the LNE 2-qt sump kit. The engine had good compression and normal cam deviation with no ticking or smoking when I picked it up last Oct, but I've also been thinking of a rebuild to increase displacement.
I've swapped out the stock suspension for the M030 ROW and have a set of Apex SM10 wheels. Also installed an Auto Power roll/harness bar and in the process of installing seats and harnesses. I'm trying to decide on an aftermarket steering wheel setup and interested in hearing whether you're planning to upgrade or remain stock? Also, interested in your StopTech brake upgrade as I'm still on stock calipers with Ferodo racing pads. Is the StopTech kit a direct fit?
I'd love to stop by and take a look at your project and see what you guys might be able to help me with. I'm a DIY guy but like to buy stuff from local business when I can and I also know where my DIY skills end and I need to get professional help, i.e. engine refresh/rebuild.
Good luck and I look forward to seeing your progress!

$7k seems like a lot of money for the Stoptech upgrade. Wouldn’t the stock Brembo setup be close with the Martin’s larger rotor adaption and some good track pads and fluid? I don’t see where the Stoptech kit would be $7k better than this, but I know rotor width and heat dispersion would be your biggest benefit with Stoptech.
In addition to your points, a stoptech, Brembo, Alcon, etc. Brake Kit provides huge unsprung weight savings versus oem brakes. You don't need to buy a new big brake kit. Just wait for big brake kit calipers to come up for sale used and you can probably get it for half price. Obviously, you need to check and see if the calipers need to be rebuilt. But it's a relatively easy process. Calipers are chunks of very durable metal, so a used set is not like buying a used plastic or rubber piece that could crack or crumble.
You can find fairly priced Girodisc 2 piece floating hats. It's the floating hat system that provides substantial weight savings within a big brake kit. I have a Brembo big brake kit 355 front and 345 rear on my 996.2. I am about to replace my rotor discs with girodisc. Looks like I will go from $3000 to approximately 1800 maybe lower with girodisc. Huge savings for a high quality rotor made in America.
Don't have the individual component weights to memory, but if you go with a stoptech or Brembo big brake kit at 355 F and 345 rear, you will save ~20 lbs. Most of those weight savings come from the 2piece floating hat. Small amount comes from caliper weight savings. Girodisc are equivalent in weight to the Brembo and stoptech discs. Just less expensive.
Weight doesn't matter if you are just driving around town. But 20 lbs of unsprung weight savings on the track is like boosting HP. 2 piece floating hat system is where you save weight. It also provides more effective heat management.
