Also I am working on a youtube vid on how to take apart and replace the LCD on these PCM1 radio, its not very difficult.
Leading evidence: 'Replace lcd' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). The dealer was able to give me a code using the Becker short 8 digit serial number but that code seems to be for the Navigation.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I provided the dealer with the Becker serial number as they requested off the side of the unit but the code they gave me seems to be the Nav code which starts with a 7XXX and did not work for the PCM/Radio code.
Hello all. I bought a used PCM1 Becker/Siemens Radio/Nav unit model 2582 for my 02 996 on Ebay figuring the dealer could get the Radio/PCM code. I've read just about everything there is posted on the web about this unit but it does not seem I can get the radio code with out the original VIN according to the local dealer. I provided the dealer with the Becker serial number as they requested off the side of the unit but the code they gave me seems to be the Nav code which starts with a 7XXX and did not work for the PCM/Radio code. You can not enter this unit to turn it on with out the PCM radio code first. My local dealer did not seem to understand that there are 2 codes for this radio, a PCM/Radio code and a Navigation code.
Ive been working on this for a month now for a customer who wants to stick to OEM but I can't quite find out if the dealer is the only source and if the dealer can get the PCM code with out the VIN.
Thanks for any help
Have you tried contacting Becker for the radio code? My PCM1 is factory so I was able to get both codes from Porsche with my VIN, but without a VIN I think you will need to go directly to the manufactures (Becker & Siemens) for both codes.

The dealer was able to give me a code using the Becker short 8 digit serial number but that code seems to be for the Navigation. There is a "Long" Siemens serial number on the side of the unit as well starting with P. My old factory radio cards show that the PCM code matches the long Siemens serial number suggesting Siemens supplies the PCM/Radio code. I have dealt with Becker Sound and they were not very helpful.
Ahhh very interesting. I put the Siemens serial number in and the site recognized the radio and says it will email me the code for 24GPB. Going to give this a try and will report back.
Please keep us posted, it will be interesting to know if there are other solutions besides needing the original VIN.
There are some tools available elsewhere on the web for reading/writing new codes to radios, but not sure of all the required hardware, etc.
No response yet from the radio code link although the said 24 hours. I will update as soon as I find out if this works. Also I am working on a youtube vid on how to take apart and replace the LCD on these PCM1 radio, its not very difficult.
Well unfortunately the radio-code site in the UK refunded my payment to acquire a Siemens radio code. It looks like the only way to get the PCM1/Radio code is from the dealer with the original radios matching VIN number. For some reason the dealer can get the Becker Nav code with your current vehicles non matching VIN but not the Siemens PCM code. I wonder how they did it back in the day with vehicles that had radio swaps not matching the VIN? Or my dealer is a bit green on how to get the radio code. Hopefully a Porsche service advisor with experience can chime in with some current info.
From the radio-code website:
I am writing in respect of your recent car radio code order on our website,
Unfortunately, your code is not held in the manufacturer's database based on the serial number
you have provided, therefore we are unable to supply it to you over the internet.
Due to the fact that we are unable to supply you with a code, we have issued
you with a FULL refund which should show on your account within 1- 3 days.
damn... looks like I am going to have to go with an aftermarket radio after all. It is crazy to me how difficult this is. Seems so wildly unnecessary to brick a car radio like this. Like...what's going to happen to it? Someone gonna steal it and put it in their Toyota? lol
I hear you Whitlock. The exact same words came out of my mouth. These radios are highly unreliable as well. Its crazy to me that no one knows how to get the codes. These radios are so old that I found Porsche service advisors don't even know what they are and were probably in middle school when these radios came out as an option.
Yup exactly... I really wanted to keep the classic look of the center console, but it is not worth all this trouble. I really only listen to sports talk radio while I'm driving so if it worked all would be fine. Now I have to get something pretty expensive just so it at least looks nice and not too futuristic and out of place. Best of luck to you as well with whatever you decide to do!
There are ways to extract the codes from the EPROM inside the radio but it depends on how tech-savvy you are...and what tools are required. Apparently if you can get a flash dump from the EPROM you can read the codes. Snooping around online I found some procedures and EPROM reading software available, but it's just a matter of how far you want to go to keep the stock/classic look. This company will do it for 50 Euros if you supply the unit:

Good info gbarron. I am pretty good at this stuff I use to rebuild cell phones back in the day and have lots of equipment. I have a spare PCM1 radio unit and have completely disassembled it. The problem is there are so many darn chip sets in it I cant tell which is the master for the radio. Ill take a look into your link. Thanks
Apparently the PCM1 is very similar to the Nav/Radio unit used in Alfa's of the same era and there are posts online about retrieving codes from these units. NY04 software seems to be commonly used, and here is some chip info:
PORSCHE PCM NAVIGATION 2 x CODE
BE2580
BECKER + SIEMENS SAB80C535 + SAK-C167SR-LM
24LC02
FLASH
PORSCHE PCM NAVIGATION 2 x CODE
BE2582
BECKER + SIEMENS SAB80C535 + SAK-C167SR-LM
24LC02
FLASH
If you can get a flash dump from the 24LC02 chip you can probably solve the mystery!
Unfortunately I was never able to get the correct code for the radio, even from the dealer. I was able to rebuild the LCD and got the screen to light up again. I ended up selling the car with the locked radio as the new owner wanted original radio only.
