Reported fix
I had an on going issue with no start after engine was hot, replaced relay and problem solved.
Leading evidence: 'Replace relay' (1 discussions report resolution; 0 report an unsuccessful attempt). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'when the engine misfired in 4 of the cylinders' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace relay' (1 discussions). For that action, 1 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. The most frequently reported fix is 'Replace relay', supported by resolution reports in 1 discussions. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The top was hard coming up and down, but we found a leak and replaced a seal on one of the hydraulics and refilled it with fluid.

When we took them out, they were the worst condition coils I've ever seen, so we replaced those and the car ran completely fine.

Haven't tried replacing the fuel pump, but I'd be surprised if that was the problem since the car is in fact running for a decent amount of time although I could be wrong on that.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My grandfather and I own a 2004 996 C2 that likes to run for 15 minutes and then promptly shut off and won't start again until 15 minutes later. After those 15 minutes, it doesn't run for very long so we normally have to wait a day for it to run the whole 15 minutes. We're not sure what the problem is, it could be the fuel pump, the relays, or possibly the fuel filter (although it's supposed to be a lifetime filter). If anyone could get me started on what this might be from experience, please fill me in and I'll keep the thread updated.
An engine requires 3 things to run. Fuel, air and spark. U need to determine what u r missing. U can do the 2 ways, start replacing parts until u find the issue or buy/borrow diagnostic tools to determine the issue.
if u trust your instincs just buy a fuel pump and see if it fixes it. If u want to do it correctly get a multumeter, fuel pressure tester set up and a code scanner.
Start with an obd scanner, $15 from amazon and works with an app or a foxwell if u want decent. There is also a Durametric that ryns off a laptop too. These will tell us if the car has communication issues or faults. Not everything trips the light.
Next is fuel pressure. Some parts stores will rent u a kit. I dont think the 3.6l has a port so u will have to put the adaptor in line and monitor the pressure. Then use the multimeter to make sure the pump has power.
Lastly is air. Probaby the easiest and should be done first. Open the air filter and make sure the mice have not got into it or the squirels havent loaded it with acorns.
This is your starting point. Report back when u get more info.
How long have you owned the car? Is this a recent development? As you can see from my location, I'm right up the road from you. If it comes to that I might be able to help. I have a Durametric, but let's see how the advice from this thread and what you do with it plays out first, newb. Best of luck to you.
You might want to check to make sure the gas cap vent is open. If it is clogged you could be pulling a vacuum in the fuel tank and preventing fuel from getting to the engine
A lot of suggestions here. The easiest and least expensive thing to try without extensive diagnosis is replace the fuel pump relay. I had an on going issue with no start after engine was hot, replaced relay and problem solved. I even carry a spare relay with me because they are known to fail.
Haven't tried replacing the fuel pump, but I'd be surprised if that was the problem since the car is in fact running for a decent amount of time although I could be wrong on that. No codes from an OBD2, air has all been checked and is good. Pump does have power although I'll try to check the fuel pressure with the port shown by
@amargari
. Thanks though, I'll report back when I figure out how the fuel pressure is.
We've owned the car since 2017, everything worked at first but we could tell the maintenance was subpar when everything sort of started to shut down. First was the back window, but that was an easy fix with a new motor. The top was hard coming up and down, but we found a leak and replaced a seal on one of the hydraulics and refilled it with fluid. The worst issue was when the engine misfired in 4 of the cylinders, which being new to the real big Porsche mechanic scene we weren't sure what the problem was. The car ran, so we took it to a shop and turns out it needed new coils. When we took them out, they were the worst condition coils I've ever seen, so we replaced those and the car ran completely fine. Now, we're running into this problem. If you live over by Fleming Island, let me know and maybe you can help me out in person. That Durametric may come in handy.
