Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I'm also looking at replacing the cam chains and chain tensioners (and all that goes along with that - basically what I understand to be a top-end rebuild).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The last time I posted this, I saw only one response. So I'll try again (insert smiley face). I just received this Blackstone analysis report for my 2001 C2 996. It shows high silicon and iron, but low aluminum. The car has 155,000 miles on it and, from what I can tell, the IMS has never been touched in the life of the car. I am planning on a new clutch and IMS bearing in the near future. I'm also looking at replacing the cam chains and chain tensioners (and all that goes along with that - basically what I understand to be a top-end rebuild). In this upcoming major, major service, I want to address as many of the existing issues as possible. Questions : Do you agree with the comments from Blackstone? Are there any other reasons why silicon and iron would be high in the absence of bore scoring? Do any of you have any recommendations beyond those in the Blackstone report? Thanks, Mark

POST 2Original post

Not a good report...need more background info Silicon being high could be from recent engine work, ( silicon sealer), or from dirt ingress ( air leak or filtering not adequate) , or worst case Lokasil ( bore scoring). Without high Aluminum bore-scoring is less likely. Iron being high could be caused by a failing IMSB, or from timing chains/gears, cam/lifter wear.. Did you inspect the filter? any debris in there? any noise from the engine? What is the hot oil pressure?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I was also thinking that bore scoring was not likely, given the nominal amounts of aluminum. My planned work would cover the IMSB and the timing chains/gears and cam lifters and tensioners, so that should address a possible source of iron. I haven't inspected the filter for debris, but I'll have the shop report on that. There's no noise from the engine other than some racket on startup that I attribute to the worn cam tensioners. Hot oil pressure is good.

POST 4Original post

My aftermarket IMSB started failing a year ago. I first noticed the ferrous metal in the oil filter. I also had a high iron content in my Speediagnostix UOA. I second the suggestion to check your oil filter. You will probably see magnetic flakes there if it's an IMSB.
