I just replaced my mass airflow sensor (PSM and ABS lights were previously on and it wouldnt even start)and technically, it now runs beautifully: I drove 40 minutes on the highway today, engine is running super smooth, warning lights are all offlife is great.

Common procedure is to replace both "while you're in there" , or you can wait and visually inspect the "y" cable to see if it's melted, or you can replace starter, then do a "voltage drop test" to see if the "y" cable or any other cable is faulty...
Leading evidence: 'Replace mass airflow sensor (psm and abs lights were previously' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Inspect "y" cable' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. I replaced the starter and Y-cable (easy to both while in there) as well as the battery and its hilarious how fast the engine turns over now.

Ill try over and over, and if Im luckyit will eventually sluggishly fire up, but then as mentioned, will run just beautifully once its moving.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The problem is, it's still having trouble starting.
Hi, wanted to see if anyone had a hypothesis here...
I just replaced my mass airflow sensor (PSM and ABS lights were previously on and it wouldnt even start)and technically, it now runs beautifully: I drove 40 minutes on the highway today, engine is running super smooth, warning lights are all offlife is great. Plus I just put a new battery in.
The problem is, it's still having trouble starting. It totally didn't start well on the drive above, and two hours after that drive, it doesnt want to start again. The engine turns over 1-2 timesno more (which I dont understandtypically, the starter will continue turning as long as youre turning the key in the ignition). Ill try over and over, and if Im luckyit will eventually sluggishly fire up, but then as mentioned, will run just beautifully once its moving.
Any ideas whats going wrong here?? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
Bad starter or cable...
If the amperage used in starting exceeds a certain amperage, it will drop the voltage too low to keep the start relay engaged, and will drop-out (cease to spin)..
Thanks for everyone's help. So far we have 2 votes for a possible bad starter (which sounds incredibly costly), just to ask...@Porschetech3, you mention it could simply be a bad cable. Can I ask which cable you're referring to and if there's any easy way for me to test to see if that's the culprit?
The starter "Y" cable is a known culprit, you can Google it and find lots of info/examples on this.
Also just FYI and failing starter can also cause the "Y" cable to melt and visa versa.
Common procedure is to replace both "while you're in there" , or you can wait and visually inspect the "y" cable to see if it's melted, or you can replace starter, then do a "voltage drop test" to see if the "y" cable or any other cable is faulty...
+1 to the above.
My 2004 C4S had a hard start issue, especially when hot. Engine would turn over slowly or not at all. Battery gauge read 12-13.5V under various conditions, never at 14V. I replaced the starter and Y-cable (easy to both while in there) as well as the battery and its hilarious how fast the engine turns over now. Hot, cold, whatever. And battery gauge shows 13.5-14V all of the time now.
The Bosch OEM starter itself was not expensive ($250 on
Amazon
now) and the Y-cable was cheap ($59 from
Sonnen Porsche
, which my local dealer price-matched). As long as you have a good socket set with some universal joints and wobble extensions, the job is not difficult at all. You should try it and ask this forum for help!
Not an expert here, but I had a somwhat similar issue on my 200C4 Cab. It was narrowed down to a failiing Clutch Pedal Start Control Switch at the base of the clutch.
Here is another vote for bad starter or Y cable, or both. 20 year old starters aren't going to cut it. Do NOT get a re-manned starter. Get a new Bosch starter. You can get one on Amazon.
Meh, remans r sub $200 and take less then 2hr for a skilled mechanic and a day for a first timer. The cable takes more work but its not that hard. All in all a 3 out of 5 bananna job on the monley scale.
I'd add the crank position sensor too. So many reports of cars with similar behavior and this little sensor being the culprit. Cheap and easy DiY replacement.
Thanks so much for everyone's help. I'm pretty mechanically inclined, but I think it's probably at the point where I'll need to take it in...since I simply don't have the knowledge for all the electrical diagnostics. Really hoping the damage isn't too bad :/
Thank you again
