* Prior to replacing my original mount/bushing, I had installed a FF (black) insert.

Eventually I replaced the mount/bushing with a new one, and at the same time changed the inserts from the FF black (hard/race durometer) to Powerflex yellow (street/medium durometer) - Wow!

I think it had already been replaced once as the urethane "washers" that are supposed to be next to the mount were not there.

I am debating whether to put in Function first orange inserts while I have it accessible versus replacing the mount (which requires me to rent or buy the AGA transmission mount tool).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Last year I was talking to my local indy (after he put in new motor mounts) and told him the shifting on my 2003 C4S was not very precise (compared to my VW GTI anyway). He suggested I might want to try transmission mount inserts. The car has 105K with not much in the way of service records, so I was thinking I might need a new transmission mount. I got under the car today expecting the mount to look pretty chewed up and and it looks OK, with maybe some slight tearing? I think it had already been replaced once as the urethane "washers" that are supposed to be next to the mount were not there. I am debating whether to put in Function first orange inserts while I have it accessible versus replacing the mount (which requires me to rent or buy the AGA transmission mount tool). Anybody here use the FF inserts with an older mount or should I just bite the bullet and replace the mount - or do both?
honestly, i didnt notice much difference. The shift action on my 67k 2001 c4 is sloppier than my 200k mile b6 s4 and wifes b8 s4 but not horrible. I bought these with their motor mounts intending to change both. But I also found a bad front CV at the time so I didnt get to swap the motor mounts (which are sagging and do need replacement). I have not driven the car much since then. Like you, I also noted that my transmission mount was aged but still intact without visible cracking.
So its not a definitive improvement in my limited experience.
I did replace the mount using the AGA tool rented from Dporto. I decided to just go stock (without inserts) for the moment anyway. I have not yet driven it as th car is still up on stands as I prepare for my next project - brakes.
You can't really tell anything by looking at an installed mount/bushing (no, a bad bushing won't look "chewed"... In fact, you really can't even see the rubber part until you've removed all the mounting harware). You can pretty much bet the bank that with 105k miles on your car the transmission mount/bushing is shot. At the very least, you should replace it with a new one. If you want the new one to last forever, install an insert from either Function First or Powerflex. In addition to making the bushing last forever, the insert will also make shifting more precise*. Depending on the hardness of the insert you use, you'll notice some level of NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness) - the harder the insert, the more NVH you'll notice.
* Prior to replacing my original mount/bushing, I had installed a FF (black) insert. Even though my mount/bushing had collapsed, I was able to install the insert (with lots of grease, prying and pushing). While shifting did get better, NVH increased a lot, and I still had occasional problems getting into 1st gear (especially when cold) and it would pop out if not seated just right. Eventually I replaced the mount/bushing with a new one, and at the same time changed the inserts from the FF black (hard/race durometer) to Powerflex yellow (street/medium durometer) - Wow! What a difference. The yellow inserts with the new mount/bushing were night and day better - very little NVH nice crisp shifting, and first gear hasn't been difficult to engage even when cold (ice cold in fact since I've been driving the car all winter). If you're on the fence, jump off and do it!
I was curious about this mod. My car isn't really sloppy but I thought it would be a fun improvement since I put in the short shifter a while back I thought it might add a little better shifting. My engine mounts seem to be fine for now, no sagging. I went with the Function First
SPORT (70A) | Yellow - for tuned and sport-oriented performance street cars, with less NVH than TRACK version. Wow, the NVH is definitely noticeable, the shifting feels a little smoother (but not much difference). The car definitely feels more raw is the only way I can describe it-in a good way. The original mount/bushing was not in bad shape (definitely not worth replacing) and fit it after some finessing it in. Only about 20 miles on it so it isn't a real review yet, but I like it. Just thought I'd share my 2 cents..... I am by far a race car driver or AutoX epert, just a fun, spirited driver. Not sure if I were to do it again I would try the softer orange ones????
I had my mounts redone when I bought the car in 2016, so had no real reference point. However last year, I had the yellow FF inserts installed and WOW, it was a clear and immediate improvement. That led me to install their metal shifter bushing and engine mounts. I love the feel of the total package. For the price, it is a great deal IMHO.
I wish I had a better way to explain it, but when on track in a turn (where you need to shift up or down), there is a clear/solid (not loud) transition between the gears. A little bit of a thunk or some direct feeling. Without it, there is some delay/rubber feeling to the shifts.
Make no mistake, you will feel more driveline vibrations all the time, especially at lower speeds. I personally like that, but not all do!
