Congrats, I to bought and saved a non running 996 back to life....But took the faster easier route of stuffing a low mile used motor in it (while waiting for an FSI rebuild) and couldn.t be happier!

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

20 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

1999 c4cab bought on the cheap .Impulse buy,Craigslist two years ago.125,00 miles. No ppi .Car not drivable.Engine ran.Car was parked in previous owners driveway was hit by delivery truck.Needed left front fender, headlamp, bent front strut/shock,ac condenser ,radiator, torn bumper cover ,no damage to unibody.Took my time sourcing parts to reassemble.Found Rennlist...thank you Ashai, outNspace, logray, coopduc, team harco and yaz to name a few, documenting their projects.Armed with knowledge from this forum, dropped the sump...... bearing material rod, main, thrust found.I am a long time wrench ASE certified in the mid seventies .Cut my teeth on air cooled vw s back in the day...intrigued by this 996 engineering.Took drive train out this weekend.I am prepared to give all the love this engine needs $$$$$$$$$$$.i wont be documenting my journey but will be checking in from time to time.Let mission creep begin. POST 2Original post

Love it.... Giving an old 996 a second chance....great project! As my good friend who has passed taught me..."it's about the journey and not the destination." Looking forward to the occasional update.

POST 3Original post

Best of luck with this project, a worthy restoration candidate indeed, and from the sounds of your background you are certainly up to the task!

POST 4Original post

Im sure u have seen that Jake from flat 6 has a full video series for rebuilding these motors. They are not cheap but neither is screwing up one of these motors. Both Scott and Yaz, the 2 current motor remans current being done on the board, used them. Good luck.

POST 5Original post

That's a BIG project you've got there (Engine, body & chassis work - Oh Boy!) ! It seems you've got the perfect background and temperament to take it on though...Good luck with it - can't wait to see the outcome.

Do not go into the rebuilding of that engine without the information available from the DVD set (Focus On: M9X Engine Assembly). I got mine from LN Engineering. You'll want one, too. Best of luck. Keep your stick on the ice.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It’s great that flat six has provided a wealth of information for the 996 community,l applaud Jake and supporting cast.

POST 9Original post

Congrats, I to bought and saved a non running 996 back to life....But took the faster easier route of stuffing a low mile used motor in it (while waiting for an FSI rebuild) and couldn.t be happier! Keep us posted and get the video series by FSI. You'll thank us later!

POST 11Original post

If you are not going to document any of your work then what's the point of starting a thread?

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

ouch, I did say checking in from time to time insert shrug here ____.

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 16604838

and right before that quote you wrote " i wont be documenting my journey...." So what's the point of posting then? What use will this thread be to anyone in the future if nothing gets documented? This is a technical forum where people come for information that was populated by others. Others that took the time to document what they did so it would be of help to others in the future. That's what this forum is all about.

POST 14Original post

Good thing we have the RCMP to keep order around here.

POST 16Original post

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Disassembled engine down to the crankshaft.#6 rod bearing spun, the two most foward(towards flywheel) getting ready to spin and pounded out.Crankshaft junk.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Vario cam pads as you would expect with 125 k didnt have 5mm .9 right hand threaded rod laying around,so this worked in a pinch. (Pun intended) yeah I know...... Ill clean my horizontal catch all (work bench) when I reassemble engine. It was nice kneeling on the ground out side in the sun.😳

POST 19Original post

Damn! That's too bad. If you can get your hands on a good used crank with the carrier and con rods attached, that would be the cheapest way to go forward. Thanks for posting your progress.

POST 20 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Interesting reading on yazs thread,Baz weighing in with info regarding the DMF hanging in the breeze. On another note. I went down stairs to look at my unserviceable crankshaft and lo and behold the pilot bearing is M.I.A...??#%!1 car is equipped with a manual transmission .Many,,,, scenarios come to mind, it was removed at some point during clutch change and not reinstalled,Engine was swapped out with a tiptronic engine and bearing not installed,or wasnt installed at factory (unlikely) but..... I procured a later style crankshaft From Norspec (toothed style ims chain) and have a toothed style ims shaft on its way to me.Previous crankshaft and ims was duplex chain. Had crank magnafluxed alls good, now have to do due diligence on measuring carrier, crank etc.... my 68 428 Scj had a major ridge in the cylinder bore Back in the day,but 996 engine with 125 K (if original engine) has none. I know different materials different technology...just sayin...
