Before I replace the 36 year old motor mounts, I have to finish replacing the 22 year old timing belt though.

I bought a set of the 6 ton stands after my house burned several years ago to replace a cheap set that was damaged.

I had no plans to change mine, but I decided to replace every wear item from the shift **** to the transmission and that lead to transmission mounts, which lead to motor mounts....

And who knew you could change motor mounts with just two jackstands (I had a couple that were not the stands in question)...

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Thanks for the info. Our four 12-ton and four 3-tons not on recall list, and when we purchase two 6-tons will ensure they are also good.
Sump 22 inches off ground, system could go a few inches higher enough to drop engine. Bottom of car completely open, and with 6 points of support won't fall over even major California earthquake.
Thanks for posting this. I bought a set of the 6 ton stands after my house burned several years ago to replace a cheap set that was damaged. They are still in the unopened box. I will check this evening.
Holy Sharp Cheddar Cheese! I was just about to go downstairs to swap out motor mounts on the e30 with some of those holding the car above me, thanks SO MUCH for the PSA! I (potentially) owe you my life!!
I sure will (potentially)
But seriously, thank you. Youre the thunder as far as Im concerned, as I didnt see that sticky!
And who knew you could change motor mounts with just two jackstands (I had a couple that were not the stands in question)... and I did it under an hour, yay me!
I've never been a fan of those ratchet style jack stands regardless of where they were made.
That's great to hear as motor mounts are my to-do list. The car only has 114,000 miles and isn't showing symptoms but they're rubber and 36 years old now.
Before I replace the 36 year old motor mounts, I have to finish replacing the 22 year old timing belt though.
Recalled jacks or not, I always put something else under the car when it is up in the air. Usually it is the rims/tires that I pulled off the car or leave the hydraulic jack pumped up under it. This is just a habit I have developed years ago to use as a secondary safety measure in case the car moves and comes off the stands.
Great looking e30! Is that an '87 with euro bumpers? Love the Hartge wheels. If you're replacing all the other ancillaries while replacing the TB, motor mounts will be a snap. I had no plans to change mine, but I decided to replace every wear item from the shift **** to the transmission and that lead to transmission mounts, which lead to motor mounts.... you know how it goes. Mine is a bit of frankencar as the project was started long before these cars started being worth anything. Should have kept it original, but I LOVE the way it looks and drives now.

Good info to include in this thread. I always have a floor jack supporting whatever end of the car I'm working under for sure... too many stories of jack stands failing.
^^ Your e30 looks great!
No, it's an '84 European market 323i first sold at the BMW dealer in Frankfurt. It has a lot of cool Euro features like headlamp wash/wipe, headlamp leveling system, close ratio sport trans with the dogleg shift pattern, under seat fire extinguisher, trunk storage cubby and other stuff that I'm forgetting.
I am also a big fan of the Hartge wheels and I was lucky enough to find a NOS wheel for a matching spare. It also has a Hargte gauge pod, strut bar and valve cover. I have a Hartge trunk wing and an H23 head that I haven't gotten around to installing yet.
Man, thank you. Just checked and mine are recalled. Scary thought.
Though, I
always
put the peg locks in them, which I imagine mitigates a good bit of the concern, I'll still be taking them back.
