When I look at the pictures for that unit, and those of other cars where people have already installed a double DIN unit, the HVAC control always seems to be moved to the bottom half of the lower console.

This is exactly the setup I ended up with when I replaced the older Alpine single DIN with a Pioneer unit with BT.

The metra kit I used only works with the HVAC in the lower position.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey team 996, I'm thinking about getting the new PCCM plus double DIN unit when it becomes available in North America. When I look at the pictures for that unit, and those of other cars where people have already installed a double DIN unit, the HVAC control always seems to be moved to the bottom half of the lower console. I'm wondering why no-one seems to leave the tray in the lower position. Seems to me like the HVAC would be partially blocked by the gear shifter in this position. Can anyone that's done this chime in and edumacate me? Example: PCCM plus promo - tray is at the top, HVAC at the bottom Stock 996 - tray is at the bottom of the lower console

POST 2Original post

Like this? Well its a bit more work as it wasnt designed for that spot and u have to custom cut a bezel to finish it off.

POST 3Original post

The metra kit I used only works with the HVAC in the lower position. The shifter doesn't cause any issues.

POST 4Original post

As De Jeeper said, you can absolutely have the HVAC in the upper spot. That is were we put it in our car. But you have to be willing to do some cutting to do so. There is no bezel that will accept the HVAC in the upper spot, so you have to take the one you already have and trim it down, you have to make your own brackets to be able to screw the HVAC in place as well, and you have to trim out the upper spot to accept the HVAC. Easy stuff, but you have to be willing to cut up the centre stack.

POST 6Original post

I have HVAC controls in lower slot and have not had interference from shifter. I do have SSK installed.

This is exactly the setup I ended up with when I replaced the older Alpine single DIN with a Pioneer unit with BT. The HVAC wire harness was a pain to get down there, I had to fully disassemble the connectors to get the wires properly routed. The HAVC unit is more difficult as you note but you get used to it.
