Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Like Lowpue said, probably a radar or laser detector installed somewhere.
Leading evidence: 'Install somewhere' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'radar or laser detector installed somewhere' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Install somewhere' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi, just picked up my 2004 996 C4 this week. Every time I start it up, it beeps 5 times. This happens whether I wait before turning the engine over, or if I just start the engine straight away. The beeps happen 22 seconds in.
I have a short video of this - if anyone has any ideas.
You Tube
Many thanks
Rod.
Your oven is up to temp. (sorry, couldn't help myself). Like Lowpue said, probably a radar or laser detector installed somewhere. I have a V1 but it makes a different sound when it powers up.
Go drive by a sign that posts your speed and see if it beeps or go drive it and have fun and listen to it beep when you get pulled over. That's a radar detector
Thanks for the responses, however, I really don't think it is a an alarm or speed radar. The same beep - single one this time occurs when you first turn on the ignition, so it must be a Porsche beep and not an aftermarket noise.
It didn't make the noise when I test drove it last week, or when I drove it home this week. One thing that I was doing was playing around with the audio and sat nav and other settings. I wonder if it has something to do with it?
Any further thoughts ?
Thanks. Rod.
Doesn't sound like a factory option, have you tried pulling off some panels to see a control box?
I'd look under the steering wheel and then under the carpet panels that join the centre console to the dash.
I have looked all over inside the car and cannot find anything that is non-standard. I went for a long drive near several radar speed cameras, but no beeps.
They sound like standard Porsche warning beeps, but I cannot work out what they are trying to warn me about.
Do the mk2 have a programable speed limit alert? Maybe its set st 0?

did a quick goggle search and found this
edit: link is funky, here is a screen shot
I think the OP has posted it on both Pistonheads and here his username is the same. I vote to keep looking, Also try under the seats I have seen aftermarket units installed under there too, or even the passenger foot well.
I thought you were onto something, as I was playing around with this setting before it happened. I have set the speed limiter to 95mph and no change. The speed limiter works well though 😀
That is definitely not an OEM sound, I agree with others on it being some sort of aftermarket equipment. The 996 chime sound is a lower tone. When removing the seat belt as the car is in motion does it beep with the same frequency?
Hmmm....interesting problem....did you check the fuse box and see if any wires have been added or an "add a circuit"
if so pull the wire and see what happens
IMSB is about to blow...
Agree that it’s definitely not factory. Any extra lights or indicators in your center console? Post up some more pics of the interior and frunk area, maybe we can spot something.
