Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Check fuses' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check fuses' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
Id visually inspect the compressor clutch to make sure its actually spinning when the AC button is pressed.

Suggestion
The idle may change regardless of if the compressor turns on.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I tried txhe simple recharge route also - it didn't work...
New to me 2002 c4s having a/c issues. Compressor fires up no problem (at least I think, change in idle when a/c is flicked on). Recharged the system with a can from the local auto parts, still no cold air coming through. Rechecked it a few hours later, still showing sufficient pressure in the system but no cold air.
Any ideas what could be the culprit?
The idle may change regardless of if the compressor turns on. I know this because idle increases even when its 25 degrees outside, and Im pretty sure the compressor will not come on at that temp.
Id visually inspect the compressor clutch to make sure its actually spinning when the AC button is pressed.
Also check that the front fans are coming on when you press the AC button.
Turn on AC and put the fan on about medium. Get out of car and walk to the front and listen if the fans are coming on both sides. Then open the engine lid and look at the AC compressor. You are looking to see if the electromagnetic clutch is actually engaged. Maybe have someone help with this part by turning off the AC and then back on. You want to know if the clutch is engaging by observing the action. Have you checked the fuses for the HVAC system. There is also a Relay for the AC in Relay Support Group 2, behind the rear seats and under the carpet.
Hmmm... Take it to someone who does AC system work, so they can evacuate and then re-charge the system. It will cost you a little more (probably around $200) but it will be worth it, and it'll be done right. I tried txhe simple recharge route also - it didn't work... In fact it made mine even worse. I took it to a shop and they fixed it in about an hour for $200... Good luck
