Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

Also you'll want a leakdown test to test the valve stems/seals and rings.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My friend is considering buying an 80k mile florida based 996 targa and is about to move to PPI. When he called an indy shop and asked about bore scoping, they indicated that they would instead do a compression test and leak down test. Not being a mechanic, is this an acceptable alternative? What exactly do these tests reveal? Thanks

POST 2Original post

There is no alternative to a properly executed bore scoping.

POST 3Original post

Compression and leak down reveals the overall health of the cylinder, rings seating and valves/valve stems. Bore scoping is the only way to see if there is any bore scoring.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the responses. He found another indy who will do a proper bore scoping as part of a comprehensive PPI. I will update info as i get it.

POST 5Original post

Compression and leakdown test will let you know if the engine has suffered from extensive bore scoring. A borescope will catch it much earlier, or let you know that it hasn't yet started. Glad he found a different Indy that will borescope. Just make sure they're bore scoping from above and below. If they're not pulling the sump, looking at what's been caught in the bottom of the sump AND bore scoping from below, then I would look for another Indy. Also you'll want a leakdown test to test the valve stems/seals and rings.
