Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

After a few months of learning, and asking, and figuring, I think I got this down to a manageable plan. I drove 4 cars, and know for certain what I don't want, but some of the other things are going to be negotiable. WILL NOT HAVES: Black, silver, gray, white cars. No, no, no. Which hurts my list really bad. 6 speed manual. Another big limiter. Turbo Negotiables: AWD(C4) Interior color, materials; Prefer tan, salmon, slate gray. Dislike black, but that won't stop me(can change it if I want). Aftermarket wheels and exhaust. Like to have the IMS done, but if not, I'll do it myself once I buy. Must have: Coupe aero pgk, or cabrio Tip trans 99-04 So, I've set myself up for failure big time with my limitations. But - it's what I want, and it's my money, and you can't make me neener-neener. Price around $20k. So, if you see it out there, and I haven't yet, pop it in my thread and I'll have a go.

POST 2Original post

There are lots of 996s out there. You'll find what you want. Just be patient. Don't be afraid to buy one on the other side of the country and drive it home. My 996 was a C4S and it was a very specific color combination that I wanted. I searched for months until I found it, and then I flew out to California to buy it and drive it home. The MK I aero cars are beautiful and you should be able to find one in your price range. I'd suggest a C4S, but you might have trouble finding a good one in your range. Good luck with the search!

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So far, this is my best bet. No one is allowed to poach it either! http://hartford.craigslist.org/cto/4669727371.html Anyone around NYC that can put eyes on it? I'll buy you a beer when I come collect.

POST 4Original post

996 cabrio tips are actually pretty slow movers (sales-wise) and they made lots of them, so you might have a shot. Except that you've eliminated most colors... Might find a speed yellow or guards red, but those kind of flashy colors usually didn't go along with tiptronic cabs. Maybe lapis or cobalt blue? this one is a way nicer color combo (IMHO) than the Arena/Tan one linked above... http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-s...ngId=377995549

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just sold a cobalt 968. I love the color. Price seems a bit dear in comparison to the red. A lot closer though. maybe he'll take 8k off.

POST 7Original post

The Hartford one looks pretty nice! Make sure you get a PPI done. You've limited yourself with "requirements" but don't rush...you will regret it in the long run. Plenty of 996s out there that are exactly what your looking for.

That unmolested car looks a real nice one. I would go for it before you are gazumped.

POST 9Original post

Such a fun hunt, I sort of miss the process. With todays internet, I was getting three or four emails a day with cars that were newly listed consistent with my choice of exterior and interior color. Take your time, enjoy the journey.

POST 10Original post

I searched for months until I found it, and then I flew out to California to buy it and drive it home.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

OK, I'm on the car in Harford. Buddy is going to do a spot check on it today. If it passes the body/int look see, I'm gonna see about a oil filter cut and inspection. Maybe find a Durametric around the area and have the codes pulled. Also talked with an owner in VA on a car that's had a timing chain failure and lots of new bits including the IMS. It's dark blue with slate, cab blue top. There's one just like it in my town for $19k but no bearing work.

POST 13Original post

That looks like a heck of a deal. Quit fooling around with a buddy and a Durametric etc. and have a PPI done. The color looks like Texas A&M maroon and that would make it un-sell-able in this part of the country. It would only appeal to A&M alumni and collectively they could not pool $19,000.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Next possible. Really like the Aero plan here. It looks sharp on the guards red and it has auto. Mileage is a bit high, and no records from the dealer. http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-s...73580927&Log=0

POST 16Original post

Doc - I'm confused. You keep mentioning the car that is in Hartford, but I only see the listing for the car in Staten Island... those are two very different places (about 2 hours apart), but worlds apart in terms of the kind of roads / conditions the car would of been driven on. I see the car is listed on the Hartford CL (but located in Staten) - is that the hartford one you're referring to?

POST 17Original post

Also, I just bought a 1999 factory Aero, with 105k miles last week. Had full leather, LSD, Litronic, sport seats. As a reference, I paid $17k. It was a 6 speed manual by the way. Not Tip.

Yeah, I saw your thread on that. I'm thinking the red aero about the same price. No LSD, no litronic, and no sport seats, but it has full leather and some upgraded stereo. You got a heck of a deal on your car, it's fantastic. The cab is in Staten Is. I'm chatting with the seller and we're making some progress. I may be dropping into to the Apple next week.
