Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
For both cars having the car up on ramps gives me to opportunity to inspect the car for any signs of leaks from the engine, water pump, hoses and hose fittings, lines, seals, gaskets, CV boot tears, underbody panel damage (from road debris hitting and breaking these) and so on.
Leading evidence: 'Inspect car' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Inspect car' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
Go to Wal-Mart and get 2 5qt+ jugs of M1 for $45 and the filter/washer from the dealer (maybe $20) and you have a great oil change for 60-70$

So I don't need to jack the car up to change the oil...?

I'd use them to get under the engine, change oil, etc, without having to jack up the car.

Suggestion
With my Boxster and its mid-engine location I could not get the oil changed without backing the car up on ramps.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

On a side note, the oil change on 996's is very easy get at least a 10 qt drain pan (very low one if your not raising it.), new oem washer and filter and some oil (obv)...I use the M1 0w-40 that hasn't failed me in the last 8 cars I've put it in.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The ramps didn't work for the front tires, though.
What is the consensus on the best ramps to use for a 996? I'd use them to get under the engine, change oil, etc, without having to jack up the car.
And while I'd put jack stands under just in case... I'd like to buy ramps that I don't have to worry about collapsing on me.
Rhino Ramps. I just gave a set away.
Bought them years ago. Plenty secure. I put my Boxster, VW Golf TDi, GTO, Cayman S, and 996 Turbo on them more times than I could count. The Turbo tires overhung the ramps on both sides the tires are so wide.
The ramps didn't work for the front tires, though. The bumper is too low and the bumper cover extends too far from the wheels.
But I've never had to get the front end in the air like the rear where the engine and its oil and filter are.
As alpine says you don't need to drive up a ramp, jack the car up or lift it for an oil change. I have done 2 now (doing my 3rd this week) and have no issues with doing it with all 4 tires level on the ground. My car is lowered quite a bit as well.

I think with H&R lowering springs that mine is too low to do that. I bought the car with them on it, but the H&R website says they deliver a 1.5” – 1.8” drop (depending on your vehicle).
Well, I don't know about that. It depends upon your tolerance for working in a cramped area.
With my Boxster and its mid-engine location I could not get the oil changed without backing the car up on ramps.
With my Turbo while with the engine at the rear there is better access to the engine's underneath area, but the oil tank drain is located up kind of high and the oil really comes gushing out.
With the car on ramps I have more room to work so I do not get splashed with hot oil when I open the drain plug of the oil tank.
