Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

18 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello Everyone... Just sold my E46 M3 and bought a 99 Carrera 4. The car has 57k miles and still looks and drives like a new car. I love it! Last night on my way home, my car suddenly stopped and I had to pull over. I tried to start the car but the car wouldn't fire. After multiple attempts, I called my friend (his a mechanic) explained the situation and he told me I was out of fuel. Guess what? he was correct, I was out of fuel. My gas light came on about 15 local miles before the car stopped. It was one of the most embarrassing moment in my life. Below is picture of my new toy.

POST 2Original post

Great first story. Anyway, the Carrera 4 gas gauge at less then 1/4 is not really measuring fuel. It is because of the shape of the tank I think. It is using the mileage from the computer (which you may or may not be able to see based on your options) to estimate when you get to 2 gallons of gas.

Boy Oh Boy. It looks like a black stallion with its shiny armor ready for war. Ride it until it squeals.

POST 4Original post

That is a great 1st story welcome. 5 years ago during a DE at Road America my low fuel light came on in my C4. I have the trip computer so I went to see how many miles I had left on gas. My instructor said to just ignore it but on a 4 mile track the last thing you want is to run out of gas.......the read out on my dash went blank with 12 miles to go so I went for 2 more 4 mile laps.....then I got off track. It seems I've always made a game about how far I can take it while on fumes. Reminds me of the Seinfeld episode with Kramer and the Saab salesguy.

POST 6Original post

First off, congrats and welcome to the exclusive club called "Porsche 911 Ownership"...doesn't that just roll of the tongue nicely hehe. Anyways, I too came from owning an E46 M3 and owning about 8 other BMWs before I made the leap. I used to get withdrawal and sellers remorse from owing bimmers, but once you start to put mileage on the P-Car, that feeling goes away real fast and you don't look back. Enjoy!

POST 7Original post

Welcome and congratulations It looks super clean from the photo. Post a few more when you get a chance.

POST 8Original post

Congrats! Nice 996! One thing about German car manufacturers to keep in mind - they don't mess around like American car manufacturers. If the gauge says that your tank is empty, then your tank is empty. It's not like American cars that bury the needle well below "E" when you've still got 5 or 6 gallons of fuel left in the tank.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you to everyone... I'll post some pictures when I get home.

POST 11Original post

Nice ride. That's a great new owner story. I'm sure you'll never forget it, AND, now you know how far you can go after the light comes on! You'll never need to wonder!

POST 12Original post

Looks nice! Wait till you hit those corners! you will be glad you got one!!

POST 13Original post

dgjks6's comment is accurate. In order to facilitate the drive shaft, the C4 fuel tank is divided at the bottom (it's called a saddle tank). Once you get below approx. 1/3 of a tank, the computer is guessing where to show the needle and how many miles remain until empty. This means that how many miles you have left when the needle is showing a quarter tank or less can vary SIGNIFICANTLY from tank to tank. Don't mess around when it gets down to a quarter tank - and if the light comes on, find a gas station. Enjoy the car!

POST 14Original post

Nice black MY99 C4, looks like it was taken care of by PO. Great introduction on your first ride. Welcome to the Rennlist owners forum who love water.

POST 16Original post

Congrats and welcome, that gas history will never happen to you ever again!!!!!

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I think my gas gauge or sensor is broken. I drove 197 miles after filling up and my gauge is showing I still have 3/4 tank left. I'm afraid of running out of gas again. Am I tripping? Does 911 get better MPG than hybrids? I'm thinking about signing up for AAA membership.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

sorry for the crappy cell phone pictures. I will take some pictures with my DSLR over the weekend after detailing the car.
