Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

17 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

OK, since the 996 forum is the only one that gets any lively (snarky?) activity, let's play pick-my-porsche ... I've been looking for a new car for a while, haven't found anything that I could't resist at the $35K-$40K price point, so I'm bumping my budget a bit. What do you like for a $50K 911? Drivers car, not investment. Though not looking for something that will have tragic depreciation in the next 2-3 years either... Super-clean 996.2 Turbo? Low mileage 997.1 C4S? Mid-mile DFI 997.2 C2? CaymanS.2? (yes, I know it's not a 911...) I'm sure at least one person will suggest a 993... Hell, the '83 SC I sold a few years ago is closing in on that price point! But I'll keep my investments separate from my cars for now. [For the guy that bumps this thread five years from now, Fall 2014 Market!]

POST 5Original post

996 TT without a doubt. It's a fantastic bargain in a high-performance car. A friend of mine just bought an immaculate 2004 TT cabriolet for $49.9K with ~50K miles, PCCBs and X51 power kit.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

At $40K, a decent 996TT makes sense to me (though I haven't been able to find a car that meets my criteria at that price yet), but at $50K, I'm feeling like it's top of market for 996's... Well, I guess there are GT2's and GT3's. The Mezger engine is of course legendary. But it's not like the 996 (and 997) TT's are without significant failure/expense points (coolant pipes, to name one). But how are the '09+ DFI engines? I've done very little research on it, other than knowing it no longer has the problematic IMSB issue. Any wisdom on that generation engine? Key advantages of that generation that I'm considering... 3.8L S engine takes a significant bite out of the HP deficit vs. a 996 Turbo, RWD vs. AWD (yes, I consider that an advantage for what I like to do), PDK available which IMHO is awesome when combined with sport programming and paddles.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just found this cool little video... Test rig to simulate G-forces on the new 9A1 engine used in the 997.2 C2S. Same basic engine used in the 997.2 TT's, 991's, even the new 991 GT3 if i'm not mistaken. So if the 9A1 block is at or even near the same level as the Mezger, would I rather have 1 major + 1 minor generation newer body and interior, plus PDK, or an extra 60 HP (996.2TT vs. 997.2 C2S)? You Tube

POST 8Original post

With the cayman choice I assume back seats are an option so here's my pick. There's a 2004 GT3 on ebay for 49,900.

POST 9Original post

MINE. I'll sell it to you for $50k. Without a doubt that is the best way you can spend $50k for me!

POST 10Original post

You can get a brand new hundi Sonota , loaded for 24k , I would just buy two of them

POST 11Original post

If back seats are not required, GT3 all the way. Guaranteed to appreciate too due to limited production. 9A1 seems to be quite reliable barring any issues Jake discovered (he said he had I think but of course not due for disclosure yet). TT is the last true dry sump, which may matter to some people. For me, I'm intrigued by its heritage. I love the 997 style more. The regular 996s still age very well but the 996TT looks a bit dated to me, especially the rear lights.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Nobody's getting 996 GT3's for $50K... At least not one that isn't wrecked. But yes, that would be a great choice if you could. More like $60K-$70K. If looking on ebay, make sure you notice that little 'reserve not met' indication...

POST 13Original post

I'd also go for 997 C2S ... even '07 or '08 with lower miles ... I don;t think IMS issues by those years are anything to keep you awake ? If you need 4WD for snow - then you should probably be driving your jeep Turbo is nice - but interior is getting dated - other expensive failure points - but if you have to have the acceleration - sure Cayman - no rear seat - good on the track - but it's not a 911 ....

Agreed. Higher initial cost but depreciates much more slowly (can even appreciate in the future).

POST 15Original post

997.2 C2S would be my vote. As much as I like the 996tt and think they are a great value, they are getting a bit dated and the engine performance is only one aspect and not the composition of the entire car imo. If my budget was $35-40k, then 996tt no doubt. Sort of like when the '02 WRX first came out, it was ugly as heck but most people bought it for the performance at that time. '08-'09 would've been a great time to be in this situation as there were quite a bit of GT3's selling in the mid 40's.

POST 16Original post

Check out my 04 TT Cab in the classifieds. 42,000 miles and under $50k. Perfect, up top date, no stories.

It is a nice car, though the cab and tip are negatives for me... And the price is quite high IMHO. As I mentioned earlier, $50K for a 996 turbo is top-top-top of market... If it was a 25K mile coupe with X50, sport seats, a great color, then maybe for me as a buyer, $50K. I don't usually like to interfere with asking prices of others cars, but since you posted it in my $50K 911 thread, I think it's fair game!
