On the subject of the shifter, I also installed a stock 997 shifter in mine, which replaced a B&M that was installed by a prior owner.

Going to order a 997 shifter off of ebay, replace the B&M that's in there and then do the shift right kit I think.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just came over from several years of BMW ownership.

Now for the shifter question:
Is this normal?
2003 C4s Shifter Play - YouTube
Congratulations on the purchase! It's a very special car, and I think you'll find it's the best of all worlds - an amalgamation of all your previous cars. Just maybe not the trunk space...
Unfortunately, that shifter play is not unusual for a Porsche; especially when you're talking about aged and worn out components. A majority of that play is coming from the shifter unit itself. Check out the
SHIFT-RIGHT Solution
that tightens up the entire shifter mechanism with tighter tolerance aluminum components and ball bearings.
Also, you may want to have a look at your engine mounts - the sagging exhaust tips are a telltale sign that they've worn out. Replace them, and you'll be rewarded with much tighter and precise shifts.
Good luck with your newly acquired Porsche, and don't be afraid to daily drive it!
Checked my 2005 996 4S and your seems looser than what mine is. Was that in 1st gear or neutral? If 1st gear much looser. If neutral mine wants to go to the right/center under what feels like spring tension. Stock shifter in yours? Pretty sure mine is stock.
Best way to check if it's in the shifter mechanism itself is to pull the shift boot/**** off, and have a look underneath. Hold the white plastic shifter yoke with your left hand (to ensure the shifter cables aren't being moved), and wiggle the shift lever with your right hand. Any resultant play is originating from the shifter mechanism.
I'll try that. Now that you mention it, I see what you're talking about with the tips sagging. I'm ordering some parts and will add those mounts. Looked up the DIY and it seems fairly straightforward. The whole engine seems to have a lot of movement when shifting.
Thanks
Haha, after the M3 I didn't think I would buy yellow again, but I couldn't resist.
With only 35K on your car, seems like a lot of play. A friend of mine who has a Boxster with 170K has a similar amount of play.
Great looking car!
Our Cayman pulls of the yellow quite well too!
Stunning example!
I have an 04 C4S with similar play in the shifter. Just installed a 997 unit and it is a great improvement. Not too hard to do the installation - just lots and lots of hidden screws need to be removed to get the console off. Piece of cake from there. I got mine on eBay for a good price - 997 424 010 00. The green piece is to center the shifter when reconnecting the shift cables.
Also, nice M5 :-)
Great looking C4S Connor - congratulations! You'll get no guff from me. Even though only Guards Red cars get the extra 25 hp bump from the factory (most people know about that little secret even though Porsche officially denies it), Speed Yellow is right there with it. My shopping list was GR, SY, cobalt blue and then I also considered seal gray if it had a little bling added. Frankly, there are only a couple of colors I don't care for on a 996.
Also, thanks for sharing the pics of your previous rides. That was a sweet little black/dark purple Boxster you had there.
Go with the Function First solution or replace the entire shifter with a 997 unit.
I've used the B&M and the 997 - the 997 unit stuck. Also look at some of the solid linkages while you're in there.
Congrats!
The 997 shifter won't do anything to minimize the shifter play - the internal mechanisms are identical to the earlier 996 units. The only difference is the 997 shifter shortens shifter throw by 15% - so it's a nice compromise if you're looking for a shorter shifter throw, but the 35% reduction of the OEM and aftermarket shifters is too short for your liking.
(shorter shift throw = more shift effort)
The
SHIFT-RIGHT Solution
is compatible with either the 996 or the 997 units. Check out this full write-up I recently posted comparing OEM vs Cup vs SHIFT-RIGHT upgraded shifters:

sweet yellow!
I just did a 997 shifter swap, got it off ebay for $150. The 15% shorter throw is perfect as I didn't like the farther forward reach for third and 5th with the stock 996. If you don't like it, easy to put it back to stock, verses destroying your OEM shifter bushing to do the B&M short shifter.
The green neutral rigging tool is cheap, hunt around you can get them for $6-8, don't pay the $20 off of ebay other. eay way to make sure your cables are adjusted perfectly.
Great Pictorial DIY here, from a 997 but it's very very very similar on the 996.

Thanks! I miss my miata. Considering building a Exocet as a track car. Check them out.
Thanks for all the suggestions. Going to order a 997 shifter off of ebay, replace the B&M that's in there and then do the shift right kit I think.
Just to clarify, in case you liked the current shifter throw lengths with the B&M, the SHIFT-RIGHT is compatible with that (and other) short shift kits.
Hard to comment about the shifter since I put a B&M short shift kit in my '02.
Not sure about the color of the car and the red "S" - I've got the same!!
Looks great. Enjoy. I'm enjoying mine! (trying to rotate the photo, having some problems!)
Nice pic. I have driven my C4S in light snow a few times, but nothing like that.
On the subject of the shifter, I also installed a stock 997 shifter in mine, which replaced a B&M that was installed by a prior owner. In a colder climate I found the short shifter to be too notchy when cold. The 997 shifter has been much better for me with decently short throws and much greater smoothness in all temperatures.
