Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

OK, I have acquired a set of 997TT rims and tires. While I like them as is I am considering going with either having them PlastiDipped or powder coated. I talked to the PlastiDip place and apparently this is a spray coating rather than a dip process. They said to just bring the wheels in with tires mounted and they will spray them. It is fairly inexpensive at $300 but my question is, how durable is this coating? I know it is a peel off, but can you get new tires mounted after they are coated without messing up the lips? The other option I am considering is a titanium color powder coat.

POST 2Original post

Just do it yourself. You can leave the wheels on the car and just run a plastic bag inside the spokes to prevent overspray. You can spray the tires with a special liquid so the excess peels right off. I know Jeep people who have two years of off-roading with it on. This company has a great video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFYX_5cS1go

POST 3Original post

Yeah, DIY it. You can get the cans from Home Depot/Lowes and there are a ton of videos showing how. I can't speak to rims, but it did the tailpipes on my Cayenne (they are shrouded so the painted area never gets hot) and its held up far better than I expected. It's been over a year now and they still look good. One caveat for me though is that I never wash my cars so I don't how well it would stand up to aggressive washing (as may be normal on tailpipes or wheels) since you can peel it off.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Cool, thanks for the video. My concern is that when I go to get new tires that the edges will peel off when they are mounting the tires. I think that powder coating is more permanent but I have th same concerns regarding the rim lips getting stripped when they mount the tires.

POST 5Original post

I have Plasti Dipped several sets of wheels. They are no way near as durable as powder-coating, but the process isn't nearly as involved, expensive or permanent. They are able to be touched up with a quick spray if they get nicked, which they do. I am having new tires mounted on my track wheels that were "dip'd" last spring. I will report back if the mounting process scuffs them.

POST 6Original post

I have used plastidip on almost all my vehicles for the last 10 years. Depending on application and prep it can be very durable. But will need to be redone each time new tires are installed. Or touched up at minimum. Mine are plastidipped with "glossifier" overtop. And have been done like this for a year.

POST 7Original post

I dipped the winter wheels on my wife's car. They survive automatic washes and Minnesota road salt just fine. It is very easy to do yourself and easy to touch up if they get nicked.

POST 9Original post

Just be careful. I heard the heat from driving hard etc hardens the plastic dip and it becomes an issue if you ever want to get it off. Anyone ever had experience with that issue?

POST 10Original post

Whatever you do, don't pick black for the colour.

POST 11Original post

Yes you can. I've had mine dipped for two years and have had new tires mounted. If you have a tear you easily repair it. I wouldn't pay someone to do it. It's an easy diy. When I did it I took my wheels off. photo267.jpg No need to mask it peels right off your tires.

POST 12Original post

You can also just get a deck of playing cards and stuck them between the wheel and tire and create an easy "tape job"

POST 13Original post

Okay, here's the update. Mounting the new tires dinged the Plasti Dip pretty good. It is easy to touch up, but it will definitely be required. The wheels in question have only been used for Auto-X and Track Days. No problem peeling the wheel clean, even with excessive heat.

POST 14Original post

If you keep the original finish on the outside lip or have that area professionally finished as in the attached photos of a set we recently completed then you can use plastic-dip, rattle can or any other solutions of your choice so you wont have to touch up the edge when new tires are mounted or dismounted. For the record this wheel was fully refinished in a Satin Black center, outside edge and barrels were brush-polished and clear coated in Gloss finish. By they way they will be put for sale....

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Now those are some pretty wheels. Get new to me rims and then all these other options pop up. Sigh.

POST 16Original post

I've found plastidip to be very durable. When doing wheels, I take the wheels off the car, lay down on a piece of cardboard and spray. Unlike paint, I don't use index cards to prevent the plastidip from getting on the tires. Once it's dry, you can either peel the overspray off the tires, or leave it and the overspray will eventually flake off.
