I also had a small RMS leak, so they replaced the RMS, AOS, and vent thing.

I recommend replace both the AOS and that valve, especially if the AOS is original.

I also recommend replacing all the o-rings (internal) on the corrugated AOS hoses (4 o-rings total) and the o-ring on that breather valve if it doesn't come with the valve.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just noticed oil leaking down the Rt rear corner of the engine case on 1999 996 C-2. At first I thought it may be spark plug tube but the oil appears to coming from above that area. Does anyone know if there is a sensor that may be in that area that may have a leaking ring or seal? I haven't pulled anything apart yet, just wondering if someone knows what I may be in for.

POST 2Original post

There's an AOS breather connector that could sweat/leak at the right rear corner of the engine (rear = toward the exhaust). Just look under the a/c compressor. There's an oil pressure sender at the right front of the engine. Look at the right intake manifold runners deep inside the engine bay.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Don't think it's the cam seal, oil coming down from above seal. There is a breather hose that comes from the AOS which ends up right over right rear corner of the engine with a small screen or air filter like adapter at the end of the pipe. Any chance oil could be coming from the AOS unit and out that tube. If so, would the failure be the adapter at the end of the tube or failed AOS?

POST 5Original post

There is a breather valve here B22B1FC3-3125-4765-807D-D995A62C59A8.jpg 533BDB03-BE5F-4595-A15A-FD4C55412272.jpg 91F4AC59-23B8-4156-8AD2-97497FC947E4.jpg Had it happen to me. Was a bad AOS (which was less than a year old) that caused oil to come out the valve. Dealer replaced the AOS and valve

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah, I am pretty certain is coming from the breather pipe that comes from the AOS. Thanks for posting photos, the oil I see is in the same area and the small breather valve is wet from oil. Did the replacement of the AOS stop the oil leak and do you know if the breather pipe was replaced?

POST 7Original post

I also had a small RMS leak, so they replaced the RMS, AOS, and vent thing. Cost was $2000. I can't remember for sure, but they may have had to drop the engine to get to the valve. And yes, put 25,000 miles on after and it solved all the problems.

POST 8Original post

I recommend replace both the AOS and that valve, especially if the AOS is original. The AOS will not be too bad as yours a Mk I but that breather valve will be a bit of a pain to replace. I also recommend replacing all the o-rings (internal) on the corrugated AOS hoses (4 o-rings total) and the o-ring on that breather valve if it doesn't come with the valve.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys, I have the trans out to inspect the IMS Brg (has the latter non serviceable Brg) and replace the clutch. Not sure but it looks like I can access the AOS from underneath with the trans out without Pulling everything apart up top. I will take your advice and replace orings and breather hose. I may have to pull manifolds anyway to replace the breather hose. Any additional tips would be helpful.

POST 10Original post

Even with the trans out, most ppl also needed to work from the above (with left intake manifod removed) as well to remove the AOS. Lower the engine as much as it can go will help quite a bit.
