Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I had Dynatech Longtubes, Custom midpipes, high flow cats and used the Lightning spec Bassani cat back.

Ford used an auto 'cause I seem to remember it had no manual that could take the torque.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I need a truck and want something a little different and fun (and cheap). Figured I'd ask to see if any of you guys have owned one and what you thought of it. I don't want to ask on a ford forum because it'll be a little biased I'm afraid. Looking towards a 99-04 Supercharged version.
Thanks in advance.

Extremely quick. Tough to get traction, rolling starts tend to help. Neighbour had one. Complained a lot about the spark plugs seeming welding themselves to the heads.
Yeah the later 5.4's have that issue with the plugs. Plus they're a really weird long two piece plug, so about one out of 5 will break off and drop in the cylinder... that's a real hoot trying to get it out. They make a special tool for it which luckily the shop I work at has.
Need a truck. I do too much construction work to not have a truck. Don't care much for trying to stack wood in the wife's Cayenne. Anything Saleen is probably going to be too much anyway. Trying to stay under $10k.
Looked into buying a Ford Lightning when they first came out or shortly after. Spotted a real nice looking one down in Needles CA at the Ford dealer when I had my Mustang in for something I forget now what. (I was on my way back east on a road trip.)
IIRC from my research not much payload capacity. Not much towing capacity either. A real gas hog. 13mpg I what I recall and given how much I drive I couldn't justify buying a vehicle that only got 13mpg.
The supercharger belt had a rep for slipping.
No manual tranny option. Ford used an auto 'cause I seem to remember it had no manual that could take the torque.
For a truck, though, the Lightning sure looked cool. I see them around every once in a (great) while. I still like the looks.
I had bought a new red '99 back in the day. Had a great time with that truck, put a new exhaust system (Bassani I think), superchip and other goodies on it. Did a Ford SVT event at Waterford Hills Raceway here in Michigan with it, that was kind of wild driving the truck like that on the track. Sold it after a couple years and maybe 25K miles, I still miss it every time I see one on the road.
had an 01, got it as a toy and was a blast to drive. nice to suprise ricers get whipped by a truck.
also good for hauling stuff and can tow if needed. handed it down to my daughtet until she decided to get a more practical car (horrible gas mileage, tough to park in the crowded streets of San Diego and LA)
I had a 2002 F150 Harley. Lots of mods. Dyno'd at 397hp/531tq. Most fun vehicle I ever owned. I sold it in 2011. My wife thinks I'm nuts, but I want another.
If you can bump up to $20k, go for an SRT10.
Otherwise, find a GM truck with a 6.0 (or 6.2), long tubes, intake and a tune. Or you could really have fun and supercharge it. Would kill a Lightning, be more comfortable, more usable, etc.
I had two both new I bought an 02 when they finally were available at employee pricing (My brother in law ). I did a round the US 33 state trip ,route 66 etc and traded it with 16000 mi on it for a new 03. (traded for $500 less than I paid 6 or 7 month earlier for one yr newer new tires etc.)
The towing capacity is 5000 lb rated low because the truck is a short wheelbase with soft rear springs More than enough to tow a car trailer.Plenty of power ,brakes and cooling. Bed load ability was low like 1200 lb for the 02 ,upped to 1800 I think for the 03. sold the 03 when I decided I was tired of driving an expensive super truck in the summer and a junker in the winter.
I was also afraid of massive depreciation and expensive repairs as I piled miles on but they seem to have held up well .
gas mileage about 9mpg premium ,expensive tires at the time .Never any repairs on either of mine but I sold both with less than 50,000 mi. Seat upholstery on the drivers side seems to wear fast from frequent in and out. Miss that truck everytime I see one
I have a 2012 F150 4x4 with the 360 hp Coyote 5.0 Nothing like it but better mileage (16 ) and year round. You could easily add a lot of power to a Lightning with simple blower pulley changes and a chip but I never bothered stock 12-13 sec 1/4 is more than fast enough
Because long tube headers is a very 70's way of thinking, and is at the bottom of the list, if it even makes the list when talking about freeing up or making power on the LS platform. (Besides changing just the exhaust manifolds are really not going to do anything for you)
I had Dynatech Longtubes, Custom midpipes, high flow cats and used the Lightning spec Bassani cat back. The truck sounded awesome. I had a sticker in the back window that said "Loud pipes save lives".
Well, White Out stuffed an LS into the back of a 996 - i.e. he has actually produced something interesting - whereas your contributions consist primarily of what you think are "Oh, SNAP!" zingers but are in fact just the ramblings of a poorly-informed non-member.
So, I guess my point is: If you're going to call out someone else for suggesting backward-thinking, useless modifications, establishing even the slightest trace of credibility might be a good idea.
As far as long-tubes being useless - the Exotic Muscle long-tubes I had on my '96 C4 made a significant difference, but they also made the car impossible to smog at the new-and-improved "STAR" stations we have in CA, so they had to come off after two years.
