I thought the smog pump was used only prior to / to assist the catalyst reaching proper operating temperature.
Leading evidence: 'Use only prior' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Run other than first start in the am' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
I do not know that I have ever heard it running other than first start in the am when the car is cold.

Suggestion
The DME turns it on briefly, then it reads the O2 sensor to see if extra oxygen is detected...for testing the overall SAI operation.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Schnell, I am still not concerned but you mention this pump (assuming it is) shouldn't kick in during operation.
Hello all. I've had the car for three years but this is the first time I have thought about asking. Regardless of outside air temperature I get a 3-5 second sound of what can be best described as a jet airplane (just not as loud) when stopped. A sound you can easily hear with the radio off but would be a challenge to hear if the radio is on. I don't have any alarming symptoms of a problem and not worried about the sound, just curious what it may be. Thanks.
It wounds like a fan is kicking on, but you're going to have to do some sleuthing to figure out if it's a radiator fan (front of the car, left or right fender), the engine compartment evac fan (the one bolted to the underside of the rear trunk lid, or maybe the smog pump (left side of the engine bay as you're looking at the engine from behind). A video showing where it's from and including the sound would be monumentally helpful.
Smog pump should not be firing up when OP stops the car - and it stays on for longer than 3-5 seconds - but OP's explanation of when this happens is sketchy at best.
I have it too. My indy knows for sure what it is and it is of no concern unless it stops turning on. At start up it fires up for 1-2 minutes only then stops. 5Schn3ll would know better than I. My indy said it was only for emissions and stays on for only a minute or so at startup. 5Schn3ll is that the Smog Fan? Whiney little high pitch jet sound. I could go take a photo but I believe its on left when you open trunk. My Indy put a stethoscope on it and said it was definitely the fan.
Yeah, Cheeky, it's the secondary air injection fan (smog pump). What you're describing is normal operation. Mine runs in the morning at first start when the car is cold...
Thank you all for the responses.
I should have been a little more descriptive initially.......it is the same sound when you initially start the car. (and coming from the engine compartment). I notice the sound re-occur when I stop at a light or get hung up in traffic and the car is stopped. I will keep an ear on it to see if it happens EVERY time I stop which I can't say with confidence it does. And I will revise the duration closer to 2-3 seconds; it does not stay on for very long and again it is very faint.
Schnell, I am still not concerned but you mention this pump (assuming it is) shouldn't kick in during operation. Perhaps it is a symptom of the pump going bad??
My guess is the sound is coming from the stock built-in IMSB failure sensor.....kidding of course
That's the SAI pump. It's normal for it to come on briefly when stopped at the light. The DME turns it on briefly, then it reads the O2 sensor to see if extra oxygen is detected...for testing the overall SAI operation.
Really? Dang, learn something daily. I thought the smog pump was used only prior to / to assist the catalyst reaching proper operating temperature. I do not know that I have ever heard it running other than first start in the am when the car is cold.
Yes, I've read factory documents describing that. It makes sense because during cold start, it takes the DME about one minute to detect and conclude the SAI system is working properly (takes time for the O2 sensor to heat up so they could detect the injected oxygen). If the user starts driving right away, that would disrupt the test. So later on when the car is idling at a stop, the DME triggers the SAI pump to do the test again. This time though it takes only a few seconds because all the O2 sensors are hot and ready.
