When the Indy did the cooltant tank and fuel pump, he cleaned the hell out of the area.

Suggestion
The factory thermostat for the 996 starts to open at around 187F and fully opens at about 210F To get a really good clean job on the condenser and radiators is a bumper off job.

Suggestion
Overcooling is a thing, but thatll realistically only happen if you decide to run the car without a thermostat, which determines the minimum operating temperature of your engine.

And the temp sensor goes to 180 and tad over, especially when its been run on the streets and heading to places for 40+ minutes.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Ive had my 2004 Targa for a year now and its never done a out of town trip from Phx for over an hr. Its just a daily driver around the Phx area, streets, freeways, etc. And the temp sensor goes to 180 and tad over, especially when its been run on the streets and heading to places for 40+ minutes. Ive never had an issue with overheating or warning temp lights coming on. The Targa just takes the 100+ degree weather with no issues.
Last night I made a run to Casa Grande which was about an 1 and 15 minutes away from with the AC on Temps were around 90 degrees outside and the temp sensor was at 180 and a very minute tad over. It stayed like that for my whole trip.
I noticed it because it didnt do the normal thing of being at 180 and a tad over and noticeable.
This morning on my way back to Phx, it did the same thing with the AC off and temps were around 82 degrees, that is were the needle stayed on? Just like my Trip down to Casa Grande with the Ac
I than Turned the AC on and this is were the needle was when I got to Phx, about an hour into the trip. The needle didnt even move that much?
The engine is running perfectly no weird noises, etc Is this proper cooling for the 996.2? I expected to see that needle more to the right?
I like see those 18.5MPG vs my 16MPG on street, the trip was fun going and coming back
Your radiators have good airflow at speeds above 60mph, allowing your car to cool better. Plus, turning on the AC does kick the fans on, so youre getting a double-benefit.
Youre likely to overheat while sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic, extended stop lights, and other situations with poor radiator airflow.
Do you have a low-temperature thermostat installed?
Thanks for the insight, yeah maybe I was thinking over cooling a bad thing. But yes stop and go traffic that needle will over past the 180 but never any overheating issues.
I am unsure if I have the low temp stat.....New clutch will needed soon, at that time things will get addressed, IMS, RMS, Clutch, Water Pump, etc
Overcooling is a thing, but thatll realistically only happen if you decide to run the car without a thermostat, which determines the minimum operating temperature of your engine. Its not going to happen with a low-temperature thermostat, especially in Arizona.
Id look into installing the LN engineering low-temp thermostat the next time you get your water pump replaced. The replacement itself is easy, but its the filling and bleeding of the coolant that is a hassle.
Just had the coolant tank replaced so it was rebleed, Indy didnt ask if I wanted to do water pump at the time. Thats why I am waiting to get to the major stuff so the re-bleed isnt wasted since I am having zero issues with the engine.
I would make sure that your radiators are clean. Depending on when was the last time you cleaned them and how, it might be a good idea to give it another go but this time use a tire brush and some water, ideally a power washer. When I did this, separating the AC condenser from the radiator on a relatively clean looking one, I was quote surprised at what came out. Besides leaves and branches, dirt, dust and tiny rocks and insects end up embedding themselves in between the radiator fins and end up reducing the efficiency of the radiators. I do this once a year and my needle typically sits right at 180 when at highway speeds.
The normal water temperature for a Porsche 996 is between 185F and 230F.
The factory thermostat for the 996 starts to open at around 187F and fully opens at about 210F To get a really good clean job on the condenser and radiators is a bumper off job. I don't think you have any major issues.
When the Indy did the cooltant tank and fuel pump, he cleaned the hell out of the area. Some leaves, debris came out. Said it was pretty clean. I also ran it with a power washer about 2 months ago knowing that area is probe to debris getting in there.
Having had an air cooled 3.0 SC, I know that is more prone to overheating in Az. Ask me how I know
So with the 996 I question everything with the Temp sensor, when I am unsure to a group that has the best knoweledge
Hello fellow Phoenix area 996 owner. I'm a little confused by your wording- basically you are asking if it's normal for the temp gauge to sit in between the "8" and "0" after cruising on the highway at approx 80-90 degree ambient temp? That's pretty normal for my car. Generally I will start seeing it spend more time at or just above the "0" once ambient temps are near 100. Highway speeds and low RPMs keep things cooler. The car's water temperature does seem to fluctuate with ambient temps but mine drives fine even above 110, with the temp staying just at or beyond the "0" during those conditions. Keep in mind all modern cars experience temperature variation, but the 996 has a real temperature gauge, unlike most cars made after the 90s which have a huge dead zone around normal operating temps. This means most cars of this era will keep the needle on center as long as temp is somewhere in the operating range, making the gauge more like a warning light than an actual measuring device. The fact that the 996's gauge registers actual temp fluctuations is one of the cool old school/analog things I like about the car. Also, this last week has seen the temperature return back towards normal fall temperatures for our region. While my 996 drives great even in very hot temps, I have noticed a difference this week in my more temperature-sensitive E46 BMW, which is driving very nicely during these cooler mornings and evenings. So it's no surprise that your 996 is giving you information about this real difference in ambient conditions.
Last 4th of July (weekend after it), I had to drive back to San Jose from Chandler, AZ. It was in the teens (113 ish) leaving AZ, and until I hit traffic outside LA, or in the mountains north of LA, the temperature was parked where you show it between the 8 and 0. I do this run roundtrip 3 times a year in my 04 base 996.2. AC is nice and cold.......... in traffic, or up the mountains, the temperature gauge moves to the right side of the 0. Sounds like you have nothing to worry about......
