POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all Im looking at what modifications (oem+) I can do to my 2000 996 C2 3.4 to help with any oil pick up issues when driving around twisty mountain roads for fun. I saw the EBS racing baffled sump insert for the stock sump which seems like it would help a lot with any oil starvation. What else could I do? What about oil spec? Its a daily driver and commuter also so mild mods would be best. Look forward to your suggestions Thanks

POST 2Original post

I added a 1/2 qt sump extender from LNE and the turbo baffles which helped a lot. Porschetech3 has a new design sump that appears to be amazing, long thread on here about it. Oil? For sure, keep oil in the engine, will last longer.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Could you share links to the extender and the turbo baffles please? sorry I meant the spec/weight of oil. Ive edited the original post thanks

POST 4Original post

Couple of items. 1. UAOS with Track Drain. Oil is processed better and drains directly to sump not cylinders and exhaust. Mitigates risk of smoking and hydralock. Coolant lines do not run thru the UAOS so eliminates intermix issues. Can process more oil quantity in engine so you can run 1qt over full, and if you get a favorable "blow by" test, you may be able to run 2 qts over full. This helps to solve for oil pressure stability and starvation. 2. 2 quart deep sump w/x51 baffle or the UIDS if you need a heavy duty fix. 3. Make sure your radiators are clean and your cooling system is functioning in top form including making sure your water pump is less than 5 years old to mitigate the risk of a blade breaking off and getting lodged in your heads which can result in cracking and intermix. If you want more cooling you can always add a 3rd radiator and the 997S 3.8 oil cooler. But both may be overkill for the street. 4. High viscosity, higher weight oil with lots of moly to improve oil pressure and lubrication at high rpms and temps. Enjoy!

POST 5Original post

I agree with the previous posts and will add these: Manually switch your high-speed radiator fans on all the time. If your average speed in the twisties is below 60 mph, you wont get enough airflow to cool the coolant as much as possible. If youre going to get a sump extension, keep your car at stock height, and even switch to stiffer springs. You dont want to crack your sump open on a bump, especially out in the middle of nowhere. Use tires with bad grip. I like my 560tw all-seasons. Maybe come summertime, you can swap your coolant for distilled water + water wetter. Dont travel to freezing temps with this though, youll freeze the water and cause a major headache.

POST 6Original post

Hah! Yep, it does hang down a bit. All you gotta do is remember it's there and you will be OK. Funny thing is I never hit it on the street or track and I like to use the whole track. But I did scrape it backing up at very slow speed a few months ago on my buddys funny shaped driveway at night. Didnt see the bubble that had formed. It's been on the car for 15 years and has done its job extremely well without any problems. I plan on replacing it with the UIDS for more even more starvation protection one of these days soon. It will give me quite a bit more clearance as well.

Wow what kind and how much sealant was used? Never seen anything like that.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for your replies! Ive been looking at the EBS racing baffle on the on engineering site for the stock sump. Will this give some kind of protection or is it not worth it on its own? what weight oil does everyone recommend then? 5w50? Cooling wise the temperature has been pretty stable when up in the mountains even on hotter days so fingers crossed the rads etc are doing the job is the UAOS to be able to hold more oil as well as quickly returning it back to the sump? many thanks all!

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 19697551

Hah! No idea. Looks like they were running a sale on sealant and my indy took advantage of it. My indy actually put it together for me back in the mid 2000s when 2qt sumps were not yet being manufactured and sold by todays providers. They contacted the Grand Am teams that raced the M96 and asked them what they did to control AOS failure, oil pressure instability and starvation. I believe, but I may be wrong, that the 2 qt extension came from one of their racing suppliers before they were actively sold to the public. Don't remember which one. Long time ago. My indy did fabricate the aluminum guard. They were pretty fired up about it because air can flow through it for cooling. I never had a cooling issue on the track running just 2 radiators with one exception when I ran a double session at Road America and water temps were pushing 250. I then exited the track. I gotta say the whole package has worked extremely well over the years. But I will be moving to the UIDS one of these days for industrial starvation strength.

POST 10Original post

Youre gonna love the UIDS. I took a banked freeway on-ramp with it installed and the oil pressure remained high. Edit: Im now taking as many banked turns as I can

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 19697566

The UAOS Track doesn't hold more oil, instead its able to processes more oil and return it directly to the sump. So, think about this for a second. You put 8.5 qts of oil in your 996 and the oem AOS can't process it under higher Gs, so the Porsche factory tells you to run a half quart down in oil quantity so it doesnt smoke. Not an optimal suggestion if you are worried about oil starvation and oil pressure stability. However, I am able to run 12 qts of oil in my 996. 2 extra qts over full with a deep sump, and another 1.5 qts over full with the UAOS Track. So I am running ~3.5+ qts over full. The M96 loves great oil. But more importantly, it loves lots and lots of oil quantity to stabilize oil pressures and mitigate starvation. Here is the kicker, the UAOS Track is the key ingredient since it's able to process the all of the extra oil (12 qts total). The oem AOS would fail asap. The Porsche Motorsports AOS can handle the 2qts extra oil from deep sump, but it can't handle the additional 1.5 qts on top of it. But the UAOS Track can. Which is why I replaced my Porsche Motorsports AOS with the UAOS Track.

POST 12Original post

Sorry about the answer i gave you about oil, i knew what you meant. Just that you can start religious wars on here asking about oil brands. The answer GC996 gave you is appropriate, and find a good brand like Liquid Moly, Driven, Motul, etc. Those are among the more popular oils. 5W40 is what your car needs in most situations. I have the 1/2 qt sump from LNE and since my car is lowered with the M030 suspension i also have a skid plate below the engine. It doesn't hang down as low as GC996's sump, it's about the thickness of the existing sump so results in double the thickness. You can just google LN Engineering and you'll find their web site and all the nice stuff they sell. The turbo baffles help. The UIDS may be the ultimate solution, there a long thead on hear about that. The UAOS is a replacement kit for the existing AOS (air-oil separator) which has been known to fail and destroy engines if not caught quickly enough. Big thread on the site about that. Normally the AOS should be replaced every 3-5 years, depending on driving conditions. You can add the UAOS then, or now, depends on how you feel your car has been maintained before you bought it. It doesn't add any more oil capacity to the system, just prevents a potential problem. I would also consider an IMS bearing inspection and possible replacement, done when the clutch is replaced. Failure rates are very low but failure can destroy an engine. Search IMS bearing threads. Hope you are having fun on your twisties! We have some great one here that i try to drive weekly.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Appreciate everyone’s help! So the baffle kit for the stock sump would not be worth the purchase on its own unless I got for the extra capacity extender aswell? How can I test to see my current AOS is working as it should? @az968gpw are the turbo baffles your referring to from the 996 turbo? Where can I get these from? Thank you all!

POST 14Original post

Have you ever dropped the sump? I did it for the first time last weekend and was surprised to find out my 996 has a baffle already installed it looked like this https://www.ebay.com/itm/115564233393 maybe you already have a baffle installed, too.

POST 15Original post

That ebay link shows the stock baffle that is in every 996. It is not the baffle out of a turbo that is special, it is the baffle that was part of the X51 option (power hike from factory by ~20hp), that is different. See here https://986forum.com/forums/boxster-...pacer-kit.html Porsche and LN engineering sell it but so do many others. Do a search for a post by Porschetech3 regarding AOS check.

POST 16Original post

Here is a link to the LN 2qt deep sump w/ the X51 baffle and pickup tube extension. As @hardtailer mentioned, the black plastic baffle is not an upgrade. Its what every 996 came with from the factory. https://lnengineering.com/2qt-deep-s...51-baffle.html
