I was running a bunch of 997 maps and 997 injectors, but wanted more flexibility over fuel tuning, so I used a MaxxECU inside the existing me7.8 case, sharing the crank and cam sensors with the original ECU, and reading in most other parameters over the existing factory canbus from the dme/abs etc (along with 2x CAN wideband o2 sensors).

It opens a lot of doors - I may also do exhaust valve and spoiler control at a later date - having maxxecu read in rpm, gear, speed, oil pressure, temps etc all over CAN gives me lots of flexibility over control logic, I could also use it to control electric PAS pumps and water pumps over CAN, or use its configurable launch control and traction control.

Off the back of the RoW flash thread, thought I'd share my MaxxECU setup for my 3.9 996 (with schrick cams, x51 bits etc). I was running a bunch of 997 maps and 997 injectors, but wanted more flexibility over fuel tuning, so I used a MaxxECU inside the existing me7.8 case, sharing the crank and cam sensors with the original ECU, and reading in most other parameters over the existing factory canbus from the dme/abs etc (along with 2x CAN wideband o2 sensors). This gives me the best of both - I get the original dme doing what I want it to (sparks, variocam, e-throttle) and maxx doing fuel, it also integrates like factory, the original dme throws no fault codes, can be read with porsche tools as normal and the vehicle data/operating hours and overrevs etc all read as usual, and all the factory bits like cruise control and mpg reading (with the consumption parameter set to match the 997 injectors) etc all work. I've also not had to cut any of the original loom other than the 6 injector outputs which can be switched between the original ECU and MaxxEcu on a connector allowing me to choose which ecu to run. This setup gives me:
-on-the-fly tuning of all fuelling parameters
-Wideband o2 feedback and ability to target AFRs at all load sites
-A much more granular load- and rpm-based fuel adaptation to a target AFR
-Flexible rev limiters (I do an oil temp based fuel limiter)
-can remove the MAF and use MAP - but i currently elect to use MAF
-awesome logging capabilities (I bring in wheel speed to give me gear and speed, engine pressures, temps, obviously have cam angle, have brought in the ventilhub state too so can log just about everything)
-ability to use tools like realdash on my head unit, could go to digital dash no problem
and a lot more I've probably forgotten, but ultimately is just a bit more flexible to tune. This is an awesome resource, I hope the 996 community can see the value in the dual standalone/factory ECU approach you’ve taken, huge capability leap. Well done.
