Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suspension refresh + lowering to fill the wheel wells better (going with either Koni Sport Yellow + H&R or H&R street perf coilover kit; also thinking of doing the bushings)
Leading evidence: 'Install koni actives' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). It's easy to forget these little wear and tear items and instead focus on the bolt on performance parts, but after 20 years they need to be replaced typically.

Shifter - FunctionFirst **** + replacing plastic bushings w/ the metal kit
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

If you are using for a DD and want some whaling from your flat 6 when you are more than 50% throttle position, Tubi Style and Cargraphic are a couple you might want to sample.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Finally ready to make upgrades to my 2002 C2 996 (6-sp manual).
Mostly for spirited daily driving vs. track duty. This is mostly my "dd", but I work remotely, so it's mostly for spirited driving on the grocery runs and morning coffee's here and there. What else would you recommend in the bucket of "tasteful" mods, while retaining OEM-ish characteristics?
Here's what I was thinking after reading the forums. What might you suggest I add to this growing list?
1. New set of APEX wheels (GT3 specs width and tires) - done
2. Suspension refresh + lowering to fill the wheel wells better (going with either Koni Sport Yellow + H&R or H&R street perf coilover kit; also thinking of doing the bushings)
3. Brake calipers black (CC chipping off) >> red (thinking of doing this myself actually)
4. Shifter - FunctionFirst **** + replacing plastic bushings w/ the metal kit
5. Fister Exhaust
+1 on the Fister exhaust.
Sounds great without being too loud and no drone on the highway.
The Function-First shift right kit does help to remove the sloppiness of the oem unit.
I like mine but I installed it on a new 997 shifter so Im not sure how well it works on an older worn out one.
All good mods to enhance the handling and driving experience. i would also recommend replacing the tie rods, sway bar links and control arms if in the budget. These small parts incrementally improve the tightness of the handling. If you're going to replace the shift mechanism, you might want to also replace the transmission bushing as that will get rid of a lot of the slop. It's easy to forget these little wear and tear items and instead focus on the bolt on performance parts, but after 20 years they need to be replaced typically. I just did all that work and more to my '02 Carrera and the difference is night and day.
Update: Pilgrimage out to Brentwood to get the Fister mod by the maestro Darin Fister himself at FD Motorsports. The audio on the attached video does not quite do the justice. It's *just* the right amount of throatiness and gurgle I was going for. It makes it 10x better on the drives w/ the windows down and makes me eager to hop into the car that much more. Thank you all for the unanimous suggestion to go w/ the fister exhaust!
Something funny: Before I left, Darin told me it might get "smoky" from the fresh paint on the exhausts and that it would be temporary. Strangely, it's smelled "sweeter" after idling the car. Haha, not sure if it's supposed to do that.
Darin backing the car out after he completing the installation himself
That sounds way different than any other Fister video I've heard - more high pitched, almost like a bike engine. Are there different versions of the mod?
For your usage I would definitely go for the H&R springs combined with KONI actives instead of yellow sports.
The H&R Street performance coil-over would be my 3rd choice as it is harsher on expansion joints and the like for a given spring rate since it is a monotube (high) gas pressure damper, whereas the KONIs are twin tube (low) gas pressure.

Haha interesting take. You know I think it might have been how much he revved it maybe? I do remember he revved it high in that moment right there in the video. the gurgle is def more pronounced in the lower gears for sure and at 1-3000 RPM. Definitely more bass than with the stock
Super helpful! Never thought to consider how much harsher it would be on monotubes vs. not. What are your thoughts on the H&R + KONI actives vs. KW V1?
I'd go for the h&r + koni actives as the valve inside the active sets it apart and broadens the range of being able to absorb impacts on one (high) end of the (frequency) spectrum whilst controlling body motion on the other (low frequency) end.
So you can have your cake and eat it so to speak.
@hardtailer
Quick gutcheck. How would you think through the below?
Ohlins R&T coilover setup at $6.4K installed vs. Koni Sports Actives as you mentioned + Eibach springs (1in lower) installed $3.9K?
I have a feeling at some point I might have wanted the adjustability anyways, but $2500 extra is hefty for now - $2500 buys me a whole lot of other stuff
I'm worried in the event KONI + Eibach doesn't work out, I'm left with less options / less of a recourse than with the more adjustable and maybe more "resellable" Ohlins?
With either one, I think I'm gonna have a win here over the current stock set up as you mentioned
I would still choose the KONIs with either Eibach or H&R springs as the hlins are also (like H&R) monotube dampers, so the above applies to them too, even though they have the DFV.
Choosing between Eibach or H&R is a matter of preference regarding lowering. You probably won't find spring rates published for them, but lower will always be stiffer not least because the bump stops come into action at smaller shock absorber strokes than when lowered less.
Comparing number of coils (more=lower stiffness) and wire diameter (more=higher stiffness) allows a direct comparison of two different springs for the same vehicle and axle.
HTH.
There are a lot of YouTube videos with various exhausts.

My experience with Feal 441+ was all good. But combined with new arms both front and back. GT3 replica front sway bar. Adjustible toe arms and more+++.
Incorrectly spec'd hardware (rubbed the shock towers on a Focus RS, I had to find smaller nuts), pillow ***** developed a knock within 10k miles, damper valving is just not great as you can't get a good compromise between bump handling and body control if the track has more than a few kinds of corners, and one snapped shaft. Is that enough for you?
