Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

it kinda checked all the boxes for me, color model, mileage, etc.

The Indy doing the work said he has seen many instances of dealer installed LN not registered or with stickers.

Appears to be all original paint (I did autobody for years) I threw caution to the wind, had a PPI done at the dealer closest to seller, and even they were impressed at how clean the car was, shy of needing basic major maintenance.

It's the Swiss army knife of AOSs being much more durable, mitigating intermix, hydralock and smoking issues, not to mention helping to reduce oil starvation and oil pressure issues with its ability to handle running 1 quart more oil quantity over full.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Both my toys
thought I would introduce myself and my new to me 2001 C4 Coupe 6spd 68k miles. Lapis Blue over Savannah Beige.
I am first and foremost an aircooled VW guy. Was saving my pennies for a 912 and stumbled across this car one night on Marketplace, and just fell in love.
it kinda checked all the boxes for me, color model, mileage, etc. I graduated High School in 1998, so Boxsters and 996 were the hot thing as I was coming of age, the fact that this car is now retro is not lost on me. Decent price helped too.
Car is incredibly clean, but no service history at all, not even much on Carfax. Appears to be all original paint (I did autobody for years) I threw caution to the wind, had a PPI done at the dealer closest to seller, and even they were impressed at how clean the car was, shy of needing basic major maintenance. Only notes were ripped front CV boots and no reverse lights!!
Ended up purchasing for $25K, which I though was about right (maybe 2/3K high max, but color combo, etc just does it for me) and knowing I was going to be in for a big maintenance bill with no IMS history.
Drove 3 hours home, and then a couple shorts trips and put a quick 800 miles on her to get a feel.
Clutch was a bit chattery up top going into first, and way up high even for a 996.
Didnt want to warm up fully, needle just slightly under straight up, and in traffic or at idle would creep to just slightly over. Nothing alarming, but noticeable.
with no records, I had to get IMS done in short order to comfortably drive the car, and I knew it sat for a bit.
Took it to Autobahn Automotive in Sea Girt, NJ. They are a german only Indy close to me and always have a few Porsches out front. I like to do a lot of work myself, but pulling an AWD trans and IMS bearing extraction was further then I wanted to go.
I committed to IMS, clutch, flywheel, AOS, water pump, thermostat, belt, coolant flush, motor mounts with them.
Upon pulling the flywheel, they found the IMS was done, with an LN stamped cover plate. It looked incredibly clean and honestly not that old, so on a 68k mile car we made the decision to leave-it alone. Clutch was shot (as suspected from driving) covered in hot spots and RMS was showing signs of starting to leak, so all was not a waste in pulling the trans out.
This was on Friday, right before Christmas (she is spending the holiday on a lift) so knowing the IMS was done and saving $2500 was my Christmas present, at least now I know the previous owner cared enough to have the bearing done way before the clutch was necessary, so as suspected by how it presents the car was well cared for.
hoping to pick her up Wednesday or Thursday.
lots of plans
plugs and coil packs, that is something I can handle myself.
leather restoration and dye (already ordered correct Savanna beige repair kit from Luxury Leather Repair)
Alibaba Android radio
3 spoke steering wheel (the 4 spoke reminds me to much of my old 97 GTI, lol)
clear side markers
long term plans include
paintless dent repair (car is 100% original paint)
paint correction
struts/shocks
i am beyond excited. I havent been this much in love, scared, and over my head all at once since I met my wife.
Great story for your new ride, but be sure to check VIN with LN Engineering to see which replacement was made and how long ago. I'm guessing it is an IMS Retrofit since you said nothing about the oil feed and the retrofit bearings are a service item. But yeah, it's a great car.
Welcome!!! The excitement never leaves. Or at least every time I slide into my ride I smile from ear to ear. Sounds like you will too.
Cool VW Thing too
(I think that's what they are called)
Congrats

Welcome to the 996 club. Car looks to be in great shape. I would second
@996-CAB
thoughts on the IMS Retro. I run the same, but they do need to be replaced. My car has 62k miles and I am on my second one after replacing it 2 years ago.
Also consider using the UAOS track version instead of the oem AOS even if you don't plan to track it. It's the Swiss army knife of AOSs being much more durable, mitigating intermix, hydralock and smoking issues, not to mention helping to reduce oil starvation and oil pressure issues with its ability to handle running 1 quart more oil quantity over full.
Looking forward to hearing more about the car.
Welcome to the C4 club 😁 . Once you have established your baseline maintenance then go run her hard . Hopefully you have some twisty mountain roads to enjoy . They really come into their element on twisty roads . Good luck with her and enjoy .
i checked the VIN with LN before purchasing the car, nothing. The Indy doing the work said he has seen many instances of dealer installed LN not registered or with stickers. The cover really did not look that old, it was an educated decision to leave it alone rather then replace with such low mileage on the car. Being my 3rd car it will not see much mileage under my care.
Unfortunately I just found out about the UAOS after already commissioning work, so it is to late to order with car already on the lift and trans out. I will not be tracking this car whatsoever, I will most only put maybe 2k a year on it. The Thing is my Daily all summer.
