I have a 2001 996.1 C2 Cab and I decided to replace pretty much everything, so I went with a Kenwood double DIN headunit, Alpine 5 channel amp, Focal component speakers in the dash and doors, along with an 8" shallow sub installed in a factory Bose subwoofer box.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello, I'm replacing the head unit in my 2004 Carrera Cab. It has the original Bose speakers and amp, with the subwoofer under the center console. I would like a double DIN control/display with wireless Apple Car Play. What are your experiences and recommendation for my new head unit? /X3

Hi there. I think you are definitely on the right track to upgrade the head unit with a more modern one. The easiest and perhaps cleanest way to go to get an Apple CarPlay unit is the Porsche PCCM Plus unit for a 996, especially if your stereo wiring is unmolested. You won't get wireless CarPlay and it's not compatible with a backup camera, but it is pretty much plug and play, even with a Bose system and MOST. My advice is to check with Rod at Car Audio Innovations and see what he recommends for your car. It sounds great and I have wireless CarPlay and a backup camera as well. Not for the faint of heart, but you could get it all professionally installed if you prefer. Replacing just the head unit may be possible, if you get the correct MOST adapter, but I think you may be disappointed with sound from the 18 year old Bose amp and speakers.

POST 3Original post

^^I totally agree. Spend the money and save your sanity by installing a Porsche PCCM+ radio. This will maintain the MOST connectivity and give the car a stock look. People that install aftermarket radios in the MOST systems find out the hard way it not as easy as it seems. I've done it many times and won't ever do it again.

POST 4Original post

If you go the aftermarket route, I second calling Rod. It is more involved as you have to add an amp but Rod has very detailed instructions, trim plates, etc. to make it doable. Just takes a bit of time.
