It was the best solution for my situation and understanding of the job of replacing the transmission mount.
Leading evidence: 'best solution' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'best solution' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace ****' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Firstly I replaced the sagging motor mounts as the movement when lifting off the throttle was putting play into the transmission.

I've actually already got a short throw shifter on my car, a couple of the bolts were looser than they should be when I changed the ****.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

When I purchased my used 996 (75k miles on odo) I was kind of surprised at how sloppy and clunky the transmission and shifting felt. After doing some research I recognized that there were a few easy and cheap points that could be addressed that might help the situation so I wanted to share my findings with anyone who may be experiencing the same thing.
Firstly I replaced the sagging motor mounts as the movement when lifting off the throttle was putting play into the transmission. Ordered OEM replacement mounts from Pelican Parts.
- Very easy installation
- It did improve the movement of the engine when lifting off throttle, but it only marginally improved the shifting.
- Overall definitely worth it considering cost and ease and seems foundations before the other additions.
Secondly after a lot of research I decided to give the Function First transmission mount insert a try as the transmission mount was surely weak given the age and condition of the motor mounts. A lot of the reviews I read were hit and miss on this part claiming it added too much harshness, noise and vibration to the car. I decided to go with the orange (softest) insert as I was not intent on tracking the car and was after a more comfortable driving experience. Changing the whole mount is a much larger job so I wanted to give this a shot first.

- I opted to have the dealership install the mount insert while I had an oil change. Dealership charged $300 to install.
- Immediately noticed the shifting was more precise. There was a lot less movement when lifting off the throttle and shifting under acceleration.
- As a lot of the reviews claimed it did add a noticeable amount of noise to the car. But nothing unbecoming of a 21 year old sports car. Having come from a supercharged Lotus this wasn't likely to be an issue for me anyways.
- Over time the mount insert has settled and softened a bit and the noise and vibration has subsided to the point that nothing seems out of the ordinary.
- Overall
greatly
improved the feeling of the car.
Lastly the feeling of shifting through the gears, and finding the gears in general felt a bit less than ideal, clunky even. The height and weight of the shift **** seemed to have a bit to do with this so I ordered a heavy weight shift **** from Black Forest Industries.

- This addition improved the tactility and connection with the transmission from my perspective.
- I find it easier to get into gear and throwing it from gear to gear feels smoother.
- It is also a much more aesthetic shift ****, and looks pretty OEM thanks to the design on the "coin" on top of the ****. It matches my aluminum accents in the car well.
- For the love of god do not drop the coin between your seat and the console because this turned a 10 minute job into a 30 minute job.
In total all of these additions and installation cost under $900 I believe and really made a huge difference in the driving experience.
I didn't get a price but as far as I understand there is a special tool needed to push out the old mount. It's a lift job for sure. As far as I'm concerned any of the noise/vibration drawbacks of the insert are outweighed by the improvement in feel, the price, and the ease of installation. I can hear a bit more of the transmission and exhaust now which I like. Some of the reviews I've read on here about the insert are overly harsh and dissuasive, when replacing the whole mount is a much larger pain in the ***.
I'm don't mean to sound harsh, but you spent $140.00 on a Function First band aid instead of just buying a $30.00 transmission mount? You don't say your location but $300.00 to install the Function First inserts at the dealer is outrageous, you should look for an indie if you don't want to do it yourself.
I did mine on ramps. It took about an hour. Total cost with the special tool rental from a Board member was $90.00.
The transmission mount/bushing isn't $30. Even if I could get one for that price, I wouldn't use it as the tool to replace it is around $400 and even renting one costs you around $125. The possibility of an inferior mount failing prematurely makes saving $60 - $80 a fools errand. Buy the Lemfoerder mount (oem) for $90 and be done for at least 100k mi.
My tranny mount was also in rough shape and I opted to try the FF orange insert as a stop gap measure as changing the actual tranny mount is quite labour intensive if you do not have the tool. There was a noticeable improvement and I haven't had any issues getting into gear since. The added NVH is minimal. I also have new engine mounts and a 997 shifter. OP - you would probably benefit from swapping to a gt3 or 997 shifter assembly than a shift **** as some have suggested. Very cheap to do and reduces throw... some will offer up a 997 shifter for $50.
I've not seen a $30 transmission mount, and currently don't have a garage that I can do my own work in. It was the best solution for my situation and understanding of the job of replacing the transmission mount. The car was already at the dealership for an oil change and inspection so paying the $300 was more of a convenience, I would have saved maybe $100 at an indy.
Good to hear you also didn't find the FF insert to be too harsh. I've actually already got a short throw shifter on my car, a couple of the bolts were looser than they should be when I changed the ****. With the heavy **** I was just trying to improve the feel of the action anywhere that might help.
